All niceties, but can he play against 1st string top notch NFL players ?? More importantly where does he fit on our squad and at who's expense. No I'm not blind to the feel good story and media hype but all those intangibles bring nothing to the team if he ends up on the roster and is nothing more than a bench warmer.
While I would agree with you the position was down to him or Caulcrik (sp) they aren't cutting any DL or OL depth for him to be on the roster. (They may carry one less WR though) The other key to remember is that Greene has already been dinged up in the preseason and I believe he had some durability issues in college outside of his senior year when it all clicked. I think the philosophy Ryan has is that we'll keep the 53 best players regardless of what position they play. I wouldn't be surprised to see Brad Smith find his way to a cut....
Oh come on that's bullshit!!! If all 53 players on the final roster could beat the shit out of the 1st stringers: A) We'd get a shitload of draft picks in exchange for them B) We'd win the Superbowl EVERY roster in the NFL has a bunch of guys who make the team A) Because they are physical freaks but need to work on technique (or viceversa) even though they are not NFL ready straight away. B) Because they give 150% effort all the times and that drives other players to do the same (even the ones with more talent). And also because the coaching staff believes they have enough talent to become NFL capable players if they work so hard. C) Because they can contribute on ST. Out of these 3 reasons if the guy plays in a position where depth is lacking all the better. Reason A: Woodhead is blazing fast (numbers to back it up), has good hands (Rex's word), and plays tough (Rex's opinion). Reason B: Someone before me explained well what team-mates and the coaching staff think of him so enough said. Reason C: He can contribute in the return game if needed and on ST in general. Carrying 4 RB in a power running offense isn't a bad thing. I agree it's not the first position in which depth is needed but certainly it's not the least useful. Plus, up to now, Greene seems pretty fragile and TJ is 31. I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE FEEL GOOD STORY!!! The decision to keep him makes a lot of sense from a football perspective too... Of course this is only my opinion and anyone can think whatever he wants... but I don't think it's right to analyze the Woodhead situation on the fact that it's a feel good story... ok, it is... but strictly from a football perspective it makes sense too.
Agree with mambo^^^. Remember only 45 suit up, so you may keep some on the 53 because they would be lost if placed on the practice squad. Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but DW also could be really valuable on the Scout team playing the role of the other team's 3rd down scatback or even a Wes Welker type slot guy.
I don't know how many people can refute what you just said, the only argument against it is we could keep depth at another position, but personally i prefer to keep the best 53.
Reasons A, B & C all sound like intangibles to me. Yes he's fast has a big heart, players & coaches like him and he may be able to help with returns or on special teams. The problem is , he has no role . If we were really worried about RB depth , I 'd be signing someone who gets/got cut today like Dominic Rhodes or Darius Walker. He's not a top option on KR(Leon/Allison) or PR( Leonard/Leon) , he's not a candidate for a gunner we have those already with Smith/Wright and certainly won't take carries away from Leon . So where does he fit - I disagree that it makes sense from a football perspective. Its easy to root for the underdog, if Leon wasn't here I'd be pulling for him as well, but given our current team and offensive philosophy - its just makes no sense.
Agreed, he does nothing better than anyone else that is already a lock for the team. Which means he shouldnt be on the team.
Please provide a link when you post from a blog (or any other link). Don't steal material, even if you do say his name in the title.
That's why Ryan coaches the team Woodhead OFFICIALLY makes the team http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/05/solid-woodhead-makes-it-with-jets/ "Danny Woodhead, who set a Jets preseason record Thursday night with 158 rushing yards, has made the club according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star Ledger. "
In fact, I can't find a link to this article anywhere. I see blogs linking to the article, but the original link is gone.
Congrats to Woodhead on making the team. Coach Ryan has made his decision and I think its a smart one. We can disagree all we like but we have our team and this who we are going into battle with. Time to come together and get ready for Houston.
You misunderstood me. I'm not arguing that he fails to make the 55 man roster. I'm arguing that if he makes the 55 man, he'll also make the 53. You said he'd make the 55, but perhaps not the 53. The extra 2 roster spots will go to a DE and a LB, who will then be cut once Ellis and Pace return, respectively. It doesn't make sense to keep Woodhead for 4 weeks, and nobody is going to trade in the first 4 weeks of the season for an unproven undersized preseason wonder. That idea is ludicrous.
More reported cuts. Among the players the Jets have waived to get down to the 53-man limit are tight end Kareem Brown, linebacker Kenwin Cummings, guard Stanley Daniels and wide receiver Britt Davis, according to two people with knowledge of the moves who requested anonymity. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/09/ny_jets_cut_eight_players_exru.html
My guess is they may expect some injuries at the RB position which would explain why they'd keep 4 RB's. My bet is they know that Green has some durability issues.
