For Evans, I think he's a pretty gifted receiver but I like Lee and Cooks (and Watkins) better. Lee and Cooks, you can tell them to run a route and they are going to do it and they are going to be open. That's the main thing for me. Cooks moves at a different speed than everyone else and Lee is amped up all the time. Mike Evans... people get in his head sometimes. He can catch contested balls but he sees a lot more of them than the other guys. JMO anyways.
Can you imagine the pandemonium if Manziel goes #1. It's highly unlikely though. I think the smart teams are rolling with the hype to try to get another team to bite on him. I could honestly seeing him falling pretty far.
Mike Evans does have immaturity issues, and he does play overly physical. I can see the drop, maybe not that far but it's possible, I think if the Lions fail to grab Watkins, they will grab either Evans or Ebron. If he's going to go the same road as Vincent Jackson (DUIs, the arrests) it could cause a problem.
interesting thoughts on Evans. It is quite possible he is being mocked to high by the 'experts'. If he fell to #18 though, that would be too hard for me to pass up, and I'd hope the Jets would select him. only WR who is a bargain at #18 imo (outside of Watkins of course)..
7. Mike Evans, Texas A&M6'5", 225#Round: 2 Uses long arms and strong hands to beat press. Can push away defenders while running with the ball. Does not give his QB much space to work with on the sideline, resulting in a lot of incompletions. Uses his long legs to gallop away from defenders. Will remain active and come back to the ball when the play breaks down. His size and speed creates an intimidating presence, making him a freightening player for DBs to have to tackle. Is hit-and-miss on contested balls, of which he seems to see a lot. It makes me wonder if he'll have issues creating separation in the NFL. Uses proper technique catching passes reaching out with thumbs together to secure the ball. Has gotten himself psyched out of the game on more than one occasion. When he keeps his head, he is a good teammate on the field, seeking out blocking opportunities to maximize each play. What about a corner. I really like Cooks and ASJ, but neglecting the CB is an issue. By the time Round 3 rolls around the Jets will have slim pickings at CB, especially if McGill (who's too old, 25), Desir & Phillip Gaines are gone.
Yeah, they won't draft a TE without having another CB first..maybe a trade and if not they will take one here. Of course if they do trade up they won't be picking in the second anyway.
Yeah, this happened. I only got through round 4... here are round 3 and 4 links as well as the Jets summary... http://www.cornerblitz.com/2014/Mocks/Final/R3.aspx http://www.cornerblitz.com/2014/Mocks/Final/R4.aspx http://www.cornerblitz.com/2014/Mocks/Final/NYJ.aspx
I think there will be good options in the 3rd like Jaylen Watkins and Desir. In the 4th I like EJ Gaines.
I'd be more than fine with passing on a CB in the first two rounds. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that I don't want a CB in the 1st two rounds. My reasons are listed below in order of importance. 1. I think Idzik screwed up in FA by not signing one of the upper echelon FAs. I think he tried to be too tough, to get too good of a deal when he had plenty of cap space and could have overpaid a little to get one of them. By not doing that, he put himself and the team in the position of almost being forced to draft a CB high (1st round most likely) out of need. This goes against his own philosophy and the best draft philosophy, that of taking the BPA. Thus, I think it would be compounding his mistake in FA and trying to fix one mistake by making a second, and that almost never works. How he handles this will tell me a lot about Idzik. If he cannot admit that he made a mistake in FA and be smart enough to not compound the mistake by reaching for a CB in round 1, then imo he's not the man for the Jets' GM position and should be fired sooner rather than later. 