I'm not a huge NO fan and surprisingly think Brees is highly over rated. That said this not very good 8 & 8 team went 6 & 2 at home putting up 31 on Carolina in a loss at home and 27 on MN in a loss at home. They scored on everyone on their home field and big.

I usually agree with most of what you say, but I just can't here. The Titans are without Haynesworth, but the Jets have lost Favre and Coles and, for this game, won't have Pace either. Collins is streaky (trust me on this) and can come out and be amazing one week and terrible the next. If he doesn't get pressured much, it probably leans more towards the former than the latter.

Houston is winnable only if you can get pressure. The Jets are without their best 2 passrushers for this game and Schaub, if he's actually healthy, is a good QB and has an excellent WR in Andre Johnson to work with. Winnable? Absolutely. Will it be easy? No way in hell.

And I don't know where you see the Pats game as a 50% chance of a win. Their secondary is the weakness of their defense whilst the weakness of the Jets offense is their WR corps, they aren't poised to take advantage of that weakness. Pursuing that line of logic is the fact that the strength of the Jets offense, the running game, plays to the strength of the Pats defense.

I foresee a 1-3 start becoming 2-3 after they beat Miami. I think 3-1 is just too optimistic.

I'm sure he was just trying to make a point that we aren't going to be very good this real, but 0-5 is really not very likely.

Some simple probablility. Assuming that every game in the NFL is winnable under the right circumstances, then all that varies is the probablility. We could build a model based on a whole bunch of factors, but lets just simplify and make some assumptions about "winability"

Team: Chance of winning (I'm being conservative)
    Houston: 40%
    Patriots: 5%
    Ten: 30%
    NO: 35%
    Miami: 45%

    This predicts:
    0-5: 6% chance (i.e. not very likely)

I think its in reality about as likely we win the superbowl as we go 0-5. Neither is very likely to happen. However a sportwriter can come out an say I believe the Jets will go 0-5 and people think, that sound reasonable because we don't have Pace for 4 games. come on.

    The facts are:
    Pros:
    Sheppard > Law/Lowery
    Scott > Harris > Barton

    Cons:
    Cotchery < Coles
    Ghost <<<< Pace

    Even:
Rookie Ryan = Mangina (we still have shotty and weshoff)
Anchient Favre = Rookie Sanchez (Favre was a liability in the beginning and end of the season)

Just so I clear the air here. The teams that I'm 100% certain will beat us, will be the Patriots and Saints.

Here's why. They both run the spread offense very well. It's tough to blitz and cover 3-4 wide receiver sets, especially with the weakness we've shown in our secondary this pre-season. I'm hoping the kind of play we got from Sheppard will not carry over into the regular season. Otherwise, both of those games will be tough to watch with all the weapons those teams have.

The Titans rely on the running game and as little Kerry Collins as possible. That's their bread and butter which plays to the strength of the Jets Run D. The Texans are an injury away from another .500 or less season. Even if Schaub is in, their Defense is pretty horrible. Texans fans are already worried their D will make Mark Sanchez look like a future HOF. How many of us have said the same exact thing about Trent Edwards? Shaun Hill? in last couple of years?

The Dolphins will be a tough game, for sure. But we get everybody back that game. It's a Monday Night Football broadcast, Rex vs Crowder soundbytes will be played, Divisional Rivalry, it's gonna be a good one. I expect our defense to be firing on all cylinders and take it to Chad.

Who's the say we go on to beat the Texans, and we go and beat the Patriots by a point or FG in a close home opener? What if the team starts not only buys into this Rex Ryan system but honestly start believing they can win any game they play this year? Is there even another level above swaggerlicious? Honestly believe momentum will carry this team, but they need to come out of the gate winning. Houston is where it's at.

Who is this guy? Paul McGuire(In 1986 Jets were 10-0 and looking unbeatable
McGuire predicted on the air we would lose our next 6 games and damn if we didn't do it!)Look with a rookie HC and a rookie QB we should all be happy with a 2-2 start. The loss of Pace and Gholston filling in for him will let teams run on him from dawn till dusk.Let's hope Sanchez is the next rookie QB to have sucsess in his 1st NFL season.

