A lot of good people in that Broncos thread. After losing such a close game, I'd expect a lot more to be slamming the refs blindly. Instead, there's quite a few Broncos fans showing logic with their posts & pointing the finger where it should be. As time passes, I'm sure most of the Broncos fans who look at the play again will believe it's pass interference. As soon as game ends, it's tough for most fans to take off those homer-tinted glasses. Without the head-twist, I don't think the ref throws a flag. However, without the facemask pull, Holmes most likely catches that ball. After the facepull, Holmes is sitting on his ass on the field & still nearly makes the catch. === Refs made plenty of bad calls & non-calls today. The penalty on Leonard for hitting the receiver WHILE IN BOUNDS was too much. The play Rex challenged & lost, I thought he'd win. Also, lots of holding/grabbing by Broncos LB & secondary on those short patterns that wasn't called.
Totally agree MP! Not only that some of those calls against the Jets were suspect. I mean really, the OPI against Holmes and I believe it was Keller were both ridiculous.
so entertained, I read the whole thread they have.... need these in green both of which could be used any time Gholston is mentioned.
The explanation is that it was another blown call by the refs, he did not maintain control through out the catch. If this crew was officiating the Lions game where their receiver caught the TD pass and not maintained control while in the endzone they would have called it a TD.
It was absolutely PI, I am still surprised they called it but it was the right call and w/ all the calls Denver got all game long they really cannot complain.
Wait wut? I think by now the original poster of the comment understands the folly of the original asessment as many posters (who know the rules) have corrected it. That said I think the intent of the original comment was that PI calls are too liberal in general, which would again be incorrect. There is absolutely no other way to ensure defenders allow recievers a chance to make a play on the ball other than to dole out the most severe penalty possible, else (as other posters here have correctly pointed out) defenders would be bear hugging and body slamming recievers for 15 yard personal fouls rather than give up 50 yd TD passes. Edit: If memory serves, there was at one time two different types of PI calls, one an "incidental contact foul" for 15 yards, and a more severe "spot of the foul" penalty. I believe the former was scrapped as it made PI calls far too subjective and gave the officials far too much power to effect the outcome of a game.
Considering the facemask "interfered" with the catch, it becomes an interference. Easy enough, only good call of the game. If it hadn't happened RIGHT in front of the jerk off, it probably wouldn't have been called.
If he was in bounds then why was it a personal foul? That was a clean hit with his shoulder, He did not spear him. I still do not understand that call. Complete BS and it set up the TD on the next play because we lost our protest on weather the TD was a catch. Not to mention the holding penalty that was not called on that play. Those are the worst refs, period!
You absolutely CANNOT call facemask when the foul is committed with the ball about to be caught. Imagine how ridiculous that rule would be..rather than interfering receivers who are about to catch the ball, corners could grab their facemask instead and receive a lesser penalty. This was an all or nothing call, and I believe it was the right call. Holmes even got both his hands on the ball, so it is absurd that Bronc fans are saying it was un-catchable
The officiating in yesterday's game was absolutely absurd. You can probably expect to have a questionable penalty called on your team once or twice during a game when you're playing on the road, but we had at least 4 completely bogus calls go against us which all had a significant impact on the potential outcome. Even if the call on the Holmes play had been a total phantom call I wouldn't have minded because the game probably never would have been that close if it weren't for all the bullshit calls that went against us earlier. We deserved a break at that point. I hate to complain about anything after a win, but I had to vent at least a little bit because those refs were just awful.
Anyone who agrees with the people arguing for a facemask instead of P.I. is retarded. Grabbing Holmes facemask interfered with him making the catch(a catch that he still came pretty close to making) that is the definition of pass interference.
We had more .gif's on the other version of TGG...for some reason they didn't want to add all of them. but that would be great... typing :ghost: or :gholston: would =
I don't think we actually have the video of the play but I might have missed it. You can see that Holmes does slightly grab onto Hill's jersey as he tries to get in position to make the catch. You can also see Hill face guarding Holmes and lose his balance right when he turns to look for the ball, which in my opinion negates any grab Holmes may have made because face guarding is not allowed in the NFL. Hill does gets his head around and in his attempt to play the ball ends up hooking Holmes facemask. It was a good attempt but he blatantly grabs the facemask whether he meant it or not and when a guy gets both hands on a ball like that the disruption that grabbing that facemask causes can be the difference between a catch and a drop. Obviously a correct call by the official.
