I like your list, however I'd probably slide Amaro to the potential disappointment list. Dropped passes are always something to be concerned about, some guys get over it but many more do not. We'll see, but it wouldn't shock if he earns lower playing time because of stone hands. One guy I'd like to add to the Breakout Candidates list is Bilal Powell. I think he's fallen under the radar again because of Ridley and Stacy, but I think he's going to have a role that none of the other 3 will share: something of a third down back, taking a lot of swing passes and cutback runs. I think he'll be utilized more this season than he ever has in the past and will surprise many who've otherwise written him off at this point.
I hope that your first sentence will be proven correct. I have my doubts. Your last statement is irrelevant. Yes, we've done a lot worse at LT, but that doesn't mean that Brick's play isn't showing serious signs of deterioration and that the team shouldn't be looking for his replacement within the next year.
I hope you are right. I see major issues with some of the stuff you can't teach, like instincts - angles to receivers, coverage ball skills, etc. I also think he's a penalty waiting to happen in today's NFL. I think he's going to hurt this defense more than help it. If he played in the 80s, or 90s where teams didn't spread it out as much, safeties were asked to help with stopping the run and you could actually hit someone he would've been very good. Today's NFL not so much. Teams will get him out in space and exploit him in coverage. He's a Brandon Meriweather. In an era where a Brandon Meriweather hurts his team more than helping it with the penalties and a team like NE sees this and just outright cuts him. The role Pryor should play in the league is as a luxury safety that comes in to blitz the QB or coming in the box to help in stopping the run on shorter yardage/obvious running situations. That's a fine role for someone to play in this league but disappointing to end up with that as your 1st round draft pick. Especially in a year where we saw unprecedented early success across the board from that draft class. That's a role Rontez Miles can play for example.
Plug in a good guard in between Brick and Mangold and Brick's play will get much better. 2 more seasons of Brick IMO. We should be looking for a LT that can start at RT for the moment; Breno is trash guys.
People like to underestimate how much a serviceable guard does for a tackle. What's the number one rule an offensive lineman is taught? Protect the inside first and foremost. Regardless of protection if the tackle sees his guard getting bowling balled by, then he needs to help if it's to the outside of the guard. It's instinctual since obviously the quickest route to the quarterback is closer to the center. Brick will be fine when he's not constantly worried about Brian Winters getting beat by the same fake in and then blast up field move time and time again.
Breakouts amaro- not worried about the drops. Concentration drops happen with rookies. You don't catch 100 balls with bad hands. He will look very hood this tear coples. He has never been bad but this year he will be good and put up the stats that will get everyone off his back millner. Going on a limb here. He gets extensive time down the stretch and show why he was consideeed a top pick disappointments carpenter. Lot of bad history here. I think we will have a different guard by the end of the year folk. Kickers run hot and cold. Could be due for a cold spell Richardson. Hasn't he already?
Not me. I love Brick. To have that guy over there locking that position down for as long as he has with little help to his right? Bricks been a rock for us. _
Very premature but I'm hoping Jarvis Harrison (5th round, OG, Texas A&M) turns some heads in camp. On defense, even if they don't break out, would like to see Milliner and McDoogle on the mend getting out and staying out on the field while continuing to develop. Disappointment: thus far, Sparky Richardson.
I think the Jets will be extremely fortunate to get two more years out of Brick, and that's only if he is willing to take a pretty hefty pay cut. There's no way they can pay him what he's due the next two seasons (after this one).
What exactly are Brick's "serious sings of deterioration" you keep speaking of? He gave up like 1 sack last season and I believe is ranked in the top 5 or 10 LTs in the league, which means there's 25 other teams that would be glad to have him.
Absolutely, restructures will be in order to clear the cap. I think we can get at least 3 more seasons out of Brick, until the age of 33 or 34. LTs age pretty decently.
Aboushi looked good in the run game but was pretty bad in passing situations even with help from Mangold. With Carpenter likely at the other guard position being very good in the pass game but a liability in the run game, I hope the Aboushi is able to make the leap and be solid in the pass game as well. If he makes the jump then the O-line is looking pretty decent. Thinking Smith is riding the pine by game 4 or 5, not expecting much at all from him.
Actually I think it's reversed. Everything is expected of the defense, so they have the most likely chance to disappoint. Guys like Amaro, Devin Smith, Brent Qvale, and others aren't expected to do much and could break out.
