Pass interference was called against the Bills on a Hail Mary against the Patriots in 1998. On the next play Drew Bledsoe completed a 1-yard TD pass to Ben Coates on an untimed down. The touchdown gave the Patriots a 23-21 lead. The Bills walked off the field, Adam Vinatieri ran the ball into the end zone for two points on an 11-against-0 play, and the Patriots won 25-21. I remember someone losing our office football pool due to that 2-point conversion.
PI is a hard rule to get right I think. Maybe they can do it like they used to do the facemask in 2 tiers: - Pass Interference 1 - 10 or 15 yd penalty automatic first down - Pass Interference Severe - Spot foul
Bear WM sks others for mutual interbarrel xchange please find in lot 21 after inevitable Orange Crushing... I have big cumfunnel, bring friends.
I don't think they would do that. Recent changes (Facemask change, forceout) suggest that they are trying to keep all judgement out of calls. They want the same calls to be made by everyone, with no opinion on things like the severity of a PI. Opinionated calls lead to more arguments.
Both teams came into the game with 1-8 records, but it was an exciting game. The Lions won 38-37 by throwing a touchdown pass on an untimed down at the very end of the game. Matt Stafford had thrown four touchdown passes, but had to come out of the game after getting injured on what seemed to be the final play of the game. Well, pass interference was called on the Browns in the end zone, so the Lions were given one final chance from the 1-yard line. Daunte Culpepper came into the game. Then Eric Mangini called a timeout. This enabled Stafford to come back into the game. He then threw the game-winning touchdown pass. I watched the end of that game and thought it was utterly moronic of Mangini to call a timeout considering Culpepper was in the game. The timeout was either going to allow Culpepper an extra minute or two to shake off the cobwebs after standing on the sideline all day- or it was going to allow Stafford to come back.
that's simply unnecessary. pass interference that prohibits a receiver from catching the ball has the same effect no matter how "severe" it is, so why penalize them differently? where is the logic in that? why should the penalty be less for a bump than a tackle if the result is the same -- incompletion? that makes no sense whatsoever.
The jets have been on the losing end of a shit load of bad calls all fucking year! It started with the attack on Cromartie in week 1 has has been absolutely horrible. The Jets didn't get a gift yesterday,a moron who is supposed to be a pro, blatantly wrapped his hand on the face mask. he didn''t just make contact. How the hell can you even argue that call? The Refs did all they could to give Denver that game and they and Denver both lost.
i remember this game... it was a grate finish... obviously mangini botched the clock management at the end of the game.
Here's how you can argue the call- you have to hate the Jets and think that NFL games should be officiated like NBA games. Francesser went a half hour extra today because he did his show from Yankee Stadium. Sometime between 6:25 and 6:40, an obvious Jets hater called to bitch about the pass interference call. He said that NBA refs don't blow their whistles at the end of games. The caller essentially believes that penalties should not be called at the end of NFL games. He also believes the NFL should follow the NBA's model.
This is why Pass Interference is one of the dumbest penalties in football. I don't care what the guy does, no penalty should be worth 46 yards...I am happy we won, but at the same time I kinda hate that we ultimately won because of a penalty (justifiable as it may be).
Right, because football would be much more exciting and fun to watch if every time a WR got a step or position on a DB down the field he was tackled to prevent him from making the catch because the penalty was only 15 yards or something.
actually, that's why it is the best penalty in football, because it rights the foul 100% and awards the victimized team the ball where they would have had it had he not been interfered with. I would love to hear your argument for only giving the team 15 yards when they would have gotten 46 yards on the play. the point of the penalty is to not reward the offending team. you are arguing to award the offending team. that is just stupid beyond words. the only argument you could possibly have is that there is no guarantee that they would catch it. well that becomes null and void once the defender doesn't allow him the opportunity.
Spot foul on DPI is a necessary evil for obvious reasons. DB's need to be coached properly about the situation - it's really that simple.
some people seem to think that would make good football by how stupid some of the responses in this thread have been.
The penalty is what it is. Did Baltimore fans complain when they were given a TD week 1? Holmes got interfered with, no matter how much those fat cunts (Fatcessa or King) want to complain.
Francesser complained about the call? I didn't hear his whole show today (most of it was about baseball anyway, I would imagine), but from what I did hear he was all for the pass interference call. Miamipuck, you can't believe all this shit about Francesser here. There are a lot of Francesser haters here who simply make up shit. It's unreal. People have to be more fair.
