This. Show me a situation in the NFL over the last 30 years where "tanking" makes you a super bowl winning team. Everyone keeps mentioning the Colts for Luck. The Colts? Like they are the poster child for winning. They can't even win the sorry AFC South. Create a winning culture and have a FO that can draft well with a coaching staff that knows how to develop young talent in the late rounds and you create a winning franchise. Drafting 3 spots earlier in a draft doesnt ensure success.

The NBA of course has a lottery system, and it's been called into question many times, and disheartened a few teams, Philly in particular.

Mainly because it does appear fixed. But it doesn't discourage any team because I think they all throw money at majority owners who basically decide what lotto ball is going to "fall".

As badly as I view the NFL, the NBA will always be closer to the WWE.

They live for the hero winner douche guy with the most charisma to walk out the tunnel telling everyone that they're going to kick some ass. It's truly pathetic.

Blame rap culture, blame millennials, I just think it's human nature for the general moron public to want to follow assholes.

Agreed with this 1000% percent. NBA with 5 players on the court....tanking CAN work. Not in the NFL. Best post I've see in a while. Vilma nailed it.

Nonsense. More than one team often wants the same player. You may be able to move up, but the cost may be ridiculous. Lots of teams don't want to move up or down.

It's not a matter of sucking vs building a winning culture. That's absurd. No one has advocated tanking from day one of the season.

Further proof that some of you don't watch the games.

    - Bollinger was 11/20 for 153 yards in the season finale of 2005. 11/19 for 100 yards the week prior. He also completed 56% of his passes for 5.9 yards/attempt that year.

    - McElroy was 14/24 for 184 yards w/ 1 pick in his lone appearance against the Chargers in 2015

    - Kellen Clemmens was just putrid in 2007 completing 52% of his passes with 5TD's/10 picks.

None of these performances felt remotely similar for any of these hacks compared to what we saw out of Petty yesterday.

Bollinger & McElroy were also extremely late round selections who obviously had no future with the team. They weren't protected and developed in hopes of having a future with the team. They were tossed in there in what the hell nothing to lose situations.

The franchise wants to develop Petty, and has taken the competent steps to do so.

Not even close, i just don't think one subpar performance against the worst team in the NFC is any reason to think this guy will be the answer. I would rather him start because he might have a chance to be a backup for this team, Fitzpatrick has no place here and should've been permanently benched weeks ago.

I'm not gonna sit here and let someone tell me I don't watch the games when I sit through this shit every god damn year.

Personally I just haven't seen anything from him that makes me say "this is the guy who could one day play a part in taking us to the playoffs" he started off horrendously but of course found his groove.

Rooting for this team to tank is not something I enjoy but when you are as historically bad as we are in the drafting department, at least having a higher pick gives me some more hope as opposed to picking 9th or 10th in such a dismal year.

Forgive me for sounding like a typical meathead jets fan but I just get frustrated when I know this guy will most likely not be the answer. Still preferable to having that dickhead Fitzpatrick out there though

What pick can't we get if we really want it this year? What team picking ahead of us is going to be in love with any of the players at the top of draft?

If we're willing to pay the price, we can get the #1 pick. There's no player outside of MAYBE Garrettt that we can't get if we want them.

If Luck was at the top of the draft, you'd maybe have a point, but there is no player like that. We'll be fine picking at 4-7 and hopefully have a quarterback we're confident going into camp with to compete for a starting spot vs. Hack or maybe a young veteran like Glennon.

My point is that Petty looked a lot better than McElroy, Clemens, Simms or Bollinger ever did and the franchise is taking steps to develop this player. I don't think the comparison is warranted at all for that reason, and he's actually flinging the ball down field unlike the four mentioned who were check-down machines.

look at the cowboys. invested multiple first round picks on the offensive line. got lucky with a 4th round qb. ran the offense with an ufa qb, tony romo.
point is you can eventually be successful with a petty or hackenberg, if you develop them and have a much better o line than we have now.
we spend too many first round picks on defense. the left tackle and center positions are just as , if not more important.
they factor on every play. look at the pats, who don't often spend much 1st round picks on their d. a lot of times, they actually trade down out of the 1st round. get more picks, spend less money. seems to work for the last 15 years, unlike us with the free agent/short term shortcut fix.

