Love the player but he should have been unloaded last off season after 2 concussions in 06. He has publicly stated he only wants to play one or two more years. He did this to us to go to Washington and did the same thing to Gibbs. If they Jets are smart they will try to move Coles to the Bengals for Johnson might have to throw in Vilma or a pick. Worst case scenario let him work out a deal eslwhere and get what we can for him. The guy is old and damaged goods and isn't going to help us win a SB if he is going to cost big bucks as a 3 in 2 or 3 years.
Cut him. He already left us once signed a huge a deal. Then when he was traded back here he wanted more money, bye!
Coles is gone. Not a huge loss because he's not the same player anymore. He gets injured to varying degrees pretty much every time he puts on the uniform. How many times did he run off the field last year after a play holding something and wincing, not to return? 4? He'll probably play a year in Jacksonville or Atlanta...somewhere near his castle.
I agree that he has 1-2 years left at this level. The issue is how to handle the PR situation. Coles will be another Kendall.
Laveranues Coles has given his body, his health, and his youth to this organization. When healthy, Coles makes everyone on the offense better, and is as reliable a target as you'll find in the NFL- especially as far as guys who are under 6' go.... If he was promised money, ala Kendall, and now the FO is backing down on that issue, they should be ashamed of themselves. This is not a team with an abundance of tough, gritty veteran leadership, nor is it a team with an abundance of talent. Last year we ran our veteran leader on the OL out of town. With Pennington and Vilma's status in NY uncertain, if we run Coles out of town, we will be in even worse shape than we were last season, as far as having guys on board to provide a positive example, and give some guidance to our young talent. Our FO seems to have a problem with players who step up and become lockerroom/ on the field leaders. Maybe it's because Mangini's so young, and he feels that his control of the team is threatened by older players who may not always tote the company line, but demand the respect of their peers? I'm not sure, but that seems likely. When they got rid of Mawae, is seemed like it was a "I'll show them who's boss" kind of move, and that kind of worried me. When they ran Kendall out of town, it felt the same way, and I began to question if this FO is mature enough to run a successful football team. When they deactivated Chris Baker after he failed to praise the CS after a terrible loss, their immaturity began to become even more evident, even with the mainstream media. When they benched Brandon Moore for the entire rest of the game, after he took a personal foul sticking up for one of his players (Leon I think) who was getting cheapshotted, all of these fears began to come to fruition. If this debacle results in us losing our grittiest veteran player in Coles, that will be the final straw for me. I know I can't do anything about it, but this ongoing trend of belittling players because they are a threat to your authority is disgusting, and not the proper way to run a football team. By the way, the FO is telling him he won't get a new deal because "his production is down"?! Are they f'n kidding me!? He played on a team with the worst OL in the league, and a terrible inconsistent situation at QB, while playing through a concussion and an ankle injury, and still had 6 TDs and over 600 yards. When he was in the game, Cotchery's numbers increased exponentially, because Coles opened things up for him. He did his job, and helped the team. Do you think when the Pats are trying to re-sign Randy Moss this offseason, they're going to punish him because his post season numbers were low?! Of course not!!! By being on the field, he helped the team. God that article made me sick
If they make this a circus like Kendall and wait until the deadline to move or resign him with no contingency plan in the waits we will go 4-12 again. They better not screw this up. On one hand, hes getting old, hes hurt more often than not, and he complains. On the other hand, he's the warrior on the field who blocks, catches in traffic, gets hit and gets back up, makes the team better on the field, a team captain, will sacrifice himself for the New York Jets. I believe he deserves to stay here until he retires.
This is not going to be another Kendall, this will be worse. The guy has 2 years left on his contract, and weren't there rumors that he may consider retiring soon? What does he need 2 more years for? Kendall was different, wasn't he in the last year of his contract?
