I totally understand where you're coming from with regards to "athlete" first QBs. That said, I think Newton is different. He's cocky, maybe even arrogant at times, but can also be humble, and has a pretty level head on his shoulders. If he didn't, there's no way he could have dealt with all the pressure he had this year with the controversy with his dad and being #1 and everyone taking shots at them. Think of the big hole Auburn was in vs U of Alabama and he cooly and calmly brought them back. I think he's gonna do just fine in the NFL. Based on what I've read/heard about him, he has a great work ethic and is a great kid, high character. He may not be a rocket scientist, but he's no Vince Young in the intelligence dept.
I still mean Vince Young in terms of not doing something right and having it fall apart in your face. I never compared VY and Newton in terms of ability or intelligence. Just career path. I guess I should just say I think he busts in the NFL.
Did VY have to leave his first school to play out in the boonies at some random JuCo in Texas only to come back and go undefeated without any real major college experience? I must have missed that part of his 30 for 30.
But did VY play his way off the Titans. I don't see Newton becoming a star in this league. I don't like this entire QB class either.
Vince Young is literally crazy. He had everything and didn't give a god damn about it. Cam Newton wants to win. Vince Young could care less about the outcome of a game. Newton has a stronger arm and a stronger mind.
And why did he play his way off the Titans? He had a terrible attitude and shit wasn't going his way so he folded. He never had people telling him he wasn't going to make it, never had to struggle to be a great player. VY could bounce back now, sure, but Cam already had to undergo a lot more than Young had with a lot more at stack at a much earlier age. You don't like the QB class, that's fine, but there is no comparison between those two players.
I highly doubt Cam Newton will threaten to commit suicide just because people aren't paying attention to him anymore. Young is a child playing a man's game. Newton proved to the entire nation that he's a man when he pushed all of the bullshit aside and won a championship.
No offense, but this post is an example of why us "draft geeks" act like elitist assholes all the time.
And I'm one of the rare few that completely understand that and understand why. I just look at the kid and hear him and see what system he comes out of and what type of QB he is and I just hate how every single time QBs like this are thought of highly they disappoint in the long run, no matter how different Newton seems to be.
I'm with ya. I'd love to see guys like Newton succeed because it's fun and exciting to witness but all that talent won't translate into franchise QB. Cam in college: look downfield... Ok no ones open, start running around... Look downfield again, no ones open shit.. time to run. He can learn to go through progressions and read defenses but I have my doubts.
While I certainly don't see him as a franchise QB, I think that Andy Dalton can be a very good backup at the very least, and possibly develop into a solid starter. Why do you dislike him so much?
I have gone on record saying I like Andy Dalton, so maybe not every QB in this class. But it is an undeniably poor QB class. Newton just doesn't have what I've seen from the other QBs that I've fallen in love with.
"I underestimating the timing aspect of playing quarterback...." someone seriously wants this kid to be their nfl quarterback??? Not only is he retarded to not realize how much timing goes into playing quarterback WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD HE SAY THIS IN AN INTERVIEW!!!!! I really do not think this kid has the mental capacity to be a game manager in the NFL. The comparison to Tim Tebow is retarded in the sense that their mechanics are totally different but when Tebow played in college it was the same one wr read then run aspect and if anyone is to draw a comparison thats where I think it would make sense.
