Now would be as good a time to try him out as any. Ryan has nothing to lose in his first season as head coach. Mangini likely waited too long to start truly rebuilding the team. In 2006, he pulled out all the stops to get to 10-6 and win now, and the wheels fell off last season. He needed a stronger rebound than 9-7 and a GJC to keep the team. For Ryan, if he puts Ratliff in and we initially struggle, it's a better scenario than putting together one last winning season and falling apart for the next two.
I'm not a huge fan of Schotty's, but I think this is a good move. Ryan is a defensive minded coach, so now he has two coaches (Schotty and Callahan) who can give him good recommendations on the existing offensive personnel and what the offense needs going forward. Also, if we do go with Kellen or Ratliff, it will be much better to have them running the same system they have gotten familiar with then to bring in a new OC and a new playbook. This will make the transition much easier for Ryan and let him focus on the defense.
If the defense is what Ryan says it will be and wants it to be, we can get by without a superstar QB. The Ravens won a Super Bowl with an average QB, so did Tampa Bay, so did the Giants in 1990.
Going back to something covered on another thread here, if Schott is staying it should follow he had a good answer to what to do at Qb. Could the Jets start either or both Clemens and Ratliff on opening day? I have to assume this question was asked, and Schott had an answer other than I don't know.
You named two that did win but you do know how hard it is to win a SB without a franchise QB, right? And those two had absolutely ferocious defenses when they won.
That is the point. Of course it's better to have a great QB, goes without saying, but the point is with a big time D you can win with a decent QB, not a Hall of Fame QB. The 1985 Bears were another example, Jim McMahon was a cool charactar but an average QB, they had that D and Walter Payton.
You seem to bond really strongly with who is currently with the club. Not only is Favre a year older, he has an additional tear in his arm that will impede his thowing. Also what makes you think he would be happy as a game manager and what is going to prevent him from making the throws into coverage that is his hallmark? Give it up, he needs to go.
Maybe so, but it was not fourth and 20 or forth and 40. Any way you slice it that call was beyond moronic. Then when you consider Favre's recent streak at the time i am not sure I have an adjective to describe the dumbness that went into that call.
His arm is fine and even hurt you could still see he could throw, his problems were mental and a year in the system and playing w/ these players will benefit him greatly. if he comes back he doens't have to be a game mgr, I'll expect more but he won't be a gunslinger either. We need better balance.
To run on 4th and 2 is moronic and the deep ball wasn't the primary target, no one complained when we hit a HR against Ari in a very similar situation. he just made the wrong read or his short routes were covered.
I do like this move. It essentially gives us next year to see if Shotty was inept on his own or because Mangini limited his play selection. It also allows continuity on the offensive side of the ball at the very least, which I think is big considering our personnel and the fact that the defense is getting an overhaul. Either way, I think it only means 1 year for Shotty. He does well and he probably gets a HC job somewhere. If not, Rex boots him for someone else. While he's under contract with us, it's worth the risk to see what we have in him.
I agree with this. We ran the ball very well, ran it down Tennesse's throats in their place. We don't need a complete makeover, we need to not turn the ball over 18 times in the last five games, or whatever it was. No coach can overcome that. Plus, like you said, the D is going to be remade, which is more needed. If we play the kind of D he's talking about, the offense just needs to hang onto the ball and jam it down people's throats. Especially when it gets cold in the Meadowlands.
As long as Ryan can reel Schotty in and force him to stick to the run I like this move. Run the ball 60/40 or get punched in the face.
I Saw it on ESPN and they said Scott Linehan is the new OC of the Lions. I Wouldn't have minded shotty jr. out.
