Wanna make sure I understand it right... So the idea is to keep play between the numbers. On the weak side it's done by pass rush and on the other by edge setter. The effect is that if offense wants to run, ideally, the RB won't be able to get outside because there is a pass rusher coming from one side, and Pace on the other, making him stay inside. Is this correct?
Yeah, the idea is to force the ball carrier to the most crowded part of the field to maximize chances of a tackle for no gain or loss. Obviously there are a number of teams whose DL aren't a huge strength and may try to funnel the ball carrier to a safety/OLB combo on the perimeter at times, but for the most part teams want the runner between the tackles. Setting the edge on the weak side of a 3-4 is done mainly by a RDE from the inside of the LT, freeing up the speed rusher, though a lot of times a ILB will help out with that.
I thought WOLB / SOLB was determined by the TE....the SOLB lines up over the TE usually if there is one.
