There were a couple of play-action calls, and the direct snap(which still went up the gut). If I'm right and not overreacting - which is a possibility - the problem became that 2nd down was almost always a pass and if it didn't succeed, it was a pass on third. I'd like to see more runs for this offense given the personnel. The problem that I'm seeing is that when Schottenheimer keeps calling that first down in the a-gap and it turns out to be for 2 yards, he seems to start shying away from the run rather than mixing up his play-calling which could help make that run more effective.
Did anyone hear plaxico in the post game? He said they game planned for a certain coverage by the jaguars and the jaguars played a totally different look. Every week it seems like our OC gets outsmarted by the other team. I think the biggest problem right now is the offensive line. Schotty is going to be limited if Hunter can't pass block and the entire line isn't run blocking.
I still don't get how people stand up for this moron. Again... maybe Plax was doubled and that opened up the field for Keller... I can understand not forcing it. But what the hell do you sign Mason for? He's an automatic 5 yards, yet on third down we send him 20 yards deep? He's not a big physical receiver, he can't leap over a double team or overpower a corner/safety. I could count the number of times on one hand where we needed to pick up 4 yards and Mason was either off the field or not part of the play. And please, god forbid we run a screen play. I don't care if it's a blowout, it wasn't for the whole first half and we were struggling to move the ball. Schottenheimer is terrible, and there's not really too much you can say to prove otherwise. If it wasn't for Sanchez making plays to Keller we would have had no offense. I've never seen a guy with so much talent and no clue how to cater to it.
I agree with you about the screen passes, but I have to disagree about Mason--he's got to earn his catches. Throughout the preseason and the first two games he's been had trouble getting open, and he's blown at least two easy plays (one that should've been a first down today, one that should've been a touchdown last week.) I'd love it if he were "an automatic 5 yards," but so far he hasn't been that at all for us.
He's had trouble getting open because he's not being utilized the right way. He's run tremendous routes for us but he's not being used the way I thought he'd be used and the way he was used by the Ravens in later years. A slant, a quick 5 yard out. Regardless, he's not supposed to be sent 20 yards downfield or up a sideline when you have Keller, Holmes and Burress. It's not like Schottenheimer has EVER been able to cater to his talent, so this is nothing new.
The last sentence really hits the nail on the head for me. This offense, last year and this year has so many diverse weapons. We have a big time play-maker in Santonio, we have the big physical WR in Plax and Braylon last year, we have the big above average receiving tight end in DK, we have a bruiser in Shonn Greene and we have a great receiving RB in Tomlinson. On top of that we have guys like Mason and Kerley and Joe McKnight who could provide some depth. Very few teams have the amount of different weapons that we have on offense. All these guys bring something different to the table and it seems Brian struggles with taking advantage of our guy's unique skill sets. Take advantage and set something up. Take advantage of a mis-match. I don't understand how it could possibly so hard.
Exactly. And while Sanchez isn't exactly lighting it up out there... give the kid a chance at having some success. Other than Keller, what does Schotty give him? We sign a monster red zone target and he isn't show the ball until the third quarter two games in a row. We have one of the fastest playmaking WRs in the league and he gets sent into traffic. We have one of the best pass-catching RBs in the history of the game and we wait until 3rd and 7 to throw him the ball and force him to make a play for extra yardage. We could be so much better (because Sanchez would be better) if Schottenheimer had any clue whatsoever on how to move the ball.
Sanchez is doing fine for a guy who has about 1.5 seconds to throw the ball on the average play. The offensive line is like a sieve this year with problems at RT and LG and maybe now at C for a bit. We're just lucky that Sanchez is still standing at this point. Generally speaking Sanchez is still having problems when he throws the ball up the left seam. Other than that I'm really happy with what he's done so far this season. If Schotty was doing proper diligence he'd stop running two receivers up the left side as often as he does. That's been Sanchez achilles heel since his rookie season and it's where 2 of the 3 int's this year have happened.
Good point I never noticed that about Sanchez. Now that you bring it up it does seem like that is the direction where more of the picks seem to come from. Namely the game ender in Chicago last year seems to stick out the most. I'm gonna try to remember this when watching the next few games.
You'll never see it again for another 3 years. That's usually the time frame he has for calling a good quarter and a half of a football game.
Not really. I think it makes a lot of sense. He has no catches, barely targeted and isn't being used correctly, the entire 4th quarter he and Plax stand alone at the end of the sideline, and the next morning he's thanking God for giving him patience and being in a positive state of mind. Hardly a reach.
ROFL. THAT'S When Rex needs to take a page from Robert Loggia in Necessary Roughness, run over to Schotty rip that page out of the play book and say 'DONT EVER RUN THAT AGAIN'
Despite the win and my relative defense of Schotty in the past, I am concerned that the running game looks so shakey. It's not all on BS, but it is somewhat on him, to be sure. Here's what concerns me: Hunter. Damn, this guy looked resaonably good at the end of last season. WTF? Was that a mirage? And the penalties. OMG. In a 32-3 blowout, Hunter had me wincing, numerous times. Awful. LT. He's still contributing in the passing game, although he dropped an easy one there. But yesterday, he had nothing on his runs. I dunno, I sure hope he's not fallen off that much, but just maybe he has. Greene. It's hard to tell how much is his fault, and he did have a couple of good runs there. But any Jet fan who is not at least wondering how well it's going to work with him as the featured back is just not paying attention. The OL's overall run blocking. We got spoiled by the performance level here the last few years, basically since Mangold and Ferguson started contributing, Moore took over RG and Woody and Faneca came and helped out. And certainly we all understand why they let Faneca go, and injuries led to Woody's retiring. But stepping back a bit, and despite Slauson's improvement from early last year, I get the sinking feeling the OL is in decline for resaons not solely limited to Hunter. I didn't used to post here back during the Herm and Badway days, but along with their overdependence on Chadwick, the thing that really upset me was how they let the OL go into decline. The point being that I will defend Schotty from criticism when he is merely dealing with the need to develop Sanchez and the limitations that come from that. But any role he may prove to have in being a party to not keeping the OL up to a certain standard, well, as Vito Corleone would say, that I will not forgive. Let's hope the problems on the OL will be shortlived, and easily fixed, although not so easily if Mangold really is out a few games. And if they aren't, then Ryan and Mikey T also share the blame, not to mention Callahan who too many here think is some kind of underused genius. But Schotty is the OC, and the way this team is built, it requires a top shelf OL. Right now the concern is the Jets do not have one.
are you guys really whing about yesterday too? I think the concerns on O have nothing to do w/ the OC and playcalling but rather how poorly Wayne Hunter has looked so far and Mangold's injury.
you may want to add, although its implied, greene looking more and more like thomas jones dancing at the LOS instead of running downhill like he used to on first down. as that too isn't on schotty, but affects our O.
The other major concern on O yesterday was third down conversions. Yikes. But as always, the arguments go back and forth whether that was more on the lack of execution by the players than on the OC. But going forward it is a concern.
