Watch the tape. The defender drove up from his feet through his upper body right into Allen's helmet. He was not passively taking a hit, Allen was wrapped up and going down, Jones drove his head into Allen's head. It was dirty and illegal. If that happened too Brady the guy would be arrested and his children would have been in witness protection for their own safety.

I didn't think it looked much at all at the time. Nothing comparable to Burfict for sure. I'm not sure how much Jones did wrong really. If Allen hadn't lowered his head into the tackle there wouldn't have been a problem with the tackle.

I liked Chad Pennington. I think he had the potential to be a HOF QB if not for his injury. He was well suited for a West Coast Offense.

Gronk's hit on Tre'Davious White is a dirty play. This play is not a dirty play.

When I see the replay, I see Allen exerting himself to get that extra yard for a first down. He's not backing down and tries to use his large size to muscle his way to a 1st down. Jones was trying to hit Allen with his shoulder pads, to prevent Allen from any forward progress. But football collisions are not always predictable, hence you see both players banging helmets. Jones celebrates the hit afterward because he has stopped Allen from getting a 1st down. When he realizes that Allen is hurt, he probably realized he looks like an asshole.

When I played football many years ago, I was taught when tackling to aim my helmet towards the middle of my opponent's chest. I rarely ever got my helmet to ever go there because moving targets are not so easy to hit. I can only imagine how in the pros how difficult it is to actually tackle perfectly.

The reason you will not see this type of play on Brady is simple. Brady rarely leaves the pocket and starts running. If he does he slides, something Allen should do if he is smart. It is my understanding Brady has actually suffered most of his concussions when he tried to run for short yardage gains. Again proving my principle that once a QB decides to be a runner, all bets are off.

Had Jones done this to Allen while he was in the pocket and vulnerable, I would agree with you 100% he should be thrown out of the game. Obviously the NFL agrees with me or they would have punished Jones further. Again when the QB leaves the pocket and the line of scrimmage, he is a runner.

But instead of arguing with me on whether the Jones hit was dirty, do you not see my point that a franchise QB needs to be smart when it comes to running. Had that 1st down been for a playoff game, then I can see why Allen did this. But for a regular-season game, simply slide dummy. I hope Darnold is being coached not to be dumb like Allen.

I am not sure if some of you know this, Mo Lewis's hit on Bledsoe almost killed him. What's incredible is that Bledsoe tried to continue playing in that game. Was Mo Lewis trying to hurt Bledsoe? I think we all know the answer. But when Bledsoe left the pocket and the line of scrimmage, he was a runner and Mo Lewis hunted him down.

I understand, even though I don't like it, the protections offered to QBs who are deemed helpless in the pocket. But when a QB starts running to make yards, he should not be given any more special privileges than any other runner. Otherwise, the game has become a game for wimps.

The fact that Allen has to learn to protect himself and Jones led with his head and drove through leading with his head are two different topics. When Mo Lewis hit Bledsoe the rules were different. When Night Trane Lane was killing WR the rules were different. We now know that head to head contact destroys the human brain. You're a fool if you think that was anything other than leading with your head and driving up into a defenseless player leading with your helmet. That's not legal anymore. The fact that the NFL has new rules all the time and most of the refs and the front office itself doesn't know how to apply them is a different issue. The rules and how they are applied are evolving.

With the medical evidence we now have regarding brain injuries and the long term disability associated with it, defending this based on team loyalty makes you look like a tool. Guys who lead with their heads for any reason and create direct high impact head to head contact need to be removed. The NFL is on thin ice, the data is clear. None of us can defend the indefensible anymore. Grow up. I played football 40 years ago. The data says what we did and how we played is no longer acceptable.

While I don't think the hit was intentional it was clearly a helmet to helmet hit. The problem was Harmon already had Allen wrapped up when Jones goes helmet to helmet. If a guy is already wrapped their is little excuse for helmet to helmet hits. The big issue being an illegal hit knocked the QB out of the game. A game the patriots barely won.

In all fairness, Allen was helping the Pats win the entire time he was on the field.

Let me get this straight, you can’t hit a QB high, you can’t hit a QB low, so the only target a defender has is the chest area? So when a QB becomes a runner and lowers his head to gain a extra yard. The defender is suppose to move out of the way and pat him on his ass on the way by? I absolutely agree that Jones committed a penalty on the play, but to call it dirty is foolish and you are acting like a “tool” . There is a easy solution to water down this game even more. Make it illegal for a QB not o go into a slide of run out of bounds. Because as far as I’m concerned once a QB crosses the line of scrimmage he is now a running back. And yes I would feel the same way if it happened to Brady.

Just because I am a Patriot fan does not make me a tool. Unlike other Patriot fans who have argued, there should be no penalty on the play makes them the tool, not me. I am not arguing against the penalty call.

Per our conversation, I went to youtube to watch the play in slow motion. I was trying to keep an open mind because maybe you are right and I may be wrong. Prior to contact, Allen is erect and his shoulders and head are slightly down. The ball is being held with both arms and is located at his breast just below his chin. Allen is protecting the ball nicely. As Allen is being tackled, he moves to his left and forwards to gain extra yardage. This puts him directly in front of Jones. At this point, Jones is also erect and slightly crouched down. Both Allen and Jones are facing the face of each other. Neither player actually has much room to lower themselves much because of their proximity. This in my humble opinion leads to the high hit.

When contact is about to made Jones moves his dead slightly down and to his left. Allen, on the other hand, is lowering his head because he is expecting contact. It appears from what I can tell, the right side of Jones's helmet and his shoulder contact the front of Allen's helmet. From what I can tell, the right side of Jones's helmet glances Allen's helmet. What knocks out Allen is the shoulder pad of Jones hitting Allen's jaw.