You are so right... The colts are a friggen embarrassment. They have had what 20 years of elite qb play and won one superbowl. They are not a well run franchise. They are lucky. Its sad. Even we could win a sb or two or three with manning and luck at the helm for 20 years.

    Clemens was 23/42 (54.7%) for 226 (9.8 yards/completion), 1 touchdown, 48 yards rushing vs. the 'Skins.

    Petty was 23/35 (65.7%) for 257 (11.2 yards/completion), 1 INT, 19 yards rushing vs. the '9ers.

Comparable, no? I do remember Clemens playing better than that stat line indicated. He was pretty terrible that whole year though outside of that awesome flea flicker to start the game in the win over Pittsburgh. Was at that game with my Steelers fan friend. That was sweet.

So how does that work? Do a handful of players individually decide they're willing to sacrifice their own careers by mailing it in for a few weeks or do a bunch of them get together and decide they'll do it for the long term good of the team? Does the coaching staff take a dozen guys aside and privately tell them to slow down for December? Maybe the GM texts the offensive and defensive captains and tells them each to get the word out?

You sound so sure of yourself this must have been going on for decades. Strange how no disgruntled former player has never reported any of this, isn't it?

You hit the nail on the head. Players may not play to the best of their abilities for a variety of reasons when the season is essentially over (laziness, bad attitude, injuries, etc.). However, purposely playing bad for a better draft choice (when you could lose your job or your starting position next year) just doesn't make sense.

Looking at the Jets, how many players can actually say that they are 100% guaranteed starters for the Jets next year? My guess would be a maximum of 8 - and that is really stretching it. Many of the rest are playing for their jobs next year. Why would these type of players tank - especially when a higher (and presumably better) draft choice may be drafted at their position?

I can't answer your initial question because I can't read the minds of the GMs of any of the 32 teams in the NFL or foresee the future. At this point, I would think that you're correct this season that Garrett is probably the only player that a team wouldn't be willing to trade their pick away, but a player could shoot up the draft boards between now and the draft. If Watson lights it up in the playoffs and Clemson wins the national championship, he could be another player that would shoot up to the top of the draft and neither of the first two teams would be willing to trade their pick away.

My comments weren't based on just this season, however. I was speaking in more general terms. In other seasons, the Jets have missed out on players they coveted because they could find a trading partner to move up or the cost was too prohibitive, and the player they wanted went earlier than their pick.

With regards to this season, I have already pointed out a couple of players the Jets could miss out on, however. Let's say the Jets covet Fournette but wind up picking 7th. Fournette could easily go, and probably should go in the top 5. Could the Jets trade up to get him? Perhaps, but for a team with all the holes that we have and that has had a history of missing on draft picks and wasting draft picks trading up to get a player they fell in love with, that's the last thing that Mac can afford to do. We have such poor depth and so little talent at many positions because of all those wasted draft picks. The last thing Mac should do in this draft is trade up. The Jets have to be able to address needs and get great players without having to burn picks moving up. Trading up is something that should be very seldom, and should usually be followed within a year or two by trading down to recoup the pick or picks one burned to move up in the prior draft.

Similarly, if the Jets wanted to trade down, acquire an extra pick or two, and then take Ramczyk or Dalvin Cook, they'd have to find a trade partner. In this draft, aside from Garrett, maybe Watson and/or Fournette, there aren't a lot of players that a team would trade up for. If they're picking at #6 or #7 there's little chance that Garrett or Fournette will still be there, and maybe not even Watson, so in all likelihood, they'll have no team seeking to trade with them to move up and take a player they covet. The difference in even one slot in the draft can make a HUGE difference.

Exactly. It doesn't make any sense for a player not to play their hardest outside of jags of human beings like Revis and Mo who already cashed in. They're playing for their starting positions and may not even be on the team so why would they care where the team picks?

The heck with the draft for now. This industry that tries to make the NFL Draft the biggest event of the year is just silly. The player that has had the most impact in the NFL this year is Prescott. I never heard his name. Petty has the tools and the maybe he can be an above average QB. None of us know so pretending we do is nonsense. Let him play and maybe we have something down the road. He has the size, the arm and is athletic enough. He seems like a smart kid who loves football and will do the work required to learn how to read defenses. I don't understand why any Jet fan is not enthusiastic to give him the opportunity.
