No way does the Jets best chance to make the playoffs next year involve Darnold. You could put Lawrence in this year, and he'd give the Jets a better chance to win than Darnold.
Rookie WR's are notoriously hard to predict. It often takes a season for them to get their feet under them so to speak. Mims had multiple hammy's in camp, a typical rookie yips event. He didn't get a chance to work with Darnold much and when he came back Flacco was the QB then back to Darnold a couple of weeks later. As you point out we have no idea at this point what Mims will turn into. He may still be a #1.
No way does the Chargers best chance to make the playoffs next year involve Brees. You could put Rivers in this year and he'd give the Chargers a better chance to win than Brees. Just saying...
Don't want JuJu after this year. He's being out done by Dionete and Chase on that team, I don't think he's a #1 which I would pay for. Kenny G - yes please. Fuller - no thanks, never healthy enough to complete 16 Godwin - yes please A.rob - give him everything I think if we get Lawrence the main thing would be to spend lots of our premium capital ($ and good picks) on offense. We can use two 1s on D next year if needed. Sent from my M2007J20CG using Tapatalk
Who the hell ever made that argument? The Chargers just didn't want to pay Brees when they had Rivers ready to go, especially since he got injured the last week of the season to such a degree the Dolphins' team doctor red flagged his physical that offseason. And it's not even a valid comparison to compare Brees in San Diego to Darnold here, Brees had TEN THOUSAND times more success in San Diego than Darnold has here.
At the time that Brees was supposedly replaced by Rivers he was 10-17 with the Chargers. He had 29 TD passes and 31 Interceptions on his career. He had passed for 6.0 yards an attempt over 889 career passes. The Chargers were 4-16 with him at QB over his last 20 starts prior to the 2004 draft. They had scored 358 pts over that 20 game span and were held to 2 TD's or less 9 times in 20 games. This is with LaDainian Tomlinson in the backfield and Antonio Gates - 2 future Hall of Famers, in the offense. Brees was considered to be a bust - which is why the Chargers took Eli Manning and then reluctantly traded him for Philip Rivers on draft day. Rivers held out looking for a bigger contract. Brees looked good in camp and he took the Chargers to the playoffs back to back seasons, keeping Rivers on the bench the entire time. The Chargers moved on from Brees not because they didn't want to pay him. They moved on because he tore his labrum (throwing shoulder) in the playoffs in 2005 and they did not want to pay him with a torn labrum when they had Rivers sitting on the bench. And as to who made that argument? The Chargers fans in 2003 when they were verging on drafting Eli Manning #1 and ready to kick Brees to the curb as a bust. Not saying that Darnold is going to turn it on and hold the job if Lawrence holds out on the Jets next season but it has happened before and the guy who suddenly turned it on is one of the great QB's of all time - after appearing to be a total bust 3 years after he was drafted.
It's easy to say that but Drew Brees wasn't no Drew Brees in 2003 when the Chargers made the first moves towards replacing him. He was a bad QB who made mistakes all over the place and whose team was losing because of his bad play. Again, I'm not saying Darnold is any better than Brees was in 2003 but he certainly isn't worse.
Anything's possible, but Darnold reaching Brees's level is an extremely unlikely outcome. Even getting anywhere near it is unlikely.
Brees was also an undersized second round pick when no undersized QB's had ever succeeded in the NFL before, so of course he was going to get even less slack from the fanbase and management early in his career. And no he wasn't replaced after his third season (his second season playing), the GM just drafted his heir apparent a la the Packers multiple times. He still played in SD two seasons after that and they pretty much knew he was a good QB they were letting walk out the door by then. Brees never went 0-16 either or had his backup outplay him on the same team, just saying.
Yeah, but if you sign younger FAs, they'll be around for more than just 1 or 2 years, they'll become part of the foundation along with the draftees. I'm not advocating going crazy and over-paying, but signing some really good FAs is part of the recipe to building a good team. If we simply relay on the draft it'll take 4-5 years to accumulate the talent needed.
This is why Lawrence needs a proven weapon besides Crowder. The Bills signed Beasley and Brown to aid Allen in year 2 before getting Diggs in year 3. Cards got Hopkins for Murray in year 2. We can't solely rely on draft picks to develop Trevor. If Mims takes a year 2 jump, we could have two good WR's in 2021 without any further acquisitions, but that's a big if and Crowder should ideally be the #3 WR. Ideally, we have a FA, Mims, Crowder, and a draft pick next year, to give us a combination of experience and youth at the position.
I think JD won’t splash in free agency much. It not a destination spot for free agents and we would have to over pay. A lot of teams are in cap hell next year. Look for JD to make a trade for a top end WR. My guess is Michael Thomas, Julio Jones and Odell Beckham will be available
