I had that thought last week, but now I'm not so sure. Then again, Jason Taylor played for the Jets...

No way. Taylor filled a need. Jets don't need a underachieving running back ... also, Jacobs took it a step too far. Rex will never get past anger to accept him

Jonny...you are dead on. Some people think because we have been to two AFC championship games, that THAT has made us relevant.

I do not believe anyone truly thinks the Jets are now relevant because of those two things alone. Anyone that uses the word relevant and 2 AFC champ games alone isnt being honest.

Just as strong a case could be made that along with those two games...we are a bunch of loudmouth trash talking idiots who have not won a Superbowl. I agree Jon..his press conferences are a total embarrassment. They are loaded with compliments for the opponent to cover his ass so he can say he always compliments his opponent. Its bullshit. You trash people and then kiss them every Sunday night. Its old.

What makes a coach and GM special is building a powerhouse football team. The Jets have done it with smoke and mirrors for 2 years now and I wouldnt be the least surprised come next Sunday at 730pm...we pull this off again. Thats the Jets biggest plus. Pulling rabbits out of hats.

What it doesnt do is show that during the Tanny/Rex regime, the Jets are on their way to being a year in and year out contender. Nobody can honestly say that this roster is stronger than the roster Rex started with.

We are weaker at linebacker...have never developed a frontline pass rush. Declined running game. Safety play has stayed the same....horrendous. Offensive line is weaker. Brought in two superstar receivers and have nothing to show for it.

One thing should be very easy to do. Next years roster should be better than this one because this years is a completely flawed roster. Bring in a new OC and run real NFL plays and that should help. I can go on and on.

If Rex dares to be the same Rex next year it will probably be his last. I just cant imagine he is that stupid.

Problem is Ryan's best team may have been the '09 one. That was basically a Mangini team aside from the QB. A couple years later, several of the key players on that 2009 team are gone and have been replaced by subpar players. Ryan has helped put a mediocre team on the field. Can he, along with the scouts and Tannenbaum, make better personnel evaluations this offseason? Time will tell.

Roger Come Lately. I already called it. In this thread, even. Great minds, right? ;)

    Seriously?

Look, I give all the credit in the world to the Jets for winning that playoff game and for making the AFC East interesting the last three seasons, but the notion that the Patriots started anything in terms of trash talking since Ryan came to town is downright delusional.

Most NYJ fans get this. Others are in the "dish it out, can't take it" category.

Well, despite Welker putting his foot in his mouth, I'd hardly say that was the "first salvo."

    (See what I did there?)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't that follow Cromartie's choice words about Brady, Braylon Edwards' taunting penalty for the Dougie, etc-etc?

I know abyzmul and I had a bit of a discussion on this recently, but any notion that the Patriots "started" the war of words is, sorry to say, just delusional.

Oh, of course they didn't really start it, but they also didn't exactly take the high road. They did their fair share of taunting, and it hasn't been uncharacteristic of them, either - see the Lights-Out playoff celebration standing on the Chargers logo in 2007, or Rodney Harrison flapping his Eagles taunt when they beat Philly in the Super Bowl.

They are unfairly treated as the model of professionalism, mainly because of Coach Mumbles' refusal to show any emotion, ever.

    This fan base is unreal.

I hope Rex is let go at the end of the season. These whiny posters deserve another mediocre coaching carousel like we had the last 10 years with Groh, Hermie, and Mangini. I bet everyone will be happy with a humble quiet coach that might sneak into the playoffs at 9-7 and makes a quiet exit in the first round.

    You all deserve it....

How long have you been a Jet fan. I know I've been a fan since the beginning and the Jets have never been to two consecutive AFCCG in franchise history until the the Rex/Tanny regime. Even this year , they are still alive for a playoff shot in week 17, to me that is being relevant. I remeber too many of the lean years under Charley Winner, Walton, Coslett, Kotite , those were some bad years - so yes these past 3 years and in reality theast deacade has been the best ever for Jets football.

Now don't get me wrong I also want what every fan here craves another SB win and that is the ultimate goal, but to say not winning one means their irrelevant is rather annoying and short sighted.

You say the mark of a coach/GM is to build a powerhouse football team to this I may have agreed with you prior to the salary cap. Every team in the NFL has some unit/facet of their team that needs improvement and its not because their GM/scouts/coaches are slacking its because there's a hard cap limit. The Jets clearly have holes, they have poor depth at the OL, they have sloooow Lbers' and Safeties and they have a redzone WR as their 2nd starter. Did the front office make some mistakes - sure did , but so does just about every front office in the NFL. They pray they don't suffer any significant injuries and hope that their depth is able to raise their game when called upon this is where the Jets have been hurt this year , some of their deveelopmental and depth type players have not stepped up.

I agree its time for a new OC, but a new OC isn't going to make Wayne Hunter into Orlando Pace, he's not going to turn Mulligan into Mark Bavaro, he's not gonna make Plax/Santonio run better routes , but better schemes can get teh offense back to being more than adequate.

And finally to the last point about Rex. When he was hired every Jet fan drooled when he stated we're not going to kiss Belicheck's rings and if you hit one of our players we'll hit two of yours. Rex, has brought back the mentality that is needed to win and thrive in this game, its just unfortunate the talent level is a notch below the elite teams in the league. To even insuniate that the Jets lose because their coach openly expresses his intent is assinine. Every coach props his team up and will do whatever it takes to fire up his squad, its just that most do it within the confines of their lockerooms , but trust me they all do it - ours does candidly and for the world to hear - so what.

Ddue, youre completely missing the original point about relevency. We were saying that the Jets were already "relevent" before Rex got there.

Yup. Rex brought about a culture change in this team, and its fan base, in a very short period of time. One part of doing that was maintaining an infectious air of self-confidence that breathed new life into a thoroughly deflated organization. Now, he's hit a roadblock, and some folks are already talking about trading him in for some stoic "professional" who won't ruffle any feathers with brash comments. Fuck that. Rex can sure as Hell coach a defense and motivate players. Get him an OC who can pull his weight, patch up some holes in the roster, and his approach will work just fine.
