bailey is not getting signed in the next 7 days. maybe after week 1 we take a look, but we are not going to be on the hook for his entire year's salary if he does not work out. that said i would line up a work out and a physical
Didnt we already make this mistake last season by picking up Ed Reed? Let's learn from our mistakes guys.
Probably right. Still, he was pretty dinged up during camp so his performance during the preseason may not be representative of how much, if anything, he really has left in his tank. Just look at how banged up (or lost for the season) most of our CBs are. Finally, after yesterday's cuts, Rob Ryan has 5 CBs , giving him a total of 10 DBs on his roster compared to 4 and 9 respectively for us (5 and 9 actually when counting Allen playing Corner instead of Safety). With Milliner and Allen not likely to play in the opener, that leaves us with just Wilson, Walls and Lankster as our only available CBs to play against the Raiders. That, obviously, won't do. Point is, Rob Ryan may have just made his decision to cut Champ based on having good depth of young and healthy players at the position leaving Bailey (whose combination of price tag and so far sub par playing form) the expendable/the odd man out. Short of better alternatives presenting themselves in the immediate term, I wouldn't be against taking a flyer on him to see to what extent, if any, he can be a viable contributor at the position, even if only as an emergency back up or nickel/dime package player.
This is a possibility, but something tells me he didn't see the Champ Bailey he thought he was getting. They went out and signed him to a decent amount of money. I think it was 7 million for 2 years. His injuries certainly had something to do with it, but I think he might have realized he was better off sticking with the youth on the roster. The good part is Champ still wants to play. His heart and head is still in it, so maybe signing him on the cheap is a good idea.
As picking up Ed Reed last season was not a mistake, the answer to your question would be no. Of course, if you can justify how it was a mistake, at least one of us is bound to learn something.
How was it a mistake? We signed Ed Reed for pennies. He helped tremendously with the youth development and was the key reason as to why the younger guys have an entirely new outlook on film study. That was said by the guys themselves, not some made up story. He brought quality leadership to a very young group of guys. He did not hinder any development on this team and he did not impact anything in a negative way. It was a cheap solid signing that helped our secondary in many ways.
