From Todays Daily News Jets in a bind over Robertson The way things are going, it looks like the Jets are going to be faced with a decision regarding Dewayne Robertson, the defensive tackle that nobody wants. Speaking at yesterday?s NFL Owners? meetings in Palm Beach, Fla., Broncos coach Mike Shanahan shot down reports that trade talks for Robertson have resumed. Surprisingly, Shanahan said Robertson, he of the bone-on-bone condition in his knee, flunked the Broncos? physical. Not exactly a revelation, but his candor couldn?t have made the Jets too happy. So what now? There?s still a chance that Robertson could be traded before the draft, but it?ll be hard to move him for a draft pick because teams know he probably will be cut in early June, when a $3 million roster bonus is due. Is there a chance he could stay with the Jets? Sure, but it?s unlikely. He?s due to make $9.8 million in total compensation for 2008, a ridiculous amount for a starter, much less a backup. Unless Robertson is willing to take a massive pay cut and become part of a rotation, he?s going to get whacked. But he also must be honest with himself. Because of his knee condition, how much is he really going to make on the open market? Of course, this probably goes deeper than money for Robertson, who hasn?t been participating in the offseason program. I?m told that he wants out, that he doesn?t see any future with the Jets. How in the name of MRI exams did the Jets take this guy with the fourth overall pick in 2003? By Rich Cimini on April 2, 2008 9:24 AM | Permalink | Comments (31)
God if they knew his knee was this bad, and still drafted him, you have got to be kidding me. then they signed him to a 7 year deal knowing he would only play 5 of it before his knee would give out? What bastards. Bradway would officially be the worst GM in Jets history, and nearly all of todays sports, but Isiah Thomas has that in the bag.
I remember Fat Teddy doing a dance when we drafted him, I think he MIGHT have had something to do with it.
Yeah, and that too giving up two first round picks. Damn, we could have had two decent starters than this bust... He should have told the Jets Im only gonna last a few yrs and that Im gonna suck big time so dont draft my lousy ass with the fourth.
People need to stop calling him a bust. He is not. He is a very good player. Not worth two first rounders but after that is done it is irrelevant. Was he a good player? Yes? Busts do not play, and get DPOTW awards or have a pro-bowl caliber season like he did the second season with us.
wtf r u talking about, the guy is a bust, any player that is the 4th overall pick has to have MORE production than this guy, when ur the 4th overall pick u should make at least one pro bowl, hes made none, whooo hooo he has 1 dpotw award, hes never dominated a game, never took over a game, never single handly won us a game, and never ever made a play that won a game, u need to remember HE WAS THE 4TH OVERALL PICK, not a 5th 4th 3th or 2nd rounder, throw in the fact we traded 2 1st rounders to get his ass, rank him up there w/b.thomas, k,brady, r.vick, e.c.t
I'm glad you maintain your green eyeshade and your accounting lamp. But the pick and contract were givens for this CS, and they have still decided to use this guy a lot their way. If they were so sussed by his financials this would mean that they didn't think DRob could do a job for them and they would have simply turned him over the FO for disposal. The fact that they haven't done that during their tenure indicates that they have a different opinion of DRob than you do. Such extreme and persistent condemnation is not only an indictment of the previous GM but also this one and this CS. Frankly, I don't agree that the CS feels this way about DRob. Don't be surprised by what happens.
These drob threads make me mental. Lets just cut him and try to forget we ever wasted money and draft picks on him. He wants out and who the hell wants him. The guy should be grateful he made the money he has
Hoobash, Patience, patience. Who know what we will get for DRob? We need to take the position that we would be happy to renegotiate and play DRob this year if need be. As the draft comes closer, there will be some itchy fingers.
During this whole discussion, the thing that amazes me is that he hasn't missed a start in all the years he's been here. That leads me to conclude that either his knee is not as bad as they (other teams) are reporting or that D-Rob has an UNREAL tolerance for pain. Now while I don't feel that he is worth the money we are paying him, I think that he could be a productive part of our Defense. Lets hang on to him a while longer and maybe some team will suddenly turn desperate for a defensive tackle and be willing to give us something decent for him. Lets face it. We're screwed no matter what we do, so lets at least try to get something for him. We still have some cap space to play with. There is no reason to go into panic mode yet.
i guess the only chance the Jets have of trading him is by winning an Academy Award by making the Broncos (or whoever else) think that we'll keep him.
It this point, if we don't draft a 3-4 DE we should keep him. Not exactly a ton of depth at the position, and he could do it for about half the downs. He would actually get better in a rotation.
