I think you're right, Steve. It's the 'emergency QB' that has all the restrictions. As long as 3rd QB is part of the active roster on game day, he can play at any time and leave at anytime, just like in a pre-season game. I could be wrong but thats what I know.
He wouldn't be the #3 QB. Brunell would be the #3 QB. If something were to happen to Sanchez in the first 3 quarters, Smith would come in, hand the ball off, and run some version of the offense, just as Tom Tupa did in the Vinny game in 1999. The only way this makes any sense at all is if the Jets add someone to their practice squad they really like to be a show-team quarterback. But I don't have faith in Mark Brunell to be the quarterback if Sanchez gets hurt, and Sanchez has gotten hurt in the past. When we carried 4 QBs AND Smith last year, there's no reason to go down to 2 and Smith this year. Someone who knows the system who actually has a live arm has to be on the roster. I have more confidence in Clemens and maybe Ainge than I do in Brunell. O'Connell I've barely seen, so I can't judge him. But Brunell was washed up years ago. I like Brunell as a #3 QB with experience. I don't like him as the only backup.
A shit article from a shit reporter. Anyone who has seen BS play QB knows that he is not a viable option over Clemens. Like was said earlier, he is taking reps to improve his wildcat skills. He will never be a pure QB. He's our slash and we love him for it.
I'm not sure what game it was but I rember watching Miami last year, and they had Pat White listed as their #2 and their #3 qb went in and he was not able to go into the game. Or maybe it was the other way around. Does anyone remember what exactly happened?
From nfl.com: There's a huge difference between "the number three quarterback on the depth chart" and the "third (emergency) quarterback." Smith wouldn't dress as the emergency quarterback.
This. Point being that Brad Smith won't be taking Eric Ainge or Kevin O'Connell's job this season. Some beat writers/bloggers are just scraping the bottom of the barrel before the season starts.
