We get fooled by a name cause he was a household name back in the day... there must be a reason everyone passes on em
i disagree - to me, the lure of putting the team in a good position to win 10-11 games THIS year would have been worth it. i dont think we are currently rigged for a 10 win campaign. i am hopeful for 8 but dont have high hopes to match last seasons record.
The bold is my fundamental position. Not sure why every Idzik apologist is up in arms about it. I've acknowledge the team is better but the team would have been better if he went the route of focusing heavily on the CB/WR as well. Whether or not the path he chose it's better long term is up for debate.
I'm sure you watched the preseason games. you didn't see any problem? this one has nothing to do with the media (although they do relentlessly pound any weakness)
Thanks. I understand your concern about the CB position. Do I wish things were different or better? Definitely, but if Patterson hadn't wigged out, the Jets would have had a second year starter on one side and a quality 9-year vet on the other. I don't like Wilson at all and will be glad when he's gone, but I think he's rated as an above-average slot corner. In fact, I think he's rated pretty highly. I too would rather be in a position of maximum flexibility and maximizing the talents of the DL, but that can still happen, just probably not this season. Idzik could draft a CB in next year's draft, sign a FA CB or McDougle could get healthy and prove to be a topnotch starting CB. Would you be happy if Idzik had addressed the CB position in a different, "better" (whatever that means) way, but as a result, didn't address the WR or S positions? Would you have been complaining that the offense needed playmakers and that Geno needed weapons? Is it possible that you have been too influenced by Rex and his view of the importance of the CB position? Few teams have two solid starters at CB, much less solid, quality depth. Most have those "non-established" types or journeymen as depth. We were spoiled for a couple of years with Revis and Cro and came to expect that, but it isn't necessary in order for the Jets to be a winning, competitive team, or even a team that wins a SB. Having a top 10 D certainly helps, but it isn't necessary for winning a SB. Balance is key. There is more than one way to win. Under Rex and Tanny there was only one way, and it hasn't worked. I just think we're all going to have to sit back, be patient and wait and see if Idzik's approach works. In the short term, there will be some struggles. No one realistically thought that Idzik could clean up the mess that Tanny left and fill all the holes in two years. The Jets had a TON of holes and problems when Tanny left. It's probably going to take another year or two for all those holes and problems to be addressed in a significant fashion. Someone threw the issue of 12 draft picks in, well most of those were lower round picks, and those players are more iffy, and usually take longer to develop, if they even ever do. Who would you have signed at CB and for how much or who would you have drafted? As a result, which positions would you have ignored/failed to address or which players would you have drafted to better help the team?
Nonsense. The Jets cut Cromartie and then did try and get a CB in FA. Only problem is the one they ended up with was one who had played 8 games in the last three years, and showed up not only again injured but with character issues. FO Homers can believe all they want that the Jets' off season went according to some master plan, or that the prior history of injuries for McDougle, Patterson and Milliner mean nothing in assessing FO performance. Or both. But that is all by way of justification after the fact. There are stories out there about how the Giants got DRC when the Jets wanted him, too, but the Jets did not move to head that off. As for Tanny, this is revisionist history to say that he focused too much on FA and that was his downfall. His real downfall was in part being too aggressive in the draft. But even there we saw him pick up Revis by that approach, the best player possibly in Jet history. But his real downfall was moves like the Sanchez contract extension and his role in the Tebow mess. The point is that this mantra about slow building has three problems. One is that Idzik himself has been active in FA, imo to his credit. Just not active enough. The second is there is nothing about being less active in FA that means you will be successful in the draft. The third as you yourself allude to is the jury is out on Idzik's ability to judge players. Ftr I am not a hater when it comes to him. I just don't understand those who think he's already established a track record of success with the Jets.
Again, the problem with Tanny and cap space was not that he signed FA's. The problem was that too much of it went down the toilet with the Sanchez extension, paying big money for a lousy player. Your mention of every position with most expensive is hyperbole. The concern was the Jets having a gaping hole at Cb, why was not more done with the huge amount of cap space available? No one is talking about signing say any FA defensive lineman who might have been available.
I disagree that it was a consensus. I saw many different opinions. Some felt the most glaring needs were at WR and TE. Others thought they were at QB and TE. Others thought it was S and WR. Others thought it OG and S. Still others thought CB and WR or CB and TE, or some other combination of those positions. It's easy to criticize and throw out generalities. I've yet to see your specific plan of who you would have signed, for how much and who you would have drafted, i.e, your plan for addressing our needs and building the team.
I get it that there are bunch of posters on this site so it's hard to keep track of people's positions. I try my best to so I'd appreciate others do the same, especially if you are responding to one of my posts directly. I'm not in the big name crowd never been. http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/fas-the-jets-should-consider.79824/page-3#post-2910443 2014 Jets Free Agency Tracker FAs the Jets Should Consider Note Corey Graham signed a four-year, $16 million contract.
