I agree with 90% of what you are saying. His Dad had a heart attack, and he went to see him. I would have done the same thing. It's not like he was on his deathbead though, so why didn't he return sooner? And forget about it being football for a second... My point is that if a family member of mine had a heart attack, I'd go see them in the hospital and make sure they were OK. I would then return to work ASAP because I'm doing my family member any good at all if I suddenly have no source of income. Maybe jobs grow on trees on the East coast, but out here you have to scratch and claw to find anything that offers compensation remotely close to your qualifications.
I think you guys may have missed the mark on this one. I don't think Fen was saying his job wouldn't allow him to leave to be with his Dad, but he wouldn't be paid for it. I don't know his situation, but I don't think Fen could take a week off and not miss the money whereas Chad gets his money up front and could take 4 days off and not feel it financially. Its a huge difference and regarding the world Chad lives in, its not the same as ours financially speaking. Chad's job is being a NFL QB. None of us here has that job title. The rules are different for Chad. We all can agree that our family takes priority over the job. In Chad's case, he could take the rest of the season off to be with his dad and still make his bills on time. I'd like to see anyone of US try that...
How do you know he was not on his deathbed? It could have been hit or miss for a couple of days, you have absolutely no idea. Simple put, if you get fired for going to see your dad when he may die, you could probably sue.
I took the better part of a 1/2 year off when my daughter was very sick.... My company paid me, so I can't relate fully though. So now, I wouldn't even THINK of looking for another job. I don't bitch if I do not get a huge raise, because I am still thinking the 6 months of pay and tremendous benefits that made 1 million (yes, I said million) dollars of medical bills turn into $250 out of pocket for me as my raise. I work extra time when I need to. See sometimes it pays for a company to show compassion.. they get more than their sh are in return later.
I'm starting to understand now... I guess NY/NJ are not "Right to Work" states. I can be fired for no reason at any time in CA, partially because I'm a young white male. You cannot sue for your job back out here. Your only recourse is to collect umemployment, which equates to about half your salary. And believe me, people are fired for no reason all the time, and companies have no problem keeping employees. Lose your job out here and expect to be on the market for 4-6 months minimum, unless you want to take a huge step back in your career. I need to move.
I guess I don't have a good enough understanding of heart attacks. I always thought it was BAM! and then you just have to rest a bit if it doesn't kill you, and possibly schedule surgery at some point if your risk of a repeat is high enough. I had no idea it could just happen again right away after the patient is stabalized. I plead ignorance.
People can't be fired for no reason.. Maybe during the probationary period, but once that's over. My company is even more difficult, since we're not for profit, and it takes an average of 12 months to fire someone.. Yes, 1 yr to collect enough documentation. I know we're in the minority, but you can't just fire someone for the heck of it. There are review boards for this sort of behavior in ALL states. I mean can you fire someone due to job performance? Sure, but if you go see your dad for 4 days and get fired, and they do not have any documentation to back up you were doing a lousy job before that time.... guess what... it'll cost them.
Fen, I lived in Arizona for 10 years and its a "Right to Work" state too. Unlike you pardner, I moved. No worker's rights, no fair salaries, nothing. I had to get out of there before I went nutz. Good luck living inna right to work state man. You're gonna need it..
That's the difference between your state laws and ours. You'll see mid to upper level managers there one day, and gone the next for little to no reason. Half the time they have trouble even getting unemployment, even if they did NOTHING to get canned.
Yeah, been here for 6 years following 2 years in Vegas (also RTW). Been through 2 stints on unemployment, both times simply "Laid off" for no reason, which requires no explanation, and cannot disputed legally. Like I said, I need to take the wife and cats and get out of here.
Well, it very much is. Or in the very least, the employment laws are the same regardless of the name. I was a manager in Nevada and then in California, and the employment laws are all the same.
I work in the employee benefits field and this is just wrong. The family and medical leave act assures you of not losing your job. You may not get paid, you may not get a raise, but you are sure as hell guaranteed a job. **this only covers employers with 100+ employees, but courts will rule in your favor if otherwise** Secondly, the more important you are the more latititude you get when it comes to these types of decisions. If you are a burger flipper, no chance you get to take off for a week with no repercusions. However, if you are a manager/executive/professional whatever, no way in hell your boss will tell you no. I have never had a job where I didn't dictate my own terms when starting or had a problem when I needed to take care of personal things on company time (including dealing with ill family members). And the one time a boss did question my allegiance to the company when my son was born, I just went to greener pastures. Now my new employer has a happy individual willing to work an obscene amount of hours in order to make them more profitable.
Exactly the point I was trying to make. My company helped me out in my time of need, and now, even though I may be able to make more somewhere else, you do not see me looking to move. I'm very happy because I know if something comes up, my company will be behind me.
It's so funny how these football players are treated like robots. Not only do they not get vacations during the season and rarely see their families during that time, they get two months before minicamp! Two months until April workouts start. If Chad's farther had died in Knoxville, the last time he might've seen him could've been April.
Wanna bet?? my advice to you is get a better job with a boss that isnt 100% asshole:up: you could use the "right to work" excuse saying Californians have it tougher...but they dont in these circumstances...like i said your job security should be much higher then that in regards to human life and undestanding that family comes first....I live in CALIFORNIA in the freakin Silicon Valley...no one can tell me that the struggle to get and keep jobs are fiercer anywhere else in the whole United States! however with that being said...people dont get fired for leave to see their families in times of life or death...i did it back in March...I flew out to Newark and drove to West Milford to see my dying Grandmother for a whole 6 days...did i have a job when i got back???sure did...did my boss understand the circumstances??? he sure did...this wasnt even my mother or father..it was my freakin grandma...this comes to show that we all as humans have a passionate side and regardless of what region of the US we work in...no one should be denied the right to see their dying family under such circumstances... with that being said...ive had a long day of work...so im gonna head home and play some Madden before the I get cranky from sitting through meetings and fiddling around in my office...
These "Robots" are multimillionaires. Chad had every right to go see his dad. No one is disputing that. These football players are well compensated for what they do and most have college degrees from established universities. They are paid guaranteed money not like the rest of us so no, Joe 6pack has a much harder hill to climb than your pampered pro athelete. You might want to relate them as players and that's fine. Just don't think for a minute they live in the same world you do cause they don't..
