I'm with you Revis--Gus and the cartel players were what kept me riveted. I wasn't enthralled with some of the Cranston content like his problems with his wife. When he was interacting in the meth production and distribution areas that was riveting. I can't think of a minute of Gus that didn't keep me on the edge of my seat.
One of my favorite Gus moments was when he had just finished being questioned by the DEA and they cut to the shot of him in the elevator tapping his fingers together. It was so understated and did a great job of presenting him as this raging inferno on the inside with a calm and measured exterior shell that almost never broke.
How about the time he was so upset about losing some money that it manifested itself into an obsessive-compulsive state whereby the oil fryer could never be clean enough--if you don't recognize this from my not so great description, he had his boy asst. manager wash it painstakingly several times. How about when he cut Victors throat--who the hell saw that coming--Cranston shock was amazing acting. It was never clear why he did it but I thought it was because Victor was seen in Gales' apartment.
It's tough to compare the two shows. Even tougher to say Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad. It has been really good, and I am excited for the final season, but it can't quite compare to Breaking Bad. It doesn't have to though. Still amazing.
There were so many memorable characters on that show. It's easy to overlook performances like David Costabile as Gail because they were so lowkey. When Gail was killed it was like a shot to the heart because he was such a likable guy in such a bad crowd. It's hard to like a meth-making prodigy just as it's hard to root for a meth-making dropout but the writing and acting was so good that Breaking Bad pulled it off. Bryan Cranston's play off of both of those performances, one long-running and one for a season was just typical of the magic the show created.
I'm hooked. I'm trying not to read other posts to avoid spoilers because I only just finished season 2, but I am pissed I didn't start watching this earlier. [its my fault if I read something I shouldn't have and by venturing into this thread]
Completely epic show went out in an epic episode. It was like the scene where Ahab rides Moby Dick to the bottom.
