Good point by poster..I agree, some flaws in analyzing it though (though admittedly it would be pretty complicated to figure out just how good a defense is). If you watch the games, this defense is clearly OK and improving. We've held some pretty potent offenses to very few points for long periods of a game, and that seems to be overlooked. While stats may be comparable, the pats defense is not NEARLY as bad as say the 09 lions that teams can just walk in drop 40 points on and blow out. 5 possessions in a row to close the game we got the Ravens to punt. I could argue that defense won us that game. Clearly, brady lit the steelers D the F up when we played. We can't overlook the great defensive first half though which really put us in that commanding position. Colts game as well. Our defense really frustrated peyton for 3 quarters and put our team in a dominant position. Not to mention some huge pick 6's against the Bengals and Miami that really blew those games out of the water. In almost every case, we did have a defensive collapse (and/or played too much prevent) and our stats look terrible. Bill is right though--Stats are for losers. Last year (whether stats were better or not) our defense was not good enough to win big games..to make the key plays in key situations. This year it clearly is. (Btw no surprise some Jet fans dwell on the browns blowout as a sign of how bad our D is. I could point out how incompetent the Jets O has looked when facing elite defenses (GB, Ravens) and say clearly that means the Jets can't go anywhere int he playoffs, too.
Why would you do that? We have a power rushing attack like the Browns and your defense is no where near as good as the Packers or Ravens, no matter how you want to slice the stats.