Had Jones not moved his head at the last second, this would have been more of a helmet to helmet hit with both players possibly being injured and Allen injured even more. This slight movement of Jones's head to the left also probably saved him on a fine and a possible suspension.

Had Jones lowered his head just a little more, he would have made contact with the ball and caused a possible fumble. I say possible because Allen has an excellent grip on the ball. I am pretty sure Belichick will point this out to him in the film review. This is a case of Jones's poor tackling causing him to hit Allen's head. This is easy for me to say when I watch a video in slow motion depicting probably several hundred milliseconds. But it is obvious from the video that Jones did not intentionally hit Allen in the head. One could argue the physical circumstances and Jones's poor tackling caused this. If this is your argument to punish Jones even further then I would argue you are being unreasonable. In my humble opinion, this was an accidental hit to the head that deserves just a 15 yard penalty and nothing more.

What upsets me the most about this play is how Dan Fouts opens up his big mouth and declares this a dirty hit immediately without even reviewing the video. Some in Patriot land have argued that he hates the Patriots. Personally I believe being a QB he tends to stick up for QBs. I have to give Troy Akmen credit tonight for questioning the late hit on Russel Wison by Clay Mathews.

I invite you to watch this play in slow motion on youtube. Maybe you will see something different? Also, can you admit that it is impossible to prevent any helmet contact in football? I think if a player is contacted by the helmet by accident or maybe poor tackling, it is not a dirty play necessarily. Vontaze Burfict hit which involves him launching himself and definitely using his helmet on purpose is a dirty hit. Gronk's hit on Tre'Davious White last year is a perfect example of a dirty hit. To argue Jones's hit was just as dirty is not sensible. But I will not call you a tool for having a different opinion.

Maybe you are right and Jones struck Allen's head on purpose. Then again maybe we will never know the answer. But the video evidence does not prove without any doubt this is the case. If in the future if we start seeing more hits like this from Jones, then I will be the first person to tell you I was wrong and you are right!

Pat-I didn't say he hit him head to head on purpose. What I said is he led with his head, drove up from his feet to deliver the hit with force and Allen was clearly defenseless. You can watch the tape in stop action. He set his feet, drove up through his feet, extended his knees to create force through his upper body and led with his head. It's not that complicated. It was illegal, the hit was vicious and Allen was defenseless.

Dan Fouts watched the hit live, watched a replay in slow motion and gave his opinion. I agree with it completely.

No you have it wrong. The player can be in the way, he can make a tackle. He can't lead with the crown of his helmet.

If you lead with your head on a defenseless running back you should be thrown out of the game. I'm not sure why you think leading with your head, driving through to create heavy contact with your head on a defenseless running back is okay.

It's not about watering the game down. The game as it was played is no longer viable from a liability perspective now that the data on brain injury is getting better. The game either changes or it's going to go away. It's not the good old days anymore when players were tough and guys get blasted with head shots.

Did Jonathan Jones lead with helmet when he tackled? I personally do not think he did. If you see the clip from [the other angle], namely behind Allen, you WILL see Jones leading - or trying to lead, at least - with his shoulder as he lowers his head.

Moreover, if Jones didn't come from that angle, Allen would have been able to drag the tackler and earn the first down. Being already tackled is completely moot point. Forward progress has not stopped at that moment of Jones tackle. So what do you do if you are the defender? Do you let him have his 1st down? Especially when you CAN tackle him from up front?

Another question is, is Josh Allen [a defenseless player]? NO. He is a runner, and [he also lowered his head, with the balls tucked in his arms.] In this situation, what is a defender to do? How was Jones supposed to tackle him?

Sorry, this is wrong. Allen wasn't wrapped up enough to stop him from moving forward. In fact, it was his force moving forward that initiated the contact. Jones turned sideways to shoulder him as he was taught to do and is not moving at all. If he doesn't make that play Allen's lunge forward gets him a 1st down.

Helmet to helmet is only a penalty on a QB in the pocket and for receivers. On a running play, and Allen was basically a RB at that point, the only penalty for helmets is targeting with the crown of the helmet, which he clearly did not do.

how many games would another team's safety get suspended if they had that same hit on a running Tom Brady?

    2 games? 3?

Not sure where in my post I stated that it was ok for a player to lead with the crown of his helmet. That being said I agree with you, but I don’t think this is what happened. If you watch the play you can clearly see Allen lunging forward(head first ) thus putting his head in the way of a defender to take him down. Jones was going in to stop forward progress, hitting Allen’s helmet was clearly not his intention. Looked to me as if was going to hit him with his shoulder, and both there helmets hit. Not sure how and why you are excusing the offensive player from any wrong doing here. And I’m speaking in general not just this one specific play. QB’s have an option to slide, thus eliminating these types of hits from happening. If you lunge forward with your head down then I think you take chances. The play was definitely penalty worthy. But to be tossed out of game for that type of hit is ridiculous.

I don’t know, how many would they get if they hit Brees, Rodgers or Mahomes? Or are you stating that only Brady would get special treatment? Sometimes i think your Pats hatred cutoff the oxygen supply to your brain.

Again English teacher, I would love for you to give me facts. Not the “everybody knows” crap. And if we are going to correct each other, I would like to read them here. Not “hear” them. But you won’t post crap and you know it. Just the bull you would like to believe to help you sleep better at night and fuel your hate. But please if you can, post here some facts. I would love to read them.
