Watch Scherff's game tape vs Pitt - I think that might change your mind. Brandon Scherff is so freaking strong, the games I've seen him play he's pancaked people constantly. He's far more verstaile. Brick can stay at LT for a lil while longer. Brandon Scherff can play guard or tackle.

Peat is very very good I agree, but every-time I hear about Peat they always say he's best in a zone blocking scheme. Dude can shutdown speed rushers though.

I'll watch that game for sure. His game against Maryland was atrocious, but maybe Maryland was throwing some good pass rushers at him.

I'll check out his game against Pitt when I get home.

To me it actually is. 70% BPA + 30% Need. Common sense to me says, if I already drafted a SS last season - I need to look at all the other players that would be the BPA and I will adjust my draft board accordingly.

So if we completely blow the whole thing up, we'll be out of the basement in no time?

What's more likely, getting a great QB when you have the 3 pick of the draft or getting a great GM and a great coach and a great staff and a great FO and you fill in all the wholes and deficiencies when you have Woody Johnson as your owner? We are very far behind the Fins, the Bills and the Pats. Vince Lombardi is not out there.

And I have never ONCE advocated starting Mariota from day 1 or anything close to it, I have ALWAYS advocated starting Vick or another vet for at least a year until Mariota is ready. And that's been archived on this board.

Yet your selective reading gets you to:

I don't see any GREAT QBs in this draft so my answer would be the latter. I hope Woody is watching this season and realizes he needs a football guy here. He pulls a James Dolan and things will trickle down to the coaching staff. The thing about Woody is I think Woody is trying, but he's getting bad advice from the wrong people. That recruiting staff he hired to get Idzik errr questionable at best? If you truly want to become a dynasty, it starts at the top - that's the players you bring in and how you fit the system. The culture being established.

That's great you feel that way and I've felt that way about Mariota for 2 yrs now. He needs to sit - then you will see him potentially become that guy. You make him play too early, the Jets will pay for it in the end. How confident do you feel in a Rex Ryan, Marty and Idzik developing a Mariota?

    To state the obvious, NO.

Pure BPA is really a stupid concept if by that one means it is an effective strategy. Any GM who totally ignores his team's needs during the draft will not keep his job long at all.

I just want to point out on this related issue of how far off the Jets are from contending that one need not, imo, want to go high pick, perhaps even trade up, for a Qb and have that based on a perception that the Jets will not be, cannot, contend for a few years or so.

To the contrary I think with good Qb play the list of holes to be addressed in order to become competitive is not that great. You've got Cb and OG at the top, and arguably OLB as a pass rusher (Coples apparently is not going to be sufficient there, with Pace on the downside and Babin inconsistent). That's doable, and the Jets can be competitive, IF the Jets get a good Qb.

Even if Mariota is obtained, though, and Vick or some equivalent vet (I am on record doubting anyone like that is likely to be available) plays next year and stays healthy, while an SB is not likely, the Jets could be competitive, and Mariota could learn the position while hopefully other pieces of the team come more together than at present.

Sounds like an optimist post, for all those who consider me a darksider, but I don't think it's all that far off.

You realize that what Dolan pulled was a marketing ploy, right? That Phil Jackson will have no impact on or be able to change how badly the Knicks are going to suck for the next 5 years, right? The NBA is a superstar league and unless he can convince LeBron or Durant to come (and THEN add more chips) or draft the next Jordan his triangle offense and transcendental meditation won't have the Knicks winning more than 4 games a year for the next 5 years (or until he quits, which could be sooner)?

Not my job. I want the superstar prospect QB (and it it Mariota) first and then figure it out.

No jags or retreads or journeymen to build around, because the foundation is faulty.

It's the most important position in all of sports and we need to get him now when we are in position to do so.

Btw, I have 1000x more confidence in Marty developing Mariota into a superstar than I have in Woody blowing this thing up and building a solid football front office.

The dude hired a consulting firm to find his last GM.

What competent NFL owner does that?

Imo 101 is often a good poster, but he's having a bit of a bad week right now. If I were him (not that I have ever been in that position) I would rethink this whole BPA thing. For the reasons you point out.

If a GM puts that much weight on BPA versus need, common sense for that GM would be to draft the SS this season provided he's a significantly better prospect than the BPA in a position of need. Since the fact a SS was drafted last season factors only 30%, chances are still pretty high we might draft a SS again if he's the BPA.

