Wait....so a rookie QB outplayed Brett Favre 2 years in a row? If Rex's team was really Mangini's team but with a rookie QB, I guess that's what you're saying.....Mangini's team under Sanchez outgunned the same Mangini team under Brett Faver, with Rex Ryan having nothing to do with it. I never knew that! Thanks.
Mangini's team with 7 new starters in 2009 which increased to 12 by 2010? Mangini's team with a defense that was ranked 16th his last year but 1st and 3rd respectively the next 2 years under Rex? I loved Mangini as much as the next guy and thought he should have never been fired but let's not pretend he was the reason we went to back to back AFCCGs.
Mezzavo, I see that you changed your avatar. Many thanks for keeping the "Green Guy" for as long as you did.
I believe that Mangini DID build the foundation or core of those teams. He brought in the veteran leaders and had the team playing disciplined, smart football. It's a known fact that when a players coach follows a strict disciplinarian that the players hate, that players coach always enjoys a bump for a year or two and the team performs at a higher level, then by year 3 things start going to shit. That's exactly what happened with the Jets.
You bet, my friend! I figured, after he watched this poo filled season from Heaven, I would let him rest in peace and put up a good ole' stand by of the 80's era Jets helmet...he would definitely understand. How are you doing my man? Haven't seen you since the San Diego game a whole bunch of years back!
After 27 years we moved to Florida. It makes for shorter flights to visit our granddaughter, Mikes one and only in New York. Still watch every game at a local pub that has a Jet room. Don't get into much posting about the players, but I'm beginning to see the slowdown (minor) in my key OL guys, DBrik and Mangold. I think Kerley has a good chance to upgrade this year based on his play in the later games. On the D side I love Snacks and Mo. Think that Cro might help for a year. Harris has lost a step but his smarts cover most situations adequately. Dump Vick and Simms and get a vet to back up Geno while we hopefully fill out CB and OL needs and watch this new Coaching Staff for teaching and some progress. I can survive another year and hope a decent QB will be drafted then.
Mangini had Favre, a great Oline, playmakers, and loads of talent on D. yet neither his offense nor defense was better than avg, and the team flat out wouldn't play for him. prideful veterans quit in the worst way. that has everything to do with the HC. Ryan took the same team, with a rook QB instead of the HOF QB, and had the best run game and D in the league. and instead of quitting late in year, they were winning playoff games. that also has everything to do with the HC. simple fact, 'Mangini's team' never won in the playoffs and they quit in December two straight years. He doesn't get any credit for the teams success in 09 or 10.
What's funny is Mangini built the foundation here, but couldn't take that extra step. Rex comes in, and takes the same team to the AFCCG two years in a row. One of Rex's downfalls was that the majority of the talent that was here from the Mangini era was gone, and he couldn't do much afterwards. Let's hope Bowles can make this a legit deep playoff team year in and year out.
The GM acquires the players, and the HC gets them to play to best of their ability. Mangini was responsible for the latter, and failed at that. Tanny made some really good moves, but ultimately failed miserably at QB decisions (especially in 2012). that's why he was fired. Mangini was fired as the talent Tanny successfully acquired didn't play nearly to their capability....especially in December.
So...teams should alternate HC's every few years? Maybe the nfl should start a coach-sharing thing, where a-holes like Coughlin swap out with guys like Rex every 2 years. You do realize the winner of the last SB (and possibly the last 2 SBs) is the most player-friendly coach the nfl has ever seen, right?
I'm liking all the things I'm hearing out of the new guard, however I've been a Jets fan for far to long to anoint anyone till i can finally place an order on some championship memorabilia. Does sound like we are poised for an upturn though. Make it happen new guard!
Peter King was on Joe and Evan, and was very high on Bowles. He said that he thinks Bowles is better at getting the most out of talent, and he would have done a better job and possibly won more games with the Jets defense this year. Could be all crap, but it sounded good.
It's all bullshit till it ain't. I'll say it again...kudos to Woody for cleaning house. Hopefully Bowles (and Mac) gets some breathing room to do right by my team.
Bowles' attitude is extremely encouraging. I just think we're not going to see the Bowles vision immediately. This year Bowles will get his first up close look at the roster, but it'll likely take the entire year to flush out who fits in and who doesn't. I don't expect the Jets to have a roster that reflects Bowles vision until year two at the earliest, possibly year three.
Plus one. I'm encouraged by what appears to be an acknowledgement by Woody that he made mistakes, needed to be better, and to do a better job himself. I finally feel like we're not at a disadvantage because of him and his cluelessness. Finally we can at least start on a solid foundation...and maybe get lucky here and there and finally things go our way. It's a start anyway...
If the Pats get the shaft for deflategate I think we'll hear a different story from Peter Penis Eater
