He apparently likes to get his playmakers in space as much as possible, which makes me think we're more likely to retain Harvin (assuming this GM actually has an interest in cooperating with the coaches' schemes)
David Nelson's response to Chan Gailey's hire: @DavidNelson86 What?! Take me back! I'd play 4 Chan 4 free RT @BruceExclusive: @DavidNelson86 thought his worlds were colliding be4..Chan is the #Jets OC.
FINALLY an OC who understands that the name of the game is to find ways to get the ball to your playmakers, your stars on offense! Under Schotty, Sparano, and Morninweg, we always seemed to use our stars as decoys in key situations, instead trying to throw to role players like Salas, Cumberland, or throwing a bomb to a FB running a go route downfield lol....finally we have a real OC who understands NFL offense!
No, in 1996 they didn't use the spread aka pistol, he instituted it in 1997 (oh look, that's one of the years you mentioned). Now is your time to shine, big fella, what scheme did they use during that season? And how does it compare to Schotty?
Well, we did have Decker and Harvin this year. And one of our few wins this year Decker had 200+ yards, in most of the losses he was ignored. Harvin was mostly ignored. Even Ivory didn't get the ball nearly enough. Instead, they insisted on throwing to TJ Graham, Greg Salas and Cumberland. Especially maddening when those guys were targeted in key game situations!
Harvin was mostly injured. And Decker spent some time on the pine as well. So, I think the number of games that both were on the field and at near 100% was like, two games. Plus, you kinda have to go where the coverage isn't. But, point taken...
Yeah, but look at what the Cowboys did on that key 4th and 2 ..... they toss it up to a covered Dez Bryant, their biggest star and playmaker, and he goes up and makes a spectacular catch that really should have counted. The Cowboys have always understood it, maybe that's why they have the stars on their helmets? And Chan Gailey, remember, has experience with Dallas. That's a plus.
FA RB I like for that are Helu Jr., Antone Smith, Vereen. I like Bilal but he's not even close to being a playmaker like these guys.
True, but they're still playmakers, and much better than Graham and Salas. My point is that I'd rather have an OC who devises ways to get the ball to his stars rather than throwing to scrubs the defense ignores instead. Those scrubs often drop the ball or don't make the play, while stars can make plays even if the D gives them a little more attention. Plus when they do, it usually ends up being a big play, while the Grahams and Salases of the world get the 5-6 yard gains.
Yeah, I'd agree if our "stars" were of the Dez Bryant quality or could stay on the field long enough to build a chemistry. Decker was lost for many games. Harvin got here injured and stayed injured. And you seem to have forgotten Grahams long TD catch or Salas's contributions. To me, Decker and Harvin are "pseudo stars": guys who are "stars" because you really ain't got nobody else you can possibly call a star. Decker dropped more than a couple of balls that could have made a difference. Harvin? a couple of plays here and there between injuries. Yeah, I agree: get the ball to your stars, especially at crunch time. But, also: Get some fucking REAL Stars on this team.
Thanks, we are all football fans as well as fans of our respective teams. I am fine with other AFC East teams getting better, it will make the winner more ready to win Superbowls. Had to post here because over the last two years I really missed Chan calling the plays. If we had Chan calling the offense with our D we would have made the playoffs this year. Good luck this year as Todd Bowles and Chan Gailey are very solid football moves. If your new GM is any good you guys will be tough to beat.
Much like we already know...the ONLY real fly in the ointment here is Geno. Is unequivocally, 100%, full blow and absolutely the WRONG QB for this kind of offense. Even more so than his previous offense. Geno has proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he cannot read defenses. The one absolute about Gailey's offense is that it REQUIRES a QB that can read a defense and set his personnel and call out the proper route trees. We REALLY need to do our due diligence when bringing/drafting in a signal caller.
The Jets don't have a significant cap investment in Geno. One of the benefits of cleaning house is being able to look at the current roster with draft agnostic eyes. Where these guys were picked no longer matters. The only things that matter is can they contribute to winning and how badly would it hurt the Jets cap to move them. Geno has close to no penalty to dump, so it really boils down to what the new leadership thinks they can get out of him.
Agreed...but this does narrow down whom we can look at. For example, I don't think, personally, that Cutler has the mental capacity to run Gailey's offense. Definitely NOT Hoyer. Bradford...he has the mental make up but I just do not think St. Louis is getting rid of this guy. Who else is left on the F/A market that could run it? (Not being facetious, I really am asking!) I can't comment on the current crop of draftable QB's either. I don't think Winston has it between the ears to run an offense like this...maybe Mariotta...then again, I don't think either of those guys make it to us at 6...but I don't know. I'm not so certain about Simms...I mean, if, as all these previous posters are touting who he has made productive, Gailey can work magic on a guy like Fitzpatrick why not on a guy like Simms? I don't know the answer. But I will say that I really don't like the fact of signing on for a known shit year. I want to think that we'll, at the very least, be competitive. I think Bowles will have our team headed in the right direction defensively but will it be enough to offset what is absolutely going to be a horrid offense. Depending upon who we put under center, we could actually be WISHING for 2014's offense.
