I wouldnt go nuts if they traded Revis - he is an awesome player but an average teammate and seems to show little leadership. he will also want an insane next contract and there are too many teams with several times the cap space we have for us to ever win a bidding war (especially as we will have had him through his peak).
We should absolutely be looking to get as much in trade as possible for Revis next year. Hopefully we can pull a hershal walker deal ...
If you say so but as so many others on the board say Tanny is the miracle worker I am sure he could find some way to get it done NOW if he is sooooooooooooooo good
There's a big difference between manipulating the cap to work for any given year and manipulating the cap to work with a massive unplanned cap hit. The Revis contract just wasn't designed to be getting rid of him prior to 2013.
The prorated signing bonus would all hit this years cap if we traded him. Next year it's more manageable even though we'd still take a dead money hit.
He is the best cornerback in football and works harder than anyone else on our team. He gives it his all every single play. He took Kyle Wilson under his wing during the offseason and taught him how to be a good cornerback as he is doing again this year. He has never caused problems in the lockerroom and everyone seems to like him as a person. What more could you want from him?
In total agreement. I see so many Jets fans complaining about our D and our focus on CBs. Yet we continually rank high in Pass D year in and year out and most of that is thanks to Revis. While he's gonna want a lot of money the second we get rid of him we're gonna be having WRs putting up the big numbers we haven't seen since the Mangini years IN ADDITION to the TEs destroying our week safeties. I see Revis and the CBs as the only thing keeping our poor coverage middle together. DO I want a better front 7? Sure, but not at the expense of the best player (arguably) in the history of his position.
Have you been paying attention this off-season? The Jets have tons of holes and haven't been able to sign anyone of note to plug these holes (unless you think Chaz Shillens is the answer.) The cap problems are here and they are real
It doesn't make a difference even if they do end up on the 53. They'll count for pretty much the same money as any other players Jets would add on the 53. They are not starters and will get the league minimum. It doesn't void my argument. Harris might be able to save us $3 mil by pushing it towards his final year, 2014. But Mangold will not get a contract restructure next year. His base in 2013 will be $2.5 mil. Don't just throw figures without having anything but ur imagination to back it up. Lets assume we need starters at TE, WR, OLB, ILB, FS, RG and LG. Their average salaries will be much more than $20mil. U can keep the year one salary low, but all you are doing is pushing tons of cap towards the future, kinda like the situation we would be in 2013 with our top 6 guys making $71 mil or top 10 guys making $105 mil, leaving $15 mil of cap space for the other 43 guys, including 14+ starters. Releasing Scott and Pace frees up $15mil, but it doesn't change the fact pace would be a cap casualty. He's a decent OLB. You don't release decent OLB unless you have a better younger backup, or you need some cap space to work with. We sure could have used Mario Williams and/or Vincent Jackson this year, except we were in "cap problems". You don't have to release tons of players to show you are in cap problem. Simply not signing any decent starters at positions you are in desperate need of is also cap issues. I know every year people claim we'd be in cap hell, but Tanny keeps us out of it. He was bailed out BIG TIME last year with the release of Woody, Jenkins and Ghost. It carried dead money of around 10 mil (I think), not counting a single penny against the Jets cap for the year.
Thank you. People here keep complaining why we didn't sign this LB and that WR. Theres a reason and its called Salary Cap issues.
Every team could use Mario Williams. The reason why we don't have room for his giant contract is because we already have a lot of talent on our team. Teams like the Bills with far less talent can afford to sign him just like we can use a big contract on Revis. As far as not signing any decent starters Landry is a decent starter and we resigned BT. Everyone is so please me now with this fanbase and complains no matter what we do. All year it is lets build through the draft and stop with FA. Now its why aren't we signing anyone lets trade for all these people.
cover safety blocking te another WR RT O line depth ILB depth OLB You're not gonna fix all those holes with one rookie class. If you have a GREAT draft you're gonna fix 3 or 4 of them. If you fix 2 of them it's still a pretty good draft. The Jets were suppose to be Super Bowl contenders remember? That's not gonna happen if unless Tannenbaum can plug some of these holes with free agents. The problem is he doesn't have the necessary coin to sign quality players. Instead they're gonna take fliers on cheap players (Schillens is a prime example) and hope they get lucky. That's what cap hell is, and it's here for the 2012 New York Jets!
Hopefully Santonio will do well this year and raise his trade value (technically create trade value because currently he has so little it's negative) to make another team think that Santonio for a 5th round pick is a steal for them. He or Cro's gotta go. The development of Kyle Wilson will determine Cro's expendability.
I think you are reaching on the holes. Every team has holes, you figure it out and try to gameplan around it if you can't fix it. The major needs seem to be OLB, RT/oline depth. I am a little upset that the FO has not addressed the O line at all, but there is still a lot of time. They could be waiting for cuts and etc which happen every year. There is a good chance the Jets can fix OLB in the draft picking at 16 with a variety of choices. There is also a chance they whiff, but they can improve that through the draft. If the draft breaks out real weird they could immediately bolster RT and improve depth, or drastically improve the RB or WR situation, but that is only if the draft breaks strange. I think cap hell is a reach too. They have 7.5 to 8 million left in space. Just because a team can't sign big time free agents doesn't mean they are in cap hell.
Sanchez is a lot more expensive then Tebow and I am sure given his outlook on life Tebow would be willing to sign a reasonable contract the next time he re-ups. This is how successful teams are punished you draft well you sign quality FAs and then you can't afford them all after a few years. Then you need to move some. Then you rebuild again. The cap is a very tricky thing to get a handle on.
Every team has holes but most Super Bowl contenders have fewer and/or are in better position to fix these holes (more cap room, more draft picks, more trade bait.) Obviously they can improve through the draft, and that's an absolute necessity if they have any hope of remaining playoff contenders. The fact is if Tannenbaum whiffs on two of his first three picks and doesn't find any late-round gems they are in serious trouble. He MUST have a good draft, and that's a tough position to be in because of how uncertain players coming out of college are. But it's possible he'll have a good draft and won't necessarily get a lot of contributors this year. Plenty of good safeties spend their rookie year playing special teams and in a limited amount of sub-packages. What if that's what your 2nd round pick turns out to be? How much is this one draft class really gonna be able to help in 2012? I do think you make a good point when you talk about it being early. It's only early April, players often get cut after the draft, so there's still a lot left to the team-building process. However, things are looking bleak. Cap hell isn't a reach at all. As of March 30th the Jets had just under 7.7 million dollars of cap space*. That may sound like a lot but most of it is devoted to the draft and in-season emergency money. They have around 2-3 million dollars to spend, and how many veterans do you want to see brought it? When training camp rolls around you're gonna see a lot of competition for roster spots happening between unproven players, which is gonna look ugly when players inevitably start getting hurt. * source http://blogs.nfl.com/2012/03/30/salary-cap-situation-for-each-team/
Every team has holes. The point is to have talent in other spots that can cover up the spots that are lacking talent. Revis helps cover up the fact that we don't have a pass rush. You said 3 of our holes are just depth related and easily fixable. FS, LB, RT, and WR are the real issues and you have to think our 1st fixes one of those with still cap room to sign Leonhard and Braylon. Our safeties wouldn't be such a problem if we can get a pass rusher round 1. If not I'd rather get a RT since our D will always be tough.
