Geno Smith has his issues, but he hasn't gotten any help for sure. If we draft Mariota, he'll have the same issues if we don't actually go and try to improve the offense. Eric Decker was a start, but we need way MORE than that. Chris Johnson is also washed up.
I want a pro-style QB. Not another guy that takes 100% of his snaps from shotgun. Based on last year I would respectfully pass on Mariota. Have to see how this year plays out before I can really be strongly for or against.
We needed a QB when we drafted Geno so reaching on a guy who clearly isn't franchise material or has questions i.e.; no Oregon QB has ever been anything other than a product of the system they play in just sets you back. Let's assume we don't take Geno last year we would have been in position to take a guy like Bortles, Bridgewater or Carr this year.
Idzik is Geno's #1 fan. Then again we have already established Idzik kows nothing of football or coaching.
We weren't in a position to get Bortles but you are so right on Bridgewater and Carr. Never should have drafted a QB out of that awful 2013 class considering the strong 2014 class. _
But Idzik would have been making a direct indictment of himself for a perceived failed pick had he grabbed another QB with a top pick. Geno's last 4 games cemented the position that Idzik was not going to draft a QB high. And those 4 games really weren't great. _
We know out of all the teams in the NFL the Packers and Patriots are two of the three teams with the longest streak of good QB play, other than the Colts. The Packers drafted and traded for 22 QBs (not counting undrafted FAs) over a 24 year period, out of which they got Favre and Rodgers. Twenty of the QBs were pretty worthless, but they have been good at the QB position for two decades now. Persistence paid off, but they did have a lot of busts during that time. The Patriots drafted 9 QBs (plus FAs like Hoyer) in the last 14 years. Bledsoe was a good QB in that system, and then Brady is HOF, but they have also produced other NFL caliber QBs (Cassel who was starting until he got hurt and Hoyer who is lighting it up for the Browns and also Mallett.) Successful teams are ones with good QBs, and it takes more than one hail marry to get the guy. It takes a lot of drafting, signing FAs and luck. Spending a 1st on Sanchez and a second on Smith in five year period is average for an NFL team at best. So Sanchez was serviceable which is better than most QBs drafted in the 1st round and Geno is a bust which is typical for 2nd round QBs. The Jets have drafted a lot of QBs over the years, but we can't stop now. Hell the Redskins not only traded three 1st rounders and a 2nd to get RGIII, but then spent a 4th rounder in the same draft to get Cousins and good thing they did. We need to draft a QB every year until we get our franchise guy.
we need to draft and create an amazing offensive line. with this all other offensive weapons would be easier to find. if we draft any QB with our current state of players, we will fail.
The Jets need to break the cycle of drafting in shit years for the QB position. That's not going to happen if they draft a QB in the first round of the 2015 draft.
I expect 2016's QB draft class to be much better. I could see the Jets sticking with Geno next year with a new coach, since he won't get canned for a down year. I expect the Jets to draft a QB in 2015, but don't expect him to be a top prospect.
I'll have to watch some more of Mariota, but from what little I know, I dont want to bring in a guy who is just a better version of Geno. It sounds like he has a better arm and is more accurate, but if he needs to learn how to play from under center and learn how to make multiple reads, than no thank you. I know those arent things that are valued too highly at Oregon, so I'd be weary of drafting a guy that might appear to be a project. I'd prefer to take someone like Cooper, or whoever the best LT/CB is. Then in the 2nd or 3rd take a QB who knows how to play from under center, and can run a solid play action play. Again, I'm going to do further research on Mariota so I can evaluate him (like it matters lol), so I dont get labeled a Geno apologist lol.
Exactly, they knew 2013 was a weak year and they chose to draft Geno and then threw Sanchez to the wolves essentially making Geno their guy whether he was ready or not. I think Carr will be pretty good if he doesn't die in Oakland. They could have had the foresight to know that Geno was nothing more than a project, sucked it up with Sanchez one more year who honestly would not have been much worse than Geno last year and been in the running for a potential franchise QB this year.
I can see them sticking with Geno, or even having an actual competition with Geno and a QB either traded for or signed in FA, and trying their luck during the 2015 season, but if they handcuff themselves to another QB goose chase for another 3-4 years... then that SOJ mantra gains a whole new meaning.
I like that kid from East Carolina on the second day. Carden or something. I have watched him pretty closely a couple times and he can play in the NFL
Seems that a good amount of people in this thread want Bradford.... If he stays healthy he is a steal
Has nothing to do with Geno, that's how I feel in general. I don't think spending 1st or 2nd round Qbs until you think you have one where he could have 1-2 nice starts to his career is wise. You don't know what you have in a QB until a few downs the road before they start to show a good chunk amount of consistency.
