So has Fatukasi regressed or is this wide 9 defensive front not condusive to these dLinemen? I almost lean towards the latter. Plus the LB’s save for CJ aren’t good. CJ was never known for playing downfield and wrecking havoc in the backfield. That’s where a guy like Quincy back in the early season is what is needed on the weak side. Jets started playing more 3 safety looks to help with the run today.
You're only as strong as your weakest link and the Jets have a lot of those. Mosely is a stud defensive player it's not his fault the players around him stink.
The Jets front 7 is slow and bulky for the defense they are trying to run. This makes sense given that up until this year they had been a 3-man front for a decade. Baseline talent is there but not for the scheme the Jets are transitioning too. If they get a real Edge for the right side of the defense next year things will look a bit better. They'll still have the open question of who best fits on the left side of the front but odds are pretty good they'll have Q at 3T and Fatukasi at NT and then JFM will either be the most expensive depth guy in the NFL or they will manage to shoehorn him in at LDE. One of the biggest dysfunctions on the Jets over the years is the talent scheme on the DL. The Jets have typically overloaded on 3T and 5T talent and then tried to find a NT from that mix. That means the guy on the nose is usually just slightly misfit for the job. Then you add in the lack of a real Edge on the right side and things are dicey as the 5T on that side tries to overcompensate for the lack of a rush outside him. Then you have the switch to a 4-3 this year and things just completely break down as everybody is scrambling to cover the misfits in most of the other roles. This was a thing when Rex was here too and his solution was to blitz DB's like crazy to make up for the lack of a true Edge. It was a thing when Mangini was the boss and he used Pace and Thomas interchangeably to mimic a real rush on the right side although their primary role was to set the edge. It has been a thing since John Abraham left town after 2005. Fixing the thing should be a high priority.
I thought I saw him quickly. He's been cashing his game checks and showing up occasionally on a play. Nothing like the player he was pre contract.
There's a good chance the first pick in next year's draft will be an edge rusher. Time will tell if that player is the one who opposing OC's will have to game plan against.
It was not inevitable that this was going to happen but it was a huge risk and the Jets lost the roll on that risk. One of the most important things to understand about the NFL is that big contracts do not mean you have a good team. They just mean that players are getting paid a lot to show up. The Jets are spending about as much money this year as any other team in the NFL. For that they have a terrible depth chart and a few monstrously overpaid players on the field/IR/etc.
Not this offseason. But I bet someone would have bitten before the trade deadline this year because his 2021 cap hit is so low
Unfortunately, Mosely is the only real linebacker we have and at times looks like the only one on the field with a clue.
