Also its time to be aware that its smokescreen time. The start of the combine is the time you can stop believing anything that anyone says between now and the end of April. No one wants to show their cards. Doesn't mean everything is a lie, just that its hard to believe a lot of what they say...
Dont rule out Jeff Cumberland having a good year... I honestly dont think we'll draft a TE because of him
He is a UDFA coming off a major injury. there is no guarantee he even makes the roster. heck, Josh Baker might have passed him already considering they were throwing Baker the ball at the end of his rookie season. We never put Cumberland on the field his rookie year.
The kid flat out flew down the track for that forty time. Could he break into the high 4.2's next run??? Amazing speed for such a big guy 6' 4" 215 LBS
Stephen Hill just became a first rounder. 6'4'' 215, 4.3 40, avg 29.5 ypc last year. He will dominate the vertical jump as well.
i think its more about confidence, he doesnt think he can run well. Problem is he just got passed by Floyd and Hill and Wright will fly later on as well. Jeffery may have just made himself a 2nd rounder with this decision. Hill's second time was 4.31 hello consistency.
Looking at these times, the Jets should have no problem finding a deep threat in the draft from rounds 2-7
I doubt it. Floyd is good, but Blackmon is on another level. He is pretty much untouchable in my opinon. On the other hand, floyd did just run himself into the top 10 discussion however. He might be a Bill if Stevie Johnson is allowed to walk...
Taking a guy like Hill in the first is a huge projection. While a good blocker, he ran nothing but deep routes in a triple option offense. The kid is big and fast, with spoty hands. If he goes in the first he could be this drafts Johnny "Lam" Jones. I just hope he's not ours.
Well it should be pointed out that Hill never had a chance to produce in the triple option offense. GT has produced 2 recent first round WR's. Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas. Thomas started living up to the hype at the end of the year. Hill is 6'4'' and just ran a 4.3 that is literally the ideal definition of size and speed at the WR position. Based on potential alone he will likely go in the late 1st. He displayed great hands in the drills today, and solid route running. He will take time to develop because he isnt going to be nearly as polished as the other top WR's this year, but give him 2-3 years and he could be a damn good one. He averaged 29.5 yards per reception. I'll say that again, 29.5 yards per reception. Rumor has it that he can knock out a 42'' vertical. If he does that I don't think there is a chance he doesn't go round 1. The question just becomes how high he can go.
Thomas had 46 receptions for 1,154 yards and 8 touchdowns his last year at GT. Johnson had on 76 catches 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns his last year at GT. Hill had 28 passes for 820 Yards adn 5 TD's. Putting him with Thomas is a bit of a reach, putting him with Johnson is a down right crime. Watch the men play football, not jsut run in a line. This is not olympic qualifiers. Hill is a ton more raw than Johnson coming out and not as big or physical as either guy. Both have about 2 inches and 20 to 25 punds of muscle on him. Hill had a decent year. Sure it was a ton per catch with bad QB play, but he basicly caught two routes. He used his speed to beat guys deep and thats it. He has a lot to prove running the NFL route tree, beating press coverage, and doing anything physically after the catch, and catching NFL caliber throws with any consistency. His tape is very limited. Drafting him that high is a major projection. A Coach/GM is betting that they can turn this guy into a NFL receiver, because despite his world class physical talents in speed and jumping, he did not produce a ton or do much to prove he can do anything but run real fast in a stright line at GT. He was slated as a late 2nd, early third guy before the combine. It would not be a shock to see some team take a flyer on him in the late first, but its a gamble pure and simple. There is alot more to beign a receiver than speed. If it was only pure speed guys like Michael Irving and Larry Fitzgerald would never have made it big.
My point was not comparing them as players. Just saying that GT has produced 1st round receivers out of the triple option system. It's obvious Hill is not Calvin Johnson. But he might be the better athlete as we are learning today. As we all know there are 2 things you can't teach, speed and size. Hill has both. Remember DHB? he went 7 overall despite horrid hands and iffy production, because speed kills. Hill isn't going that high, but its not insane to see he is a first round pick. I never said I wanted the Jets to draft him, I just said he's a physical freak, and physical freaks get drafted very high in the draft. Look at Matt Jones, the guy was a QB his whole career, and then everybody says he has to be a WR in the pros, and he runs a blazing 40 and he went in the 20's to Jacksonville. Guys get overdrafted all the time because they are physical freaks.
DHB went to the Raiders at #7. The raiders in the Al Davis era were well known for drafting for speed over most anything else. It was a well known runnign joke. Remeber Riccardo Lockette? 6'2" with 4.3 speed last year. He went undrafted. Hill is not DHB, nor is he Lockette. He's also not Calvin Johnson or Thomas. He's got a very long thin frame and a ton to learn to become an NFL receiver. All I said was its a major projection. Your acting like I said you fucking crazy, which I did not. I not sure what your not understanding about him having almost no tape of a route tree, but the kid is not as polished as and of the top four or 5 guys. If you draft him in the first, your guessing becasue of physical talents he can be as good or better than them if you bump him up that high. A projection is an educated guess and thats all I'm saying. Taking him in the first is a guess, a gamble, true boom or bust, nothing more, nothing less.
