I would never wish bad on the Jets eye8dapats but I am being honest the 2nd worst pass D in the game & no QB. I am not going to lie & say everything is going to be rosie next year & that we are going to the playoffs cause it aint gonna happen.

We had the 7th best run defense last season in the NFL, our run defense was fall from abysmal. Our pass defense was the problem, we ranked 29th last season.

Jets message boards remind me of grade school where the popular kids decide who has cooties and then everyone is supposed to be mean to them. First Herm had cooties, then Penny, then Mangini and then Favre. Kellen Clemons has gone from savior to scrub. Favre went from messiah QB to stupid redneck. Mangini from genius to "doesn't show enough emotion", whatever that actually means. None of these people was ever as good or as bad as they were described by the majority during their trips from messiah to scapegoat. The truth is that Favre is still better the FA options, the QBs on the roster and the QBs in the draft. But he is also old, his abilities and his interest in the game have declined and his salary is ridiculous. And the whole drama surrounding his off season decisions has worn thin on people. Does that justify the abuse he's now receiving? No, he's a sweet natured person who was one of the top 10 QBs in the history of the league. People need to show some moderation or were going to keep repeating this pattern of blaming one person, like Penny, for the team's failures and then watching him thrive with another team. But its like trying to push back the tide.

Favre brought the team to 8-3, throwing six TD's in a single game against a team that went to the Super Bowl. He gave us one of the most gratifying wins in recent memory by helping beat NE in a huge game. The following week he helped the team take down the only undefeated team in the NFL. On the road for both those last two, as well.

At some point he got injured. This should be obvious - it affected his play. This happens from time to time.

    Pudden,

I have enjoyed your presence here. I frankly hope you will stay despite Favre's departure.

Teams that collapse have scapegoats. The leaders who don't lead and get paid the big bucks to perform in big situations tend to be over praised when things go well and kicked when things don't. Favre fans seem to want us only to see the 3X MVP from 20 years ago and ignore the 5 time goat down the stretch for our team. I loved getting him and have no issue with him taking the major part of the responsability for his outright choke down the stretch of the season when he was brought in and being paid to lead down the stretch.

Favre was great in 97 and 98 but he was outright awful in 2008.

Now that it's all said and done (we assume), I have no beef with Favre. He was old and he came in late, but he gave it his best shot and was committed for the season he was here. In the end he gave us the decision we probably needed, did it like a man, did it in a timely enough fashion and with class, didn't throw anyone under the bus for his own short-comings. It's not like it was a total washout, we got to 8-3, beat a couple of good teams on the road, and looked at one point like the best team in the AFC.

When it broke down at the end it wasn't all Favre's fault, but we needed the icon 1996 Brett Favre to save the day and he just couldn't do it. The old Favre maybe pulls some magic out of his ass at San Francisco or Seattle, then the defense saves him in the Buffalo game and maybe we end up making a playoff run. We tried, he tried, it just didn't happen. So we all move on and be glad we swung for the fence instead of just bunting the runner along. And going forward we have $13 million in cap space, a new coach and a clean slate at QB. Could be a lot worse.

Great post, IS. I especially like the swung for the fence part.

Of course I have to add that Favre also enabled this team to get rid of Chad.

Heh. I didn't want to disappoint you.

Favre didn't bring the team to 8-3 by himself, just like the defense didn't lose 4 out of the last 5 games by themselves. If Favre was so injured that he couldn't have thrown the ball long accurately, he should have either told the CS he wasn't able to make those throws or had his shoulder checked out or something. But he's Brett Favre and needs to extend his streak. Nobody is without blame, including Favre.

I watched every game multiple times, and your blanket statement is meaningless. There were times this season that the D did their job and the offense couldn't do theirs. The first Patriots game comes to mind. And to say the entire D didn't do their job is moronic. Just like there were a few breakdowns in the offensive roster, there were also breakdowns in the defensive lineup.

