Do you really think the knock on Herm was legit? Our young guys seemed to see the field a decent amount unless they were behind talented vets like the case with Jordan (though I agree he should've played more). On the DL we saw multiple late round picks getting playing time every game as part of the rotation.

To me it seemed that young guys on the D got a lot more playing time but a lot of that could have been that the D was typically on the field 10-15 minutes more then the offense.

Also on the offense I think part of it had to do with the OC and how the game plan (or lackthereof in Hackett's case) played out. By that I mean when we were clicking on offense we saw more touches for everyone, when we didn't we saw reliance on the vets, or at least it seemed that way because even if the young guys were on the field the plays didn't develop in a way that they were utilized (i.e. either they weren't the first option, the QB was sacked, good coverage on the D, etc).

sounds to me like an interesting prospect...works hard, is versatile...

Mangini said he wants smart, tough football players, and if this kid fits the mold...then by all means let's see what he'd got!

No what should happen, is that the Jets should draft someone like you want, and have them compete for the job. If Katnik is good enough he will be the starter. And the worst that can happen is we have a good back-up Center. The best player plays. Win-Win. He will get his shot in TC and preseason.

You can never have too much depth. I hope we draft a OT and center. We also need to keep goodwin.

Could it be the exact same reason HE is gone. HE is shit when it comes to evaluating talent. Let wait and see what mangini does with this guy.

Another Post on a Center who WILL not be on the team.

Dont get me wrong, if the guy wins the job, I will be shocked, but pleased especially if he is good and if we dont draft a center in this draft, but i am not happy to go in to september thinking that he will win the job or that we shouldnt draft Eslinger or Mangold.I would have loved it if he had played a bit at the end of the season. I know its not his fault that he didnt play. I know Herm talks about young players and how they are good tough, etc but then he doesnt play them, If barton and Hobson and Mcclover were not injured I doubt that we will ever have seen Brown. Also remember Weaver? Herm raved and Raved about him, he never even made the team.I will cheer for Katnik if he makes the team and plays well, im just not counting on it or believe that it will happen. And thats the difference between me and most on this board. You guys beleive it will happen, I doubt that it will happen, we nevr give opportunities to young players.Mawae is 35 and too old, but we sign Van Ohhoffin or whatever his name is who is the same aga end give him more money? What the heck?

The difference is, von Oelhoffen is considered an incredibly great teammate, a perfect team player. Mawae has a history of throwing coaches under the bus, and with Mangini being a rookie coach, that's not something he needs.

The only major knock on Katnik in colleg and coming out of college was size and strength. He played at 270lbs, which is also a major reason why he lacked ideal strength. I read an interview with him(no I can't remember where it is, do a search you can find it) and he said he just never ate enough to gain weight, but he has since recieved help with that and is well into the 290's. So we'll see, maybe we have something in him, maybe we don't.

    so why?

Hasnt he started or at least played some with all the struggles on the O line last year. If he is better than Goodwin etc why didnt they play him? Did he even dress? I hope he is as good as you guys say he is, but I would sure have loved to see him or King , Missant or any of the other guys get some playing time.I guess we will have a chance to see him during the preseason. If he makes it that far. We coulkd have tried him at O line, when Kendall was hiking the ball over Vinnies head etc

I think he either appeared in or dressed for one game... and they may not have brought him up because they didnt have the cap room

Says the man with the Joel Dreessen Avatar.

Anyway, we probably didn't see Katnik last season, because (as true Jets fans know) Herm was dead against developing young talent. Period!

If we've got a young guy with some potential, why not try to develop him and address other needs on draft day? I'm all for seeing what this kid could do. Especially given the current state of the team.

I agree with that. Give him a chance, see what ehe can do and decide inTC whjo is going to start for the Jets in 06. I think the position center is more about technique( for double blocking, pulling, etc), than just about strenght.

    Avatar?

Since when did having any player's avatar mean anything? For the uninformed I have Joel dressen's avatar because he is colorado KID. bUT back to Katnik, I will be more than happy if he is servicable, it has been reported he can play all or most of the positions on the O line. I am just one of those people who is cautious and doesnt hype someone who hasnt played a game. I also cannot understand why if he showed potential he hasnt even stepped in as a replacement,Even Goodwin got to play. Like i said when the rosters are set and he is on and starts or is even the back up, I will be estatic. I wonder if Mangini and Tony Wise are as excited about Katnik as you guys are.

Again, Herm IMO wasn't the best talent evaluator. He's the kind of coach that will do well with a team of solid vets that simply need a swift kick in the ass. Great Motivator.

He's not the kind of coach that will come in and say "hey this kid has potential. Let's give him a shot and see what he can do."

We barely saw Jericho Cotchery on the field (special teams aside) last season, as well as Justin Miller. Two guys who IMO have HUGE upsides. I also believe the only reason Cedric Houston saw so much action was because Herm really had no other choice.

Given the way things started off in 05, we definately should have seen more of these guys. Cotchery as a #2, and Miller opposite Law.

Anyway, to answer your question, this is most likely why we didn't see Katnik on the field. I doubt Herm even gave him a second glance.

I'm beginning to think you could field an entire squad with players Herm wanted to play, but didn't. God, I am glad he is gone.

Im not going to say katnick is good or bad all im saying is, he will play with a chip on his shoulder and is a blue collar worker, those type of guys often do well in the NFL. You never know.

because they never heard of them...some people just dont make the transistion from college to Pro that well....Heismen winner Charlie Ward? how about Tim couch? and many others...his resume in college isnt always what determines his worth on the NFL playign field