This is the bottom line. I love the guy too, but come on. I knew a while back when he first started this shit again that we'd be heading for trouble again. This is the part that amazes me: "The organization has made the unusual move of offering to guarantee the final two seasons at $11 million ($5 million in 2008 and $6 million in 2009). NFL contracts rarely are guaranteed outside of the signing bonus, and the move by the Jets is believed to be unprecedented in club history. The move, however, is not enough to satisfy Coles. He is confident he would get that type of money on the open market if the Jets released him." How's he being screwed? Coles should just STF up already. Guaranteed $11 million in the twilight of the last two years of his career? How much better does it get? It's a new era and he was Chad's Go To. We need to go with youth now, people who Clemens clicks with, like Stuckey, for example. It may be time to trade him if we can get some value, otherwise we're in for more locker room headaches this spring, something we could do without right now.
Coles signed the contract. If he thought he could get that type of money on the open market, then why did he sign it?
I agree, which is what the Jets are basically saying too, by offering him the guarantee. This guy is a great Jets receiver, but I really disike that whiny side of him. Maybe Tanny can work out a 3 year deal and shut him the F up aleady.
I feel Coles he doesn't want to do this but we are not putting our half of the bargain. This is bullshit we have to take care of our player this puts a bad name on our FO and sends a bad message that we don't take care of our own. As russian card players say "pay this man heez money"
He was a great Jets reciever when he was with us the first time. SInce he has been back he has not shown he is worth more then he already agreed to.
Hes been bitching about training camp since mangini took over, even in the middle of the season, let him go, thanks for the memories. Deserved money???? you are smoking shit, he is guaranteed money, hes been paid. He left before, he will do it again.
I think if he handles it right and the contract is worked out it will show that the FO will treat people right if they act right.
folks this stuff should not surprise anyone...... we said before last year that coles runs the risk of getting cut, not getting re-signed or even traded during this offseason. with the emergence of cotchery, IMO, we should NOT extend coles and let him play out his contract.... i have long said that WR is a priority for this team. look what this team has gotten by the last few years at WR - moss, coles, chrebet for starters mostly with edwards and now cotchery and coles with mangini. only one first day pick in there during the last 7 years - is that right?? gotta check it but the point is just that. the jets need to upgrade the position with day one talent - along with that offensive line. a QB's future is at stake jil
Re; Cotch. Hes not a #1 WR , a very good #2. No one has yet mentioned Stuckey. Stuckey is an interesting prospect who I believe could definatley be a #1 IF he can avoid injuries. Maybe the FO are waiting on him before negotiations. I'm a little bit surprised at how LC is percieved as a cry baby and whinger. Most of his 'rants' are tongue in cheek. But as Mangini has said , when someone who gives his all and works so hard , he is entitled to his say. As most people know I was one of Kendalls biggest supporters and believe that he should have been paid , welchers!. The situation with LC is similar as LC is also coming to the end of his career and due....... will he get it? No, not if history is anything to go by. He should have already been gone , but the lack of depth at WR is frightening and in the next 2-3 years we will have a very young core , good or bad.
I've seen a few people mention Stuckey. I personally don't have a lot of faith that Stuckey is the answer. The guy was a 7th round pick, and he had a season-ending injury. I hope he can eventually be a #3 or maybe a #2 receiver, but most receivers take time. Chansi Stuckey should not be the reason why we don't pick a receiver or sign a receiver. I know he looked good in camp last year, but Justin McCareins usually looks good in camp. You can't put a whole lot of stock into that. I like the kid, but I'm not putting a whole lot of faith in him being a long-term answer at starting WR.
This will show how committed to their ideals Tannenbaum and Mangini are. This is functionally no different than the Kendall situation at its core. Because of last year's idiotic handling of the Kendall situation, the Jets are now in a lose-lose scenario. A) They pay Coles and nobody takes them seriously about their threats to not renegotiate contracts, such as Kendall's. B) They cut Coles and likely incur the wrath of a lot of players on the team that love LC. More importantly, Coles is one of the few good players on this dreadful team. There's no winning for them and that scenario had a lot to do with the Kendall activity last year.