Haha. Not to start an argument, but to me the one downside is that we let Chad go to Miami and revive them to the point where they won the division and are again an attractive franchise. Had he gone somewhere far it would have been much better for me, not only as a "Chad Fan" :) but for the Jets. Like him or not, we're going to have to deal with him twice a year head-to-head and if he's healthy he's going to nickel and dime them far enough to be an annoyance for a few years to come.

You've seen Chad try and play against a Rex Ryan defense right? I guess we'll find out real quick if it was more talent than scheme.

Ed Reed and Ray Lewis had a little bit to do with a Rex Ryan defense, as did Miami only dressing three WRs and losing one early in the game. Chad had a bad day but so did most QBs vs the Ravens, Super Bowl Ben included. That doesn't change the fact that Chad's in our divison and completely capable of leading almost any team to 10 or 11 wins, which directly impacts us and our chances of reaching the post-season, as it already has once.

Absolutely they did, like I said we'll find out how much impact the scheme has very quickly. Maybe Kerry Rhodes will become a big time play maker in Ryans attacking scheme. I sure hope he does.

Rothlisberger played very well against the Ravens even if his numbers don't look great. Chad looked like a bum, and my opinion is that he usually does against top defenses. If Ryan can turn the Jets D into one similar to the Ravens I'm not worried about Chad in Miami at all.

For real? You didn't see him pick off Chad in the playoffs?

Again, let's see how much impact his schemes have. I'm excited to see if he can turn our talented defensive players into big time playmakers.

Favre said yesterday on 1050, that he is unwilling to have the micro ortho surgery done, "on my thrownin' shoulder" which is the main reason that he is retiring.

Favre also stated, that he had, "a wake up call, at 39." IMHO Favre would LOVE to still play, but the reality is, his shoulder is 39 yrs old, and it is injured.

Favre told 1050 that, "the team will be better this year, than last year."

Folks across the United States love Brett Favre, and have for a long time. That is why Favre has been the #1 selling jersey FOREVER. He is a legend & a player that kids love to emulate.

Hehehe... I must have missed that. At any rate, I hope you are right, cause I've seen the last Jets game I wanna see where we lost to Penny and the Dolphins. Hopefully he can get a bit more mileage and performance out of our defensive unit.

That's why top defenses are top defenses, and that's why 11 of the best 12 QBs lose in the playoffs every year. I'm not just talking about the two times we play Miami, having him in the division means they will be a threat to win 10-11 games as long as he's there and healthy. That has a direct impact on the Jets, and my original point is that's the downside to the Favre move, in hindsight. If Chad went to Chicago or somewhere, all the success he could have wouldn't really be relevant to the Jets and the whole Favre thing is over. Having him in Miami leaves a residual effect to the move that we have to deal with now for a few years to come, personally I liked Miami better as a 1-15 doormat.

Hopefully Rex builds a Ravenesque defense here and we stop Chad and Brady en route to the Super Bowl, but I think my point is simple enough and for now it stands.

Yeah, but following up on the point you just made, don't you think Miami no longer being a doormat has a lot more to do with the greatly improved D this year, than Pennington? Pennington was good, but no where near THAT good IMO that he is anything more than a small part of the Phins success. He was "good enough."

Something comparable happened on my Packers (bringing it up here only to make the general point). Aaron Rodgers had a good year, frankly better than I thought he would (and I was even expecting him to play well to begin with). He may have played better than Favre would have. But the Packers went from 13-3 to 6-10 (with two of those 6 wins gifts from Motown). IMO the difference between 07 and 08 was > 80% due to defensive decline, hardly anything had to do with the QB change.

I wonder how long Chad will start for Miami. I wouldn't necessarily assume it's for a few years. I appreciate there is nothing to necessarily prevent him from avoiding further injury, but he is a proven china doll, and he is one sack away from a lengthy stay on IR. China Dollington.

And the FO saw his playoff performance the same as we all did. If they think they can come up with a Qb who will serve them better, he won't need another injury to be replaced.
