    some things to note:

people saying kimo is going to get a run for his money..no he's not, theres only two places he's running; either the dt spot with robertson, mosely and pioha or to the unemployment line because theres no gurantee he's not a june cut..

also on bowens..im just gonna show some raw info and tell me what this might say about our upcoming defensive scheme..

    David Bowens
    6'3
    265 lbs
in the 4-3 system as a backup "situational" rusher he had 22.5 sacks in 6 seasons..

    Bryan Thomas
    6'4
    266 lbs
in the 4-3 system he had 6.5 sacks in 5 years as a backup..

kenyon coleman is a player who played in the 3-4 scheme as a hybrid backing up ware and spears in dallas..see any links here?

kenyon is going to be our starting de if haynes doesnt beat him out, either way its one of them.. the signing of bowens tells you barton is moving inside next to vilma (and as much as i'd have loved us to draft jon beason for that spot, he fits the role nicely) with bryan thomas and bowens coming off the edges.. kassell and hobson will be mixed in nicely, im sure there will be a roation of sorts with these linebackers but barton will definitely be losing pt to bowens.. i like the move.

^Wasn't Barton already inside, why no mention of Hobson?

Watch for Bowens to rush oposite BT AND line up on the oponents strong side when we play KC types ( Gonzalas, etc). Not so much to cover but to force the elite tight ends to stay home and block or else help carry their QB into the locker room for xrays. The best way to nuturalize elite tight ends is to force the coach to keep them on the line to help stop a 265lb freight train baring down on the franchise QB.

barton will be on this team in 08. what bowens gives us is depth at olb which we didnt have. 3-4 d's call for rotations in lb and dl personell constantly. great signing and do not be surprised if we still snag someone day 1

We def'n needed this...we need more pressure on the qb, at times last year we were horrible at it. This signing addresses a huge concern for our defense. He'll make his mark this year, I'm sure of it.

I think we've done a good job adding contributors to both sides of the ball. This years draft we can truly focus on getting the BPA, although its hard to ignore the need to bring another young corner, a backup guard and tackle...

Exactly. This is going to make the draft more focused. I'm really excited about the way this team is shaping up.

barton is very reliable, but not someone i would cry over losing...kimo shouldn't be worried, he should be cut...great depth now...great competition...now we just need a good draft...nice off-season so far...

The pass rush was a big problem last year. Now we have someone to finally replace John Abraham. My guess is Bowens will become basically a 3rd down and long player to spell Ellis. Bryan Thomas can come off the other edge, D-Rob up the middle and we have a pretty decent 3-man rush.

The thing about a scheme like we have is that you need lots of good (not necessarily great) football players. It's a well-known fact that defensive line is one of the most exhausting positions to play and teams have been known to use 8-man rotations. Now we have that flexibility in our front 7. My hope is for a masher guard and future RT in this draft. CB, S, DT would also be great additions...

it's nice to see we beat out the Pats in this signing.

i think we may still draft an OLB early. it's not like we're signing young guys; so we can still draft someone to groom without throwing them into the fire and steepening the learning curve.

it's a pretty good signing and disguises our first pick even more.

    cheers

I would much rather have Barton inside then Hobson. Barton is a beast, and has the attitude to fit the bill. He has been consistent for us, and I dont understand all the hate for him.

The draft is going to be interesting... I think we are going straight offense come draft time.

Barton is older, his salary doesn't help make the argument in his favor, and Hobson was consistent in his play last year. Barton is prone to stupid penalties at the most inoportune times. I believe that Hobson's size is also perfect when you're talking ILB.

I'll take Hobson over Barton in a heartbeat.

Yea, I agree. I think Hobson rivaled Thomas as our best LB last year. He also showed some quickness I didn't think he had (he came into camp in great shape), plus he was involved in sacks and takeaways more so than ever before.