Yep. Much as I would like to think Woodrow is not only about to fire Idzik but also hire a better GM to replace him, it would be foolish to hold my breath on that. Realistically, getting Marty to work with a prospect is far more likely to yield results than pursuing a strategy where Woodrow pursues an overall roster upgrade by effectively choosing the right GM to do that, replacing Idzik.

Having said that, the Achilles heel in your strategy is if Idzik is still the GM next draft, he will have to engineer obtaining Mariota. Marty developing Mariota is also more likely than Idzik achieving that, if not by the same 1000 times multiple as in the Woodrow comparison.

I agree, I normally am on board with what he says actually. Forget the BPA, I've gone back and forth on it myself over time and I've settled on my mantra that you win by having a good QB, protecting the QB well, and getting to the QB well. I take BPA when it comes down to those particular items, because the focal point to me is the QB in today's NFL. On offense, if you have a good QB and can give him all day to throw, I don't care who your WRs or TEs or RBs are, he's going to make you pay. And vice versa on defense. I don't care as much about the secondary if you have a pass rush that can get to the QB or really disrupt his timing and rhythm. It all revolves around the QB play.

Now, that's not to say those other pieces aren't important. They are. But those are the key elements that without them, you're a middle of the road team at best anyway. So take Mariota and Cooper and let's pretend they're equal prospects and ignore our individual evaluations. If there's a QB of equal value to a WR (and I don't have a good QB yet), I'm taking the QB 10 times out of 10. If the Jets don't think there's a franchise QB in the draft, then the next thing I look at is OL and OLB. Nothing but okay prospects at those positions? Fine we can talk about a WR now. Until those 3 facets are locked down, I think it's the most sensible route to take.

You see a marketing ploy and that's fine but I see structure and I don't see Dolan putting his hands in the cookie jar as much as he used to. The Knicks already have a superstar in Melo, but the pieces around him are awful. They are transitioning to the triangle offense. They are rebuilding. Knicks have a very bright future but fans will need to toughen it out for another year. Knicks lack a lot of pieces they could not obtain over the off-season

Woody knows absolutely nothing about football, again I think he's been given the wrong advice and he's listening to the wrong people - I do think he tries. Also, how many QBs has Marty successfully developed? I like Marty but I remember him getting another great Oregon prospect and well the rest is history.

30% is still 30% if I have a strong safety on the roster I drafted last year, more than likely I will look at another position. If that SS is a potential HOF level player then maybe I might look to draft him. The talent level would have to be so far apart between the SS I drafted last yr and the SS I would look to draft this year.

My BPA concept is a different concept but it works for me. Everyone has different opinions on who the BPA is. When a team creates their draft board, position I am sure plays a role in who is on top of that draft board and who is not.

The Jets actually already did this with Coples and Richardson.

My week has been just fine aside from a migraine I've been suffering for the past month. You don't even pay attention to college football - I don't want to be a dick but your input on that particular discussion has less value. I encourage you to watch college football for the rest of the season and formulate your own opinions - because that's all they are at the end of the day.

The bold is so true. It's quite a dilemma. Along with the bold, I've reached the point where I feel Rex has wore out his welcome. Idzik's deeply flawed roster shined a bright light on Rex's deficiencies. What do we do? Do we keep the CS in tact for one more year? Let Rex go? But Rex out most likely would mean Marty out too. I don't know if my TVs can survive another Hackett, Schitty, Sporano era. Maybe a new HC would be "encouraged" to retain MM; we've already established a precedent when Rex kept Schitty. Make MM the HC? He was such an aggressively bad HC though. Could he be better the second time around like Bellicheat? A lot of different ways to go, but the common denominators must be draft Mariota and however long that firing list is, Idzik has to be at the top of the page.

I ftr have not expressed any opinions about specific college prospects as my own. i have been careful not to do that.

I don't have the time to watch college football. I have a large property and am too far down the DIY road to change course now, that and it would literally cost me money to pay people to do shit so that I can sit inside Saturdays in the fall (when I am most busy) and watch even more football than the NFL. I have to draw the line somewhere. PLus it's good exercise, and keeps me outdoors. It's just my situation.

Plus I can do what I have to do and merely rely here on the excellent insights into college prospects provided by people like Stokes. It's all good.