Having had my own problems with Ryan, I to some extent can sympathize with those here who not only do not like him but who take issue with his philosophy on D. For myself I think Rex's problems have been more on managing the O, and to some extent seeming to lose control of the locker room during the 12 season. His input on roster moves is also something I have a hard time weighting, since I don't know how much say he has really had there. But to diss his preference for a D based on having strong play at Cb is rather disingenuous. Ryan has a record of success with such a philosophy, and more to the point is the HC on this team. Building a roster that is more or less the opposite of the one preferred by your HC is a curious choice for a GM to make. My only caveat there is I dont think Idzik set out to have the kind of off season he's had regarding the Cb position, making it even harder to accept the FO homers here who think it all went according to plan.
Ugh to they bold. It comes across like Idzik is your dad or something. I can't express that I am disappointed with Idzik's approach this offseason in the same manner many here praise every move he makes without having to go into specifics on what I would have done differently? I did a couple offseason mocks; you are welcome to dig them up if you are that curious. Idzik went a different route. I can still express my displeasure and/or concern as a fan, then be happy if proven wrong.
I'm curious how you would have addressed the need at CB. Looking at your list, here are my thoughts: Revis - no way Woody would have or should have ever signed off on this. Revis is a headache and a selfish me-first and only player. Grimes - a very good CB but probably a one- or two-year rental tops. Am not sure he would have signed with the Jets. Davis - I think was Idzik's choice, but the Colts way overpaid and Idzik wasn't willing to destroy the team salary structure he has in mind and didn't think Davis was anywhere near worth what the Colts paid Shields - I'm not sure who you're referring to Captain Munnerlyn - is pretty bad. I live in NC and saw him play on an almost weekly basis and he was beaten like a drum and made lots of bonehead plays. No thanks. Browner - was gonna be suspended for a few games wasn't he, was too expensive, a head case, and not the type of player that Idzik is looking to bring to the team DRC - an underachiever who isn't even committed to the game, and he was way overpaid by the Giants Cro - was awful last year, has poor fundamentals, is soft, and we don't know what happened behind the scenes between Cro and the team Verner - a very good zone CB. The problem is Rex doesn't like or play the zone very much and Verner is not a good press CB. Talib - a very talented but troubled player. A head case and headache that I wanted no part of and I don't think Idzik would have ever considered him. Again character issues are the problem as well as the contract Talib was bound to get. Rodgers - I'm not sure who this is, but if it's the player I think it is, isn't he older, somewhat injury-prone and a bit of a head case? Thurmond - seemed to be very solid for the Seahawks, but is he just another guy that seemed better because of the talent around him? There have been several FA CBs who cashed in on their teams winning a SB who were as a result, over paid, and then bombed with their new team
Fair enough. I just disagree. It might have been a positive, steadying influence on the D, but could very easily have caused problems over the next couple of years in re-signing current core Jets players. If you paid a premium to that CB, it wouldn't have been a small dent. Who do you see as the right veteran corner that you would have signed?
I do find it funny that posters had no problems with Shields is Sam Shields of the Packers. How about a guy like Corey Graham? Why would he not have been a good fit?
If you read my different responses in this thread, there's no way you can say I come across as Idzik's dad. I say the areas where I have concerns and things I would have done differently or draft picks I didn't like/want. But just as you say I came across as an Idzik defender (dad), you come across as naive or too simplistic, lazy, and a bit of a whiner and/or complainer. Lots of posters on Jets boards complain about moves the GM or CS make or don't make, but moves aren't made in a vacuum. For every move that one makes, there's another move that one wouldn't have been able to make, and it changes things. Of course you can express your dissatisfaction or complain, it just comes across as lame when you don't back it up with how you would have done things differently/better. It's also lame to suggest that someone have to spend the time searching to find your mock drafts or whatever. How does that further discussion? I'm not trying to criticize you or put you down. I sincerely am interested in how you would have done things differently as my mind isn't made up on Idzik. As I've stated before, he wasn't the guy I wanted as the Jets GM, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves he doesn't deserve it. We're discussing this now, not 6 months ago or 3 months ago. If you don't want to discuss this further and just want to complain, fine, but I hoped for more.
I would have loved Sam Shields. I didn't catch who he was talking about. I had never heard of Corey Graham until you mentioned him, so know nothing about him. Thank you for mentioning his name. I don't follow every team in the NFL. I will do some research on him.
IMO that's "going all in" on this season without regard to future seasons and how it would affect the team going down the road. That is not a wise or sustainable approach imo.
Bundling picks is what Tanny did and would have been stupid imo, especially with all the holes/needs the team has and the shoddy depth. If the Jets are ever going to win anything they need to have a GM who can find talent in the lower rounds and quit that stupid trading up every year.
Sam Shields would have been a big and expensive name. He signed a four-year, $39 million contract with a $12.5 million signing bonus. Geno knows Graham well as he picked him off twice last year when we played Baltimore. Geno and Jets fans will know him even better this season as he signed with Buffalo.
Corey Graham is being paid like a starter. I don't think Idzik would throw 4yrs / 20M at a nickel and dime CB. Graham doesn't even play on the outside the majority of the time (or at least that's my assessment of him per research). You can find these guys cheaper via the draft - which is what Idzik tried to do with McDougle. We wouldn't be having this convo if he were healthy IMO.
