The Bible says to stone adulterers. Since I'm 100% sure none of you have stoned anyone and most people know of at least one such person, does that mean there isn't a single adulterer on this forum?
Why are we pretending like religious groups are different than any other group? Why is it that being a member of a religious group that commits 99% of suicide bombings in the world is any different than being a member of the KKK or another organization like that Just because your organization is supposedly rooted in belief of divinity doesn't mean it can't be judged by the actions of it's followers
This is apples to oranges. You're comparing a violent criminal act (in a country with a separation of church and state) with a non-violent one. A better comparison would be comparing these "not strict Muslims" with Jews who don't observe the Sabbath. The latter are not true followers of Judaism, just like these Muslims are not true followers of Islam (i.e. not true Muslims). I once observed real Muslims at JFK. They looked like dudes you usually see in some footage from the mountains of Afghanistan - long beards, robes, etc. They rolled out their mini carpets right on the floor of the terminal's waiting area and began praying. Can't question their religious affiliation..
Which country is that? I live in a country where we have laws like no liquor sales early on Sundays (Christian), no selling cars on Sundays (Christians), people trying to ban abortions because of their religious faith (Christians). People are constantly shoving their religion into politics. For fucks sake, one of the East Coast states just passed a law mandating the offering of a class on teaching the Christian faith. Separation of church and state is a myth in this damn country.
I think this is right. Somehow we're blinded by the religious aspect of it. Maybe if we think of the Koran as a Danielle Steel novel, and the terrorists as just a book club. Would it be so wrong if we profiled the whole bunch of horned-up, middle-age, whale-tail women? If they're reading Danielle's stuff as suggesting mass slaughter between sessions with the 19 year-old pool boy, I think we should take their word for it. If we hear about an older woman running into a movie theater screaming "MY HUSBAND NEVER GOES DOWN ON ME!!" before exploding, it just saves time that we can focus in on the book club filled with older, hirsute, fat-bottom women. Is it ALL Danielle Steel fans blowing up innocent people? Well, no. But the fact that all the ones who do seem to identify themselves just helps us identify the problem. Nobody is even saying we need to do away with Danielle Steel - although we do. We're just saving time by identifying the next likely exploders, is all.
You almost made a great analogy but somehow you let it get away from you. The KKK was founded on "Christian principles;" surely you've seen the crosses burning and the logo with the cross. But somehow it got away from that and they even burned Christian churches. albeit those serving a darker complected constituency. The klan murdered people to further their "Christian" ideals. Until you are ready to destroy all Christians for the actions of the KKK you cannot be ready to destroy all Muslims for the actions of the ISIL jihadis.
pardon the rambling.... For the past 13 years I've taken my wife to Paris each spring Apr/May. This year we had to go earlier and we just got back from there less than a week ago. The French Parliment had issued a 'state of emergency' after the November attacks (Eagles of Death Metal, etc.) and just extended it again which will last--barring another extension--until late May. Essentially the state of emergency expands police powers to carry out arrests and searches and allows authorities to restrict the movements of people and vehicles at specific times and places. Needless to say, many civil rights groups are ticked off about it. Fwiw, we did come across posted "notices" advising of the possibility of restricted movement into areas/sections where police activity might be involved (e.g. demonstrations). Additionally, John Kerry was also there for some Syria-related talks with Euro officials. The place we stay at (le Bristol) is literally down the street from the President's mansion and while we in the past could walk down the street past the guarded palace (albeit on the other side of the street), there were a couple of days this year where the street was closed altogether and on one occassion we saw a pretty fair-sized motorcade of about 8-10 cars with motorcycles fore and aft of it in serious "get the fuck outta the way s'il vous plaît" mode. The missus had to open her pocketbook once for inspection while entering a Decathalon sporting goods store but it was a quick look-see, nothing heavy-handed; obviously things will have been amped up after yesterday. And while there's a very visible police-with-automatic-weapons presence there (which might make some people feel better), the fact is it doesn't really mean squat if someone's hell bent on seeing 72 virgins. That said, had a great time as always and lucked out weather-wise. As for Belgium/Brussels, their administrative landscape is a hodge-podge, fractured mess of a mosaic and the EU ease of border crossing doesn't help their already 2nd-rate security/intelligence infrastructure's case. While accepting Muslim migrants (all well and good) Belgium didn't read the tea leaves years back by taking the more extremist strains (e.g. the group Sharia4Belgium) seriously enough which allowed them to gain the foothold they enjoy today.
Kinda like the chick version of the dude who wrote those Fifty Shades of Grey things. Except a chick. And therefore suffering from wild and violent mood swings, nonsensical screaming and a desire to destroy innocent and unsuspecting men everywhere. It's really a very apt comparison.
I know a white guy who smokes weed. Must mean all white guys smoke weed. Some Jets fans once got caught on video harassing women after a game. All Jets fans must be mysoginist pigs. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Well, see, now you don't sound so smart. And that's just a shame. I thought you were going somewhere with this. I've been let down before, but I had higher hopes here. The issue, of course, isn't what groups we blame and how we might hurt their feelings. After all, why the fuck would that matter? Sweet as it is to ache for the innocent non-blower-uppers, the real issue is whether or not we want to be serious about finding the culprits of an incident of mass terror. Or, better still, stopping the next culprit before he kabooms something or someone. We ought not be so delicate about profiling. Profiling is good. Profiling works. That's all anyone is doing here. So, no, it's not about hanging the sins of a few terrorists on an entire religion. It's about efficiently narrowing the field of suspects.
Haha drunk when I posted so yeah, the KKK thing was not a good example. How about this. Why are the liberals so reticent to suggest that just maybe Islam has a terrorist problem but blaming Trump for violence at his rallies is just fine?
The problems is that polls show that the views of Muslims are skewed towards violence and being supportive of it. For whatever reason, it's true. For example 35% of Muslims in France believe that suicide bombings are justified at least sometimes. That's kiiiiiinda a big deal. So just because 1% are actually doing it they are emboldened by a culture that supports it. Do you think that 35% of Christians or Jews support suicide bombings sometimes?
