You just mentioned three guys. From the looks of the films, you're getting all three with this guy, you just don't know which one he's going to be on any given play. And then there's that special teams thing...
The guy had 22 carries last year and 15 receptions for 4.7 yards a catch. Mike Alstott he is not. In terms of Richie Anderson he's a not also ran. What's the point of carrying a small lead blocker in today's NFL? And by small I mean not an offensive lineman.
The best blocking TE the Jets have currently on the roster is Zach Sudfeld. The Jets are going to need something of a blocking presence outside of the Oline unless they want both Vick and Geno trading injury games all season. I get that FB appears to be pushed to the back burner for a lot of teams, it just doesn't make sense for this particular team with it's current makeup. Broad generalizations about NFL trends don't necessarily apply directly to the Jets in 2014.
As long as Rex is here we will utilize the FB The importance is really undervalued actually AP for example plays better with Felton lead blocking If Young or Bohanon can help get Ivory or CJ in space to either pound DBs or Shake and Bake LBs then you do it Instead of letting your RB get stuffed by LBs
I normally agree about the broad generalizations part, but how you lay it out they would just bring in another OL and stack the line. The only thing you sacrifice would be the fullback/TE's ability to catch the ball, but since in this instance they would be in there for blocking anyway - you might as well get an OL who can block better and not worry about it. The only shot this kid has of making the team is special teams. They aren't and should keep a blocking FB on the roster for blocking.
Rex is old school and that's not a good thing in this instance. The reason FBs are dying out isn't because they are undervalued, it's because they were overvalued in the past and are pointless for a team to keep on the roster. The best way to run the football in the NFL now (and college, really) is to spread them out with receivers and run underneath it. The best way to stop your RB from getting stuffed is to make it so there are less LBs out there for them to get stuffed by. It's pointless to send a FB in front of a RB, because all that does it ensure that a LB will follow that FB wherever he goes. Sometimes the FB will be able to block him and sometimes he won't but why even do that? The only instance I can think of where it would make any sense to have a blocking FB on the field is in short yardage, obvious running situations (and even that is questionable) ... but if he's just in there to block, why not just put another OL in there who blocks BETTER?
I don't agree, having a solid fullback gives you a lot of options on offense If you can incorporate the FB into the play action game say on 3rd and short and allow the FB to slip out the backfield for the 1st then you take it One thing I noticed is defenses never cover the FB ever
Lining imagine a guard out trying to block an ILB in open space... It just doesn't work dude. Some teams don't need a true FB if they have a guy who can do it occasionally. We are not one of those teams.
NFL athletes have grown significantly in size since the 70's and 80's. There's just no point to putting a 240 lb blocker in the backfield at this point. If the guy is there to block put a 260-270 pound h-back there instead, at least he has a realistic chance to block a runaway train loose in the backfield. He has the length to handle a blitzing LB if that's what's there. You have to have a very special skill set to justify being on the field at this point. A FB who can catch a lot of passes or runs very well fits the definition. A FB who just blocks does not.
Well it's less about size than power and technique. I like Tommy Bohanon because he can run the ball some and act as an outlet receiver. A true H-Back is very hard to come by, otherwise more teams would use them.
Holy s-it! How did this guy not get drafted! White boy can play. Like a shorter, stubby armed Alstott. Bohannon can catch the ball the ball though. Will be interesting to see them in camp.
Some short stubby armed white guys can play in the NFL. The Jets passed on Welker and cut Woodhead. Maybe someday they will learn their lesson about heart and hard work. Sooner rather than later.
As defenses embrace 'finesse' to keep up with the new age passing attacks their worst nightmare is a smash mouth running game with attitude and a pissed off 250 pound bull running back.
There were a few threads about Danny Woodhead, and they got laughed at like this, and then the dumbasses that laughed disappeared. Not saying that you are a dumbass, but do you want to go down that road?
