Well, I've seen weirder things at our QB position (read: Tom Tupa), so sure, why the hell not.

I don't think he would be anywhere near as valuable as a full time qb. If you make him the number two or number three he has to be capable of coming into a game and running the offense. Number two and three guys have enough trouble doing that spending all their time learning how to play qb. I would rather let him keep doing what he does.

I think we might have won that game back then if they had let him finish it.

The 3rd QB is usually dressed but not active, and he can't play until the 4th quarter or something like that. I'm not sure if they changed the rule since 1999, but when Vinny went down on opening day in the first half that year, we used the punter Tom Tupa at QB until the 4th quarter when Rick Mirer came in.

By having Smith as a WR, he can line up at QB without having to commit an extra guy to be another QB and of course be active for the game. I think as he gets older and the other stuff he does becomes less of an option for him, he could end up as a QB, hard to say.

If I am correct, were the Jets to make him the third string QB then he could only play if 1 and 2 go down, thus losing his contributions in other aspects of the game. If I am right then I say no, do not change his designation, if I am wrong then I still would not do it because you could conveivable just carry 2 qb's and maybe use that other roster spot for something else.

This has been brought up a number of times over the years and it's really a moot point. The Jets will carry the normal backup QB's and have Brad Smith anyway.

He's so far removed from the traditional QB role it would be to our disadvantage to even think about practicing him in that role. I like what they do with him now, opposing teams never know what he's going to do.

The question is moot because he's already on our roster and if something were to happen to our QB's he could just step in their anyway.

Maybe if Tory Woodbury was handled this way he could've had a actual career in the NFL.

I'd rather see him more in a 3rd back role then a backup QB.

Didn't Mangini try to get Smith regular reps as a QB in camp one year? Maybe the year we ended up getting Favre, I don't remember. I could swear he got a couple of series in a pre-season game.

Brad Smith may not be an elite #1 QB in the league but for those who have posted that he isn't an accurate enough passer or good enough QB to play #2 either never watched him play QB in college or know nothing about football. Smith in an extremely accurate passer and I have absolutely no doubt he is a better QB then Clemens in ever phase of the game. That being said, he may have more worth to the jets in his current role as an all around player. I'm of the belief that Jets should just carry 2 qb's and use him as an emergency QB if both get hurt.

Yeah at one point he was practiced and used at QB. In 2007 preseason he played and won. During that year he was listed higher on the depth chart as a QB rather then WR. Mangini thought he could be a actual traditional QB, but like Vick almost.

It's funny we used to direct snap to Smith in 2007 prior to this Wild Cat craze, we should've named when we had the chance. lol

For all the arguing about the 3rd/"emergency" QB issue, they don't have to list him as that. It's not like he couldn't keep his current listing and be that.

Besides that work-around, that'd be a pretty tough scenario for two QB's to go down in the same game. I mentioned emergency QB in the sense that if that happened, they could choose to stick Smith back there rather than a third stringer (or nobody else if they didn't carry 3 QB's...sometimes teams do not).

Basically, not being mean but this whole thread is ridiculous. It should have never existed in the first place and goes to show what happens when a player makes one play and how people go completely overboard with it.

When he spoke to the camera, he said all he wanted was one more legit chance at competing for a starting job. What he accepted was that it was the middle of August and everybody's ready to go into the season with the backups they've got. The only way Clemens is back here next year is if he can't even get an offer at a similar price tag to go somewhere like Cleveland, where the head coach who drafted him currently coaches, or Minnesota, where Favre will probably retire on the spot if they lose here monday night.

And the real benefit, for those of you who seem to be completely missing the point of the exercise, is that you free up a roster spot. In case you haven't noticed, we've cut a number of players just in the last couple weeks, some of whom are scoring touchdowns for the Patriots. It's nice to be able to keep more guys around

We don't need to draft a young guy, we've got a 23 year old franchise QB. So the best options for a second quarterback are, you bring in a new old guy like Brunell every year or two, or you just let Brad Smith, who's on the team anyway and I'm sure knows the offense about as well as anybody, be the quarterback if Sanchez misses some time.
