This was pretty much the predominant theory. Except with starter in place of backup because at the time, that's where Clemens was set to play.
I'd rather take a 50-year-old something Pat Ryan back than watch Clemens even touch a football again. Hell, I'd rather have Mark Brunell. At least he can handle a snap.