Alright, now I see better where you're coming from. I think the Titans game is the most winnable game of the bunch. I'm assuming Jenkins will be healthy and shut down their running game again, that's why I think getting pressure on Collins is key. Revis is actually somewhat wasted in this game as the Titans don't have one great WR to key on and take away thus I think it's through taking it to Collins you win this game.

As far as the Texans go I think it boils down to protecting Sanchez and pressuring Schaub. Keep in mind that Demeco (sp?) Ryans, Mario Williams, and Amobi Akoye are good defensive players and can get into the defensive backfield. Their corners, outside of Robinson, aren't great and should afford Sanchez opportunities, but keep in mind that they have a pretty good front 7 and this could be the difference maker.

It seems like we're looking at the same things but taking more optimistic/pessimistic approaches.

Actually. I have no worries at all about the new season. I think way too much focus is on our new QB and it shouldn't be. All of the focus should be on the Defense. The play of the Defense will dictate how we ultimately do in our first 4 or 5 games or even for the whole season for that matter. We need some sleepers to step up early on in the season and produce; that is the main story. We also need Lito Sheppard to not get called for interference after interference. So far, I have not been real impressed with his play. The good news is we have Revis on the other side of the field who doesn't get picked on often. Now, all that has to be done is figure out how to cover the weaker half of the field.

Make no mistake, this year is all about the play of the defense. If they play bad we will get L after L. If they really play how I think they are capable of we will have a puncher's chance at the playoffs, and that is all I will say on that.

I like Sanchez, but I am not eyeing him as having a ton of weight on him to produce big-time. He is learning. I expect conservative, ball control, Offence for the first part of the year. Depending on how Sanchez progresses, Shcotty might open things up as things go on. Our running game has to be huge this year. We have a great offensive line and they are getting paid big bucks so let's open some holes for TJ, Leon, and Greene to run through.

These are the keys to this year: Defense first followed by the play of our Offensive line.

Well if the Jets just stacked plays so every single play was a naked reverse to Leon Washington with everybody going the other way then he'd rush for 534 yards a game and break the alltime single season record by game 4 or so. Obviously in that situation they'd by 5-0 by game 5.

Actually, I think Jets were 10-1 and on a 9 game winning streak when he said they were the worst 10-1 team he'd ever seen. And he was right. I always liked Maguire and Marv Albert calling the games.

I think you are right and I think he also said we wouldn't make the playoffs and I think we didn't.

Nm..we did make the playoffs and won our first game too. Then lost to the Browns in the infamous Gastineau late hit debacle.

I said in an earlier thread that 2-3 would have to be considered a good start, given all of the issues (the schedule, Ryan, Sanchez, Pace, Ellis, etc.), but 0-5 would mean that pretty much everything has gone wrong, which is unlikely.

My fear for this defense is that while I LOVE agressive defense - I'm wondering if we will be too agressive relative to the talent...

Looked to me like The Ravens could have dinked and dunked us all day... Screen passes would seem to kill us with Gholston spinning in circles....

Then BAM - every once in a while a Rex all out blitz will get burned by a Brady deep.

This team is a work in progress - I also fear for a tough start and have said so....

That said - I haven't seen Crazy Optimism for THIS YEAR - yeah optimism for rex - yeah, hope for Sanchez - Year people would love for us to one day be the ravens D...

But, I don't see too many media or fans declaring playoffs or anything...

Even Greeny on M and M was joking about the playoffs being a pipe dream....

yeah 0-5 is probably more realistic than the playoffs - But, beat it Mr Know it all Writer - Jets fans are realistic and pessimistic as can be - we don't need you to tell us about some bogus optimism you set up for your article

Who cares what Mike Greenburg said? He also said that the Jets don't have any game-changing talent on offense. The guy is a retard.

To bad no ones giving the Jets a chance to make the playoff's. Even the media that are Jet fans don't have the balls to say it, we are a playoff contender. That's why this is BS, the media loves Rex but not the Jets because if you say it, you get laughed it. This is just anti NY media garbage
