    Excellent post. Thanks.

For whatever its worth, Phil Sims believes that Cutler has the most potential out of any of the QBs in this year's draft.

Why would we pick Cutler, not even the best QB in the draft, with the 4th pick, when next year, after end up 3-13 and we've jettison all our aged Vets and players that don't belong and begin to emerge from cap hell we're in prime position to pick THE BEST QB in the draft. Next year, Brady Quinn will be the pick of the Jets, so why not build the O-line and running game this year, and next year sign the best FA WR we can get, have a full year of continuity running the ball, and let him step in and just manage the game, or learn from the starter, much like a Kitna type.

This year I'm a fan of a if we stay in the top 10 picking a RB..

    White or Williams

With the next 3 picks (One will be a late first rounder for Abe), two O-Lineman and a fat bastard of a NT in no particular order... (we should end up with a 3rd rounder for McKenzie)

    End of the first day

With the next 2 picks, a WR and DE

POTENTIAL is a big word with a bunch of meanings. POTENTIAL meaning big arm and athletic ability comes with many caveats. Production is often overlooked if the potential is off the charts, and that's a mistake that lands you, as one of my friends noted, Michael Vick who can't read a defense and operate a complex pro offense.

Cutler has a big arm, and he won at a program that doesn't typically win. That is a credit to his makeup and his grit. He does not have elite accuracy and his numbers are not above and beyond.

Leinart comes from a big program. The manner of hype and the LA party scene that he's a major part of have already given him a taste of the pro life. He is accurate and he makes good decisions. He's in a pro offense and has had top flight coaching. His arm isn't fantastic, but it's not terrible, and he has great placement on his deep balls. If I'm a scout, and I have to choose between the two, I'm taking Leinart.

I think the real discussion should be "Cutler or Young?" Both of these guys have far too many questions for me to put them in the same class as Matt Leinart.

Outstanding post, Kurt. We think alike on this. Cutler threw 21 TDs and only 9 INTs last year in the tough SEC. Vandy finished 5-6 because they were outmatched in that conference, but Cutler was still voted SEC "Offensive Player of the Year." Why? Because he's a real competitor. We need this kid or someone like him, the sooner the better.

Let's all stop f*cking around here and admit we'd be nuts NOT to take Cutler if available, okay? If you all want to trade down 3-4 spots to get him, fine, so be it. But keep in mind that we're going to (A) need someone who wants to do this trade for a small number of slots and (B) we'll be taking a gamble we've traded down one-too-many spots. When the Jets go to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis later this week they'll be getting a second look at Cutler and don't forget, Bradway had a lengthy dinner with Cutler several weeks ago. What does that all tell you?

Take Cutler, then go after your O-line. Taking Ferguson at #4 in a draft this rich with O-line is a waste of a draft pick. 2006 is a rebuild year anyway. Taking a QB like Cutler now gives him a chance to learn the ropes until we start him in '07.

If we are going to draft a QB just to have him sit, why draft him. We need a QB in the worst way, but this is not the year to get him unless you plan on seeing him on the IR, and chalk it up to another baffle by the organization.

I'd like to see us do the following:

    1) Trade down out of the 4 pick and get Lendale White or Williams (White is my choice)

    2) Trade Abe for a late 1st rounder early second rounder and with that pick take an OT

    3) With our second round pick take a NT or a OG / C.

    4) With our 3rd round pick take a NT or OG / C depending on what we took with our second rounder

    5) With our 3rd round compensatory pick (for McKenzie) we draft a DE or Olineman, depending upon what the board lets slide etc etc. At this spot, according to our draft plan i'd be looking at OT that can slide down into a guard spot, giving us some flexability, or a Center if we had not gotten one by this time of the draft.

So, once the first day of the draft is over, we would have addressed the follwing positions

    RB - new starter
    RT - new starter
NT - new starter / rotation with Pouha
G - One new starter min.
    G/C
    G/T/C

We then look forward to day 2, where we have again 4 picks in the high end of the second day. Our 4th rounder, Kansas Cities 4th rounder, a compensatory pick for Lamont Jordan, and our 5th rounder.

