gg...thanks for your help...gave up....the computer was done...the boys received a new computer for christmas anyway.

Another question. When going into my programs and disk space...I went into remove programs and noticed by file size, the biggest programs after office were all java updates...they are huge....once either java update or windows update does their thing...do you still need those programs on your computer?

Perhaps a stupid question..but what the hell...Im a stupid guy. Thanks bud.

What's the best antivirus software out there? My service ran out and I need to get new protection. Any suggestions? The cheaper the better.

best? I think it's AVG for free. Not sure what a good one is for paid service though.

Sorta OT here, but I'm now working on my computer. I just put in a new HDD with XP on it, but foolishly devoted the entire 120GB HDD to it. I'm gonna repartition it using partition logic tomorrow after I pick up some blank CD's, and then install OS X on the new 40G partition.

    Should be fun

    Update:

HDD was repartitioned, a bit of work, and OS X is now installing as I speak on my laptop. I couldn't do Leopard, since my computer is four years old, but hey whatever, I have a dual-boot PC/MAC without paying too much money

Green Dude, I just added another 1G RAM to replace the 256mb stick I was using beside the 512mb stick. The FreeRam counter says I have 1044mb free space right now, time to really give online gaming a try without constant freezing

hmm nice! I would get model of the 1gig you just bought... go to www.newegg.com and get the same one. 1gig runs about 25$ or so right now.

The reason I would say to do that is you can take advantage of dual channel where you def would see an even bigger difference then having the 1.5 in. Hiker its just never good enough!!

Back to the first post, I read that Avira is the top free anti-virus program according to the latest tests. It had a 94.5% detection rate and it doesn't use a lot of resources.

For my next endeavor, I'm making plans to install a slave hard drive (I've only got around 4.5 gigs free space, my Ipod has 20 more gigs available, something's gotta give) Nothing special, just a cheap 160 gig drive maybe. But my computer doesn't seem set up to be very addition friendly, Its got no extra drive housing, so I don't know how I'm going to mount the new drive yet. But I think I can figure out the wiring stuff (The ribbon cable only has one connector for the master drive, none for a slave, so I think I have to get another ribbon cable and connect it to a spare outlet that I do seem to have. So much for tutorials on YouTube.)

I think your best bet is to get an external HD

I just moved over 2 gigs of old photos and videos onto the Ipod as an external drive, and got rid of a lot of mp3s I wasn't listening to (free DLs I can DL again if I miss them), so I've saved around 3 gigs extra space.

What got me thinking about it, I discovered the wonderful world of renting movie downloads. I just saw the movie "300" tonight for $3.99 from Amazon, and it used up half my existing space, which kind of freaked me out a little.

So I rented another movie tonight, but I guess I won't get to see it. Every time I clicked on play, the media player instantly jumped up to 99% of my CPU usage. Or in other words, frozen solid. Funny how "300" streamed a few nights ago without a glitch. So now, I'm looking at replacing the processor with one at least 2.3Ghz. I don't even know what I have now, but its the factory CPU in a cheap ass, no frills Dell. It doesn't look like it'll be any kind of a real bitch to replace, I've seen the AMD tutorials on YouTube, and I took the panel off to see for myself before I buy one.

BTW, that sight GG linked to, Newegg, its going to save me $12 under Amazon. So thanks for the link.

I purchased a 160gb Seagate ext drive tonight for $79 (70% off on Amazon, it was the top selling item in electronics today) I found myself sending my mp3 files to my Ipod for temporary storage, then I thought OMG, WTF did I just do: I drop the Ipod, it breaks and I'm fucked. So I tried putting them back, and I didn't have enough room on C:, Jesus! So I moved all my pics from the last 2 years onto the Ipod just to clear enough space to consolidate Itunes so I won't lose everything (I had to re-create all my playlists when I moved the mp3 folders to the Ipod and accidentally made duplicates of most of my stored folders and had to flush all the duplicated files on Itunes - oops!) What a nightmare its been the last couple of weeks, being up against the limit of my hard drive. Defragging, dumping files, just to stay alive :eek:hmy:

I guess I should lay off the concert downloads until the drive gets here.

Heck, with all that to choose from, its hard to say no

I got my new CPU today, and gues what? Its not the right one for my computer, it won't fit. So I put the old one back...and the computer won't work! I'm on an old 3rd hand HP with WindowsME and 256mb right now, about to take my "good" box to CompUSA and get them to fix my fuckup.

Overall, not a great week for me. Its a good thing I'm on vacation next week.

(Oh, and BTW, should it be totally screwed, at least I still have my mp3s and pics on the Ipod.)

So I decided to look up the phone # for CompUSA to find out if they repair computers and how long/how much. The website said all locations are being liquidated and the one I was going to apparently has been closed. That's where I have the free replacemant warranty for my Ipod

I took it to some local guys, small business computer service. They are going to replace the motherboard so my new CPU will work. The new motherboard has a fantastic sound card with surround stereo and USB 2.0 ports, which I also didn't have. And even though my memory sticks won't work with the new board, they are going to swap them out for no additional charge (other than the difference for upgrading from 1.5 to 2 gigs.) Labor: $65. Total cost: around $150. I was so happy, I almost had a JohnnyD moment and shit my pants

I get it back Friday. Until then, its this old antique from 1999. uggh...

edit: When I logged on to the board, the name saved on here for me was Superchad. I thought GD would get a kick out of that.
