This is great news for the Jets. A healthy Pennington is one of top 10 QBs in the NFL. As for his arm, I'd much rather have a QB with a mediocre arm but accurate arm and the brains to read defenses.

As for last year, how can you judge him based on the 2 1/2 games he played when he wasn't fully recovered and was being protected by a bunch of matadors on the OL.

And as for cringing when he gets hit, why isn't the same thing being said for Palmer, Culpepper, McNair etc?

It boggles my mind that, after seeing Pennington lead the Jets to the playoffs and two playoff wins in 2002 and 2004, any Jet fan would root against his return in favor of Ramsey or a completely unproven rookie.

And lastly, who says that if Pennington wins the job, it is only for one year? What if he plays well and stays healthy? What if he leads the team to 8 wins or more this year and has a good season? What if Clemens isn't the answer?

I think Jet fans should root for whoever gives the Jets the best chance to win each Sunday. Since 2002 and, it appears, right now, that QB has been Pennington.

Can't be true. It makes absolutely no sense to rush the announcement of a starter less than a week into camp. It's one thing to give one guy the majority of the first team reps, it's an entirely different thing to send out word to the press flunkies so that they can spin it a thousand different ways.

You've watched him in practice, because I have, his arm is even weaker, it couldn't possibly be the same after 2 surgeries! Never said Ramsey was great, but being intelligent, strong armed and 27 years old has possibilities...

    How do you know?

Joe, I largely agree with you. Top ten if healthy with his surrounding question marks? I do have reservations, but not to the extent some of these people that want to see Chad hung are. If he can returrn to the form he had in 2002, that would be awsome. many Jets fans wonder if he can, myself included. I am nervous doing a rebuild behind a QB with Chad's history.
but.... it's almost a pointless issue. If Chad plays that well, Clemens can continue to sit. If Penny's body doesn't hold up this year, there isn't any question. I would be worried if Pennington gets throuh the season, looking so-so, but has a good excuse because the line and WR's didn't get it done.

Yes, even if the Jets are lousy, and Pennington gets through the season but looks very ordinary, then it's definitely time for a change, but there is sure to be a major QB controversy that could be damaging. I hope that once the Jets have lost 10 games, Clemens get some time.

I'd have to think that by now, based on first hand witnesses on this board, and the bit of news clippings that are coming out, that your faith in Howitzer Ramsey would fade at least a little bit. It does not sound as if he has much of a chance based on what feedback we are getting. But hey, stranger things have happened.

Yes, but it doesn't matter if you can't learn the offense, can't make reads,

Because if you look at tonight's practice when he was in command; the O had plenty of false starts and DELAY OF GAME penaltys! Sounds like he doesn't know how to run the O like the other QBs because you don't hear about those guys have any delay of game's. It's TC and he can't get a play called during the 2 minute drill!

Mangini says QB race is wide open
Jets coach insists Pennington hasn't wrapped up job
    Posted: Wednesday August 2, 2006 5:55PM; Updated: Wednesday August 2, 2006 5:55PM

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) -- Though Chad Pennington has outplayed his competition for the open quarterback job, New York Jets coach Eric Mangini insists he has yet to make a decision on a starter.

Mangini said Wednesday he will continue with the four-man rotation of Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens during training camp, refuting a published report that Pennington had already won the job less than a week into practice.

"I can just tell you as the head coach of this football team what I told everyone in here is the same -- the rotation will continue and there is no change on that situation," Mangini said.

"I have not made up my mind yet. As soon as I make up my mind and name a starter I will definitely let you know."

Although it's been pretty clear that Pennington has looked consistently better than the other three in practice, Mangini said that the competition will keep going until he sees what he wants.

"I'm looking for a person to step up and show that they should be the starter," Mangini said. "It's a consistent theme, but it's something I really believe in. Someone has to win that spot. As soon as someone does, then that's the point where we'll make a decision. Until then, it's going to be open."

Asked specifically about Pennington, Mangini said, "Chad has made progress. He's done some good things. But you see it each day, where he'll hit a big play and then it comes back.

"Or Kellen makes a great throw and then an interception. I'm looking for consistency and I'm looking for someone to distinguish himself. I can't say that enough."

The Jets' first preseason game is next Friday against Tampa Bay. Surely, Mangini wants to see his quarterbacks compete in game conditions before making a final decision on a starter.

When asked about the situation, Pennington said the only change he was aware of was the practice schedule, moved from 2 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. to avoid the heat Wednesday.

"Everything is the same," Pennington said. "I don't know where I am as far as the other quarterbacks are concerned and I don't know when (Mangini) will make the decision."

Ramsey, acquired in the offseason in a trade from Washington, also said he knew of no decision being made.

"From my understanding, nothing has changed," Ramsey said. "We're going to continue the same way we've been doing things. I went into this camp expecting what the coaches have told us, and that's that this is a competition. It's been very evenly split up throughout camp."