2. If the Jets BPAs on the Jets' board in rounds 1 and 2 are positions other than CB, imo he must draft those positions and forget about the CB position until later. He shouldn't reach for a CB out of need because HE failed to sign a starting quality CB during FA. There were plenty in FA this year. There's no excuse for not signing one of them. IMO the WR, FS and TE positions are every bit as much a need as the CB position. Just because there's not the depth at that position that there is at the WR position doesn't mean the first round pick should be a CB. If you're going to use that logic, there's even less depth at S, so then the pick at #18 should be a FS. The same could be said at TE. The needs at OT, OG and ILB (especially OG) are almost as great as those at WR, TE and FS. The OG play was awful last year. Winters should improve, but there's no guarantee. Colon wasn't great, and was a penalty magnet, and he isn't even healthy. While I'm against ever taking an OG in the first round, and would prefer they don't even take one as high as the 2nd round, I wouldn't have a problem with the Jets taking one in the 2nd round if he was far and away the BPA. 3. The Jets have ignored the offense for waaaay too long, particularly at the skill or play-making positions. I think improving the offense would do more to improve not only the team, but the defense as well. By making the offense not only better able to sustain drives, thus keeping our own D fresh and keeping the opposing offense off the field and preventing them from scoring points, it should enable the Jets to score more point and also score from any where on the field. They have not had that ability consistently in a long time. With Cooks and ASJ alone, they could have a potent passing attack for the next 5-10 years, but when you factor in Kerley, Decker, and perhaps some of their other receivers, Chris Johnson, Ivory and any additional WR or TE they might add via the draft, and they have a potent offense. 4. I think the Jets have invested enough high draft picks at the CB position over the last 5-10 years. While it's a very important position, especially in the way Rex sees his defense, the Jets ought to be able to build a quality secondary and a topnotch D without continually using 1st round picks at CB. It's time that Jets' GMs stop enabling Rex in his obsession with the CB position, and force him to value the OLB and S positions or fire him and hire a HC and DC who will. 5. Even with 12 draft picks and a lot of cap space, most of us knew that there was no way the Jets could adequately address and fill all their needs this offseason. That means a position or positions have to go unaddressed, or at least not addressed in a significant fashion. Why should the CB position be elevated over the WR or TE positions? Just as there may not be a quality CB to start opposite Milliner, there's not a quality WR to start across from Decker or a quality TE to start. I like Cumberland a lot, but he's not a starting-quality TE imo. Even worse, there isn't a true FS on the roster. I don't count Bush. I think he's pretty bad. FS is key as the last line of defense and is just as important facing all the topnotch passing attacks the Jets will face this season as another CB is. In fact, I think a better case can be made that getting a topnotch FS prospect (or as good a one as they can get) is MORE important than a CB. CBs can get beat, even the best of them. If you don't have a quality FS with speed who can range deep, you're screwed. Neither Landry nor Allen are that fast, neither have good enough coverage skills, and are not FSs even though that idiot Rex tries to sell Allen as a FS. It's nuts. Walls showed some quality play last season. Aaron Berry did too and AFAIK, he's still out there in FA. The Jets could re-sign him or another veteran CB who is cut following the draft and/or TC and be fine at the CB position, especially when you consider how much Milliner struggled last season and how awful Cro was and the Jets were ok. 6. Needs are a part of the equation, as is the team's play in 2014, but overall the long-term view should be the most important consideration. Idzik shouldn't hurt the team long term by panicking and forcing a pick at CB this draft just for the sake of this season. If the Jets improve their pass rush by adding a quality OLB prospect and a FS in the draft, then that should not only improve their play against the pass and the defense more in 2014 than by just adding a CB, but will improve it more long term imo. It should also result in the Jets' D creating more TOs. The same can be said for improving the offense. If the Jets are able to sustain drives longer, keep opposing offenses off the field so they can't score, and have more leads, especially big leads, it will force opponents to throw more, the Jets can forget about the run and can tee off on opposing QBs which will help the pass rush and pass D, and should result in more TOs.
Steve, Excellent job! I LOVE this draft and would take it any day. Although I'm not a fan of trading up, I would absolutely love the move up to get Attaochu. Sadly, I don't think Idzik would do that as Rex doesn't seem to value the OLB position. I also like the picks for many other teams. Great job!
