I hated that punt! Even a crap offense has a better shot at getting 2 yards than they do at getting the ball back with only 2 TOS and a workable amount of time left on the clock. And then to let them run for a first down. I was just shaking my head at that decision.
all that means nothing when we can't stop them from getting 1st downs. we shouldn't have punted late, our D got one big stop. it was asking a lot for them to get a 2nd one, that is what big time Ds do and we haven't had one in a long time.
When I saw the punt formation on 4th and 2, I thought for sure they would try a fake punt run/pass but of course not. We would never take that chance. Payton took a chance in last night's game even if it was tipped very badly.
This is the time management situation everyone should be complaining about!!! We're inside our own 10 yard line and the half is winding down. Passing plays kill the clock and a poor punt puts Detroit in good field position with plenty of time left to score. I know MM is hoping that we can drive the ball 90 yard down field and score but with under three minutes left on the clock with first down and 5 yards to go inside our own ten yard line we gotta run the ball. At the very least that causes Detroit to use their time outs. MM and Rex were WAY too optimistic here. We didn't need to drive the ball down field. We need a first down and then to see what situation we're in once we accomplish that task.
Rex is a terrible in-game coach. That was poor clock management once they punted and when the defense was out and terrible decision making regarding the last offensive series all around. The play calling was bad there and so was the decision to not go for it.
4th and 2 with a few minutes on the board and we need a touch down FOURTH AND TWO and we punt it away and by doing so gave the game away there. This really might be the end of Rex this season. Besides the clock management.
I said go for it but Rex's attitude is that his defense can make the stop. His defensive attitude jumped in front of him, going for it on 4th down would essentially mean he doesnt believe in his defense, which he shouldnt considering the crap secondary has was given.
the challenge was a good play. he was already using the timeout, might as well challenge it and maybe you get lucky. worst case you still have a challenge left
That's true, but the mistake is still an inexcusable one for a 6th year NFL head coach to make. It's just inexcusable.
stuff like this happens all the time, we don't notice it w/ others as much b/c we aren't invested emotionally like we are w/ the Jets. It still sucks and shouldn't happen but it's not like it is a shocking thing.
I agree, that it happens. But it shouldn't. And the thing with Rex is, it happens to him all of the time. He just doesn't pay attention to that kind of stuff like he should. And it's frustrating.
Yeah, you're down 7 not 3. You cannot give the ball to the other team down 7 when you will only get one drive after their possession. This is probably true at the 5 minute mark but it is certainly true at 3 and a half.
if we had a big time D I punt in that situation but we don't and the D actually got a stop a possession earlier so it was pressing our luck to ask them to do it again.
huh? they weren't taking timeouts there. If they were they were stupid. This challenge was before the Jets punted it back to the Lions. Right after they scored the Decker TD. They were in full blown get the ball back, save timeout mode. It was just Rex seeing a ball pop out and he couldn't help himself to throw the challenge flag. It was a stupid, stupid challenge because they weren't going to get the ball there - they knew they were going to need timeouts later AND they had extra time to look it how it was obviously NOT a fumble because Harrison was shaken up on the field.
No it doesn't mean you don't believe in your defense it means you understand that when you are losing and need to score you need the ball to do so. If you have the ball you don't just give it back to your opponent. He really is an inept in game coach.
Exactly. Great post. It's all about possession. The Jets did the Lions a favor by punting the ball there. Not to mention if they ever did stop Detroit they would've been in 4 down territory no matter what, with less time on the clock. Facing a 4th and 2 with 3:49 remaining and 2 timeouts was likely better than any other situation they would've found themselves in after the punt - the rest of the game. It was taking a risk for sure but that's why "risk management" is a core aspect of the head coaching job. Just from purely a risk management standpoint - getting 2 yards on 4th down is less risky than punting and taking the risk of stopping your opponent in 3 downs and driving the length of the field without timeouts.
