Assuming our top 2 QBs don't lock things up by this time next year, my expectation is that he'll be ready to compete for the starting job this time next year.
Petty was the best QB available with the 3rd overall pick in the 2015 draft. My expectations are high. The Geno/Fitz combo will keep him in 'development' for a year at least, but Petty could be named the BU next season and may get his day in the sunshine soon after. Macc didn't waste a 4th round pic on someone he could never see starting.
I expect him to be a preseason superstar for years to come and if the jets don't find a legit starting qb he will be discussed as a realistic option as the starter on here even if he's never given the opportunity.
Best case scenario is Geno or Fitz work out for a season or two while Petty gets his wits about him and learns what it means to be an NFL qb. He's got the physical ability. He's got the intangibles. He's got the smarts to learn. I expect him to be throwing dragons across the field in 2017.
Big strong kid. Lots of talent. Have no idea if he has what it takes to read a defense and play QB at the professional level. They should treat him exactly how I thought they should have treated Mariota. Let him sit, learn and adjust to the speed of the game. If he adjusts, and develops that ability, great. If not, we took a shot on a talented QB. No harm, no foul there.
Exactly. I'd go further, and draft a QB next year too. And the year after as well. And every year after that, until the cream rises to the top.
lolll... this is a fact. I guess this was more for the people that actually watched a lot of bryce petty .. im sure we all seen a college player and said "he's gonna be good in the NFL" or "he'll never be a good NFL Qb".
No expectations this year although I can't wait to see him in a preseason game and I'd like to see him get some mop-up duty late in the year. High ceiling (big arm, tough, smart, a leader, great deep ball) but low floor (spread QB, generally a one read offense, can he learn and NFL playbook?, can struggle with accuracy, back issue chronic?) . _
I liked Bryce at Baylor more than I liked Geno at WVU. He can make all the throws. Seems like a really smart kid. Has the size. Baylor's O just isn't close to an NFL O. So he has so much to learn BEFORE, he even steps on a field, then he has to learn while on the field, etc, so it will be a process.
We need to stress this. Having multiple talented QBs is a good problem to have. We don't want to be caught in a Pennington situation again. Plus, they become great trade bait.
Although he was picked in the fourth round, it's too much to expect Leon Washington or Kerry Rhodes type of contributions from a raw QB in year one. Therefore, realistically, it's my hope that Petty competes at a level higher than Heaps and pushes Fitz. If he's pushing Smith, I hope it's because he's a savant, and not because Smith is an idiot.
I like that were finally seasoning a QB up instead of just throwing him in the fire this time. even though I have high hopes for Eugene I really like petty also. With Geno being on such a short leash and petty being the QB the new regime picked I think it's safe to say petty is the future unless we Clemens him.
Don't count on it, especially if somebody gets hurt and the Jets have a history of getting their "presumed" starter hurt in preseason.
i really hope Petty shows the coaches enough to be starting by next season. I've seen enough of Geno; and we know that Fitzpatrick's ceiling isn't very high. Right now, Petty is our best option to upgrade the position.
I think the important factor is that the Jets even drafted another option. In the past, a QB was anointed and we rolled with that without any backup plans. It doesn't appear that the new regime will make the same mistake.
I've watched a good amount of Big 12 games the past few years and I'm not overly impressed by Petty. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him ever being more than a career backup as the best case scenario. Would have rather we kept our 3rd rounder and picked Grayson out of Colorado St.
Let's see if he can adjust his watch to account for Pacific time-zone change and we'll go from there...
Pass on Grayson too. All I remember is watching Petty's tape against WVU and throwing up a little inside, he was freaking AWFUL - but I like the kid, I hope it works out - I doubt it though.
I agree he has tons of things to learn. But his size, smarts, and accuracy throwing that cannon of his all make me optimistic. I didnt like Winston or Mariota and would have waited to get Bryce in the draft. I think it was a great choice and all of the things I have heard from OTAs thus far says he will be able to be developed. All we can do is hope, but I would really like to have someone intelligent behind center.
