I know Fitz is not a great QB. But he seems to be a capable game manager. Our team resembles the recent Ravens SB champion pretty closely (not saying we are that good yet, but our team is built the same way). Great D, solid running game, and mediocre QB. We do have better WRs than that Ravens team had, that's for sure (I think their best receiver was Brandon Stokley!) My question to you is this: who do you think is better, Trent Dilfer or Fitz? I would say it's close, but maybe Fitz....so we MAY have a good enough starter to pilot a ship built on D and a solid running game.
^ ^ ^ The 2000 Ravens SB championship team had a top 3 ALL-TIME defense. As for Dilfer he threw a better deep ball, just ask Jason Sehorn, he has to scorch marks to show for it.
Fitz has been more than fine. No Decker. No Ivory. No Owasso. Colon gets injured. 1st NFL game for Devin Smith The above as well as our rb's running for 2.8 yards a carry and two TO's that we can attribute to Marshall (Not hating of the dude, he has done more than we could ask for so far), as well as a TD pass he dropped in the endzone. Our D missed a lot of tackles, we gave up a punt return for TD and the wheel route burned our Linebackers. Relax. Lets see how the London game goes before goin' nuts.
Saying Chan Gailey is the best OC we've have in years is making the "cream of the crap" argument which sometimes happens when talking about a Jet CS. Its all relative...
The problem with that type of argument is that the league has evolved since then. That Is not a recent team winning a SB, that is a team that won a SB 15 years ago. A lot has changed since then, this is a major passing league, where the rules have been changed to cater to these passing offenses. I would argue that team would not win a SB in this current version of the NFL. We need a impact player at the QB position if we want to maintain success. We can win with this team, Its just not likely we make much noise, even if we do manage to get into the playoffs.
The D played 2 excellent quarters of football, and really only gave up 17 points. The problem was they kept throwing long, when they really didn't have to. The guy has 80% completion stat for 15 and under, and 20-something % on over 15. There was no urgency on clock management from the O. No running game. I'm sorry but Powell is a bumbling statue. Add in the fact that Marshall wrote checks with his mouth, that his ass tried to cash, and couldn't. No legit #2 receiver. It's hard to pinpoint 1 thing that caused such a poor performance, but I'm pretty sure giving up 17 points wasn't the reason.
Can't say I agree with the claim that it was conservative O play calling either. How many times did they go down field, even when it was ill advised? Hack-it would have never called those plays. Instead of 10-15 yards, they'd need 8 and throw for 4 and hope for YAC to get the 1st. That's conservative.
the D allowed two touchdowns and a FG...thats not THAT bad. they also didnt allow any scores in the second half and created a turn over for fitz who missed every single pass attempted beyond 20 yards. and threw 3 interceptions. geno didnt have marshall or decker for most of last year and even he was able to hit people deep on some passes lol.. i dont think he has completed a deep pass all year including pre season. the guy simply cant throw beyond 20 yards... so if we are ever behind early and cant run the ball its GG with fitznoodle.
well damn Chan's old ass can't block for the RB's.. cant run for the RB's.. Can't make fitz gain arm strength. He didn't call as bad of a game as the execution made it seem. PLENTTTY of open WR's that were either ignored or was thrown an awful pass. What really killed us that game was the Marshall thingy and the punt return.
I'd love to know how many check downs and changes of the play at the line of scrimmage RF called in that game. I find it hard to believe Gailey called a whole game of dump passes to Powell 2 yards behind the LOS. RF was GOD awful.
I know I fuckin' butchered it. Not the first person to call me out. I guess I'm going to have to buy his jersey to repent ...