Then the 6th and 7th rounder and a Compensatory 7th rounder for Ferg and the 7th rounder we recieved for McGraw

We can come out in really good shape, and hopefully jettison the old men on the Oline, deal with our cap issues this year and go into next year with a clear need at QB, and from that point on be able to draft the BPA.

Here's my take on this whole deal. I want to trade down more than anything, and hopefully take Cutler, but if we miss out on him, that's okay, Croyle's a good option in round 2 or 3. He's not in Cutler's class, but we can get an RB and some extra OL and DT and CB help in those rounds.

As XJets said, Leinart is clearly better than Young and Cutler. I don't even see how that's debatable.
If the question is Cutler vs D'Brickashaw, give me the QB. I know LT is vital to success, but QB is still the most important position. You build your team around a QB more often than not, and QBs usually take the most time to develop, so you normally draft them to rebuild the offense. Teams know the importance of QBs, that's why they're usually not drafted in round 2. Teams want their first rounders to be a quarterback because that's where most of the franchise QBs are. I know someone will bring up someone like Tom Brady, and I'll bring up Chuck Clements, Kliff Kingsbury, Brooks Bollinger, Giovanni Carmazzi, etc. Cutler has a cannon arm, and while I think arm strength is overrated, this kid has the moxie, the toughness, the mobility, and the leadership skills mixed with the huge arm, so he has the potential to be a star. I like Croyle a lot, though, but he's got so many injury concerns, I don't know if you can trust him starting everyday, and he's not a prospect at Cutler's level.

Now, Cutler has some big questions with him, which is part of the reason I want to trade down a little before I take him. If D'Brickashaw were 6'8", 325 and had the agility that he has, I'd take him over Cutler or Young. But the guy is undersized for a DT. I'm sorry, but you don't take an undersized offensive lineman 4th overall in one of the most talented drafts in NFL history. That makes no sense, especially when you have no QB and no RB.

One last thought on D'Brick vs Cutler: would you rather have Tom Ashworth or Kerry Collins? If you said Ashworth, then that's more reason to take Cutler.

Also, some people say that we're going to be horrible next year, and we can just take Brady Quinn. That's the most defeatist attitude I've ever heard. Even if Quinn stays healthy and has another big year, he's still not a sure thing. Not to mention, if he does that, he'll be the #1 overall pick. So basically you're planning on tanking next year to take Quinn. If you win an extra game or two, your rebuilding plan fails. Give me a break. Now, if there were 5 or 6 guys like Quinn out there, then maybe I could see the thinking a little bit. But there's only one Brady Quinn.

JFM... I think Quinn is more of a sure thing than any of the QB's in this draft. And it's not that we plan on tanking this year, I'd like to be as competitive as possible, but do you honestly think we'll be any better than 5 wins next year. If you do, can I have some of what you got. We are blowing up the ENTIRE offense, installing yet another offensive system, and most likely a newer version of our old defensive system. The only continuity is special teams. We're going to have at least 20 new faces on this team, we'll be extremely young, and won't be able to sign any impact FA's this year thanx to the cap situation we are in. How do you plan on being competitive. How does winning an extra game or to make it fail? If the plan is dead set on Quinn, you trade up... if you have to. If not, there will be other QB's that come out that will be good. Palmer from UTEP is an intreaguing choice, and there will be others. Who heard of Cutler before this year.... that's right, like 5 people because there's always someone that will say I did. I jjust think, and feel it in my gut that next years QB class will be better than this ones... wait till next year rather than reach for a guy this year... build everything else.

Excellent point... my thoughts exactly. Thunderbird's been trying to pound that home for over a month now, too. To me, a QB as a first pick is a no-brainer.

Some people may not like old threads bumped...But I didn't feel the need to start another thread on this when I could just go in and look for it...

Friends of mine and people here are liking Cutler alot. I was never too fond of him at #4 considering he was starting out as a 2nd rounder, then late 1st, now catapult into Top 10 possibly Top 5 despite having a below-average senior bowl.

So, I want to be convinced that Cutler would be a good pick at #4, not saying he HAS to be the pick, just why would he be a good pick? Because I have been pro-Leinart from the start, wanting to trade up for him and him only, but I am trying to get convinced that Cutler would be just as or close as good an option as Leinart.
