Hawk is the BPA at #4 no doubt i would love to see him next vilma. just imagine all that speed in our lb corp. if he was the pick i will be happy. but i just dont see us spending another 1st on defene at least not this year.
That would be a bad pick in my opinion. He is a good player, but we already have some young talent at LB. Mark Brown, Jonathan Vilma and Eric Barton to name a few. I would much rather start at the bottom and draft a QB and build a foundation with him. At this point I think we would be crazy to draft a LB with our offense needing a guy to build around so badly.
Ok? Your point? Just because he is a defensive minded coach doesn't mean he is going to draft defense with every pick. There have been rumors that Mangini wants to take Cutler at 4...
Then I guess I shouldn't discuss the draft even on a leisure level. Because I don't cut him all the slack in the world simply because Vanderbilt sucks? Rugers sucks too, should the Jets draft their quarterback early too? Neither do the Jets. for the most part, neither do the Jets. And again, neither do the Jets. If his problem is the lack of talent around him (even though he played so poorly in the senior bowl WITH talent around him), what is he going to do in the NFL when he still lacks the talent around him? I'd rather have no identity this year than have the one the Houston Texans do. If the Jets don't invest heavily in the OL, do start a rookie QB and dump Mawae, Kendall and Fabini, that certainly looks like what the Jets will be heading to. I don't see how having a great offensive line won't make 1. Bollinger (or any other QB the Jets acquire) look much better. 2. time for the receivers get open. 3. Former league leading rusher Curtis Martin look like his old self. But hey, I don't think quarterbacks should be bumped into the top five just because they played on bad teams, so what do I know?
YES YES YES! there is no need to take a fat o-linemen with the 4th pick, when there is sooo many impact players in this draft.
couple thing i would like to point out from your sig when seattle took walter jones he was the 2nd 1st rd pick that year.when they took hutchinson he # 17 in a oline heavy draft.he also was the there 2nd 1st rd pick that year. Chris spencer was took when they really didnt have many needs in the late 1st round. (#26) marvel smith was a 2nd rounder, fenaca was a Late 1st (#26) and simmons another late 1st rounder (#30) again if it was a case if we had 2 1st roud picks or was late in the 1st rd i wouldnt care. but to use a the #4th pick on a OT when our offense doesnt have any skill players worthy of talk is a joke
skilled offensive players well.............. moss (oh thats right hes in washington) jordan ( oh thats right hes in oakland)
Crickett made good points, in a lot of ways we are the Vanderbilt of the NFL right now, and if he wasn't that great there, why should we pay #4 pick money for the guy that could go through the same problems here as well. Because it feels like if it was ANY of the best available QB left in the draft you would be all over them anyway
because in the ncaa if ur program is not winning or dont have a big name school. ur not getting good recruits ur gonna get mostly player who are not even thinking nfl after there college career is over. in the nfl this is a business we have a big market team guys want to play here as long as we can pay them. this oline will be built back up. the question is how will they do it? FA,Draft,Trade . maybe even both FA and draft
But with the cap right now as well as our talent compared to the other teams in our league, the comparison is valid, while there is a chance that this rebuild whatever Mangini/Tannenbaum is visioning could work, there is just as good of a chance that this could flop badly.
here is my take on our whole round one situation this year. i say take cutler or young whoever is available most likely cutler. im well aware our offensive line sucks. but the way i see it is there a lot more lineman with the tools to succeed in the nfl than there are qb's. and we are forgetting that the whole team isnt going to be fixed right away. this is going to take this off season and next off season at least until we can even think about being in contention. we are in position to draft a potential franchise quarterback right now so why not take that oppurtunity? why wait we dont know where we are going to be in the draft next year or what is going to be available when we pick. we know right now that no matter what a quarterback who has shown a lot of promise to nfl scouts is going to be available to us. and i know we all like to form our opinions on players and a lot of you have a bias to a player being hyped because of our own expirience with a high rising player in the draft. now we are in position to draft a quarterback and begin to build the o-line. the o-line is not going to be completly fixed this year and its going to be ugly next year we should all except that now. if we get 2-3 lineman in here this year we will be able to anchor the rest of that line next year when we will be well under the cap instead of well over it. basically the way i see it we should get the hardest positon to find a good starter out of the way first and that is quarterback. after that we have the rest of this offseason and next off season to fix everything else and than maybe we can hope to be a team competing for the playoffs or more. but its going to be at least two years before we can hope for that so why try to fix everything right away when that just isnt realistic.
With the right pieces in place any QB can succeed, I mean Orton a 4th round QB went 9-2 as a starter this year, and the year before Rothlisberger went 15-1 as a starter, while a QB is a very important part of the team, without the team in place for the QB, whatever skills he has won't mean much anyway.
i will also like to point out chicago built that Oline through FA for the most part. and the bears hae there franchise qb in rex so they also went qb over olineman at some point
And the fact that a 4th round QB had a better record than their franchise QB, makes my point even more.
orton did not go 9-1 the bears defense went 9-1 and orton didnt screw it up. but where was he in the playoffs? on the bench because the man the bears believe is their franchise qb was playing. once again i agree the jets need a lot of work i just think its easier to find players to come in and be productive at any other postion besides qb. and i think it is better to build around a qb instead of building a team and trying to fit a qb into it.
lol i feel you. but u have to be honest grossman is a way better qb than orton. you could see that easily once grossman got back into the lineup. did it equal more wins? no but orton play wasnt exactly winning games it was the great defense
