All I'm saying is that you don't see players in the prime of their career drop 20 pounds. Players do it later on in their careers in order to gain the quickness they lost. We have to hope Coples won't generally be used in coverage and Bowles is smart enough to identify it as a weakness. Rex wasn't. We'll see. I don't see his shortcomings as having anything to do with his explosiveness or quickness. I think the problem with Coples is his technique. He tends to false step or rock backwards before moving forward when the ball is snapped. I don't have statistics but I would guess most of his sacks come out of a 3 point stance because he doesn't have that false step or hesitation. He's also a tall ass dude with long arms. If he plays lower with leverage he'll be a 10 sack guy regardless of his weight.
My thing with Coples is just that he's played his most of his career out position. He's a good not great outside linebacker in a 3-4. My belief is if Coples played as a full time 3-4 end or as a defensive tackle in a 4-3 he would be far more effective and would see his sack total double. No his motor may not be that of a Sheldon Richardson but I don't see the laziness that was so overly talked about. He just hasn't been put in the best possible positions regarding his skill set. Stick him on the line in a 4-3 set with richardson-mo-Harrison/williams/douzable and those guys will be having a race to see who can get to the QB first. Can't wait to see that line on third and longs. The way our D is set up teams can't run the ball, I think we already know that. Add Revis and Cromartie to the secondary and this line will actually have time to get to the qb this season which is scary coming off a pretty good sack number year. Pumped to watch this team and especially this defense get after it, if they can play to their potential this will be one scary defense for opposing offenses! I'm ready to stop talking about it and I'm ready Jet up boysssss!
