Yes we will be playoff bound, but I don't simply want to settle for a game-managing QB. That's not how you build sustainable success. Eventually the defense will not be as strong and the Jets will need a long-term franchise QB. I don't want to settle for average and I think Bryce Petty can be so much more.

My point was that for Geno to turn into Alex Smith would be amazing for this team, and we should all say a prayer that it happens...

I would love to have a team that could win with a so-so QB that's happy to make $8-$10M/yr, leaving $15M/yr to deck out the rest of the team.

It's nice seeing more than one jersey in the stands.

Here is my two cents on this subject.
For the first time in a while we have a raw talented kid with potential AND BRAINS that has the golden opportunity to develop for a year or two with a well rounded and extremely capable set of receivers. Hopefully he will not be trusted into battle knowing full and well he is far from ready, expected to succeed without proper development, only to be subsequently trashed by both the fans and the media for his poor performance. Both Sanchez and Geno can support that premise. We also seem to have a front office and coaching staff that has an eye for talent and a more disciplined approach to developing a winning squad. For that I'm very pumped.
So far Geno has been excellent in camp ( first time in my opinion) so things are appearing to go in the right direction. We also have a back up QB that will give it 100% and don't just go thru the motions like Vick or be a gimmicky toy QB like Tebow. So it is fair to say it is not quite business as usual for the Jets, THERE MIGHT BE SOME BETTER IN STORE FOR US.
Time will tell and it is ok to be cautiously optimistic, because history after all is not in our favor. The fact that Petty was drafted in the fourth round is the least of my concerns, we apparently did not fair much better with any QB draft since Namath, and it was not a function of what round they were drafted but the keen eye or lack of, from the GM that drafted them.
The 2015 HOF is inducting two awesome GMs known for their eye for talent. They could see a player and say, he can play or not...period. Hope our GM can develop into someone close to them in talent. Everything else will then fall into place.

Agreed. He had to learn the spread offense at Baylor & ultimately adjusted to it and excelled in it. The draft "experts" refuse to give him any credit for that. No one said he'll walk in as a rookie, and start in a pro offense. I saw a lot of his games as well. Tough kid, no quitting, confident & strikes me as a hard-worker. I love this 4th round pick. The fact that our FO traded up only a single spot in the draft (as opposed to waiting a single spot) to get him speaks volumes.
