I'm pretty sure it was a torn ACL both times. It happened like 6 games into 2009 and I remember being so super hyped about him coming back in 2010 and then he got plowed over on one of the first plays of that 1st game against the Ravens and tore it again. The only true studs Rex had in 2009/2010 were Revis and David Harris; MAYBE Sean Ellis, although his best years were behind him. Mike Devito, Calvin Pace and Cromartie were solid players, but I wouldn't call them studs. Bart Scott was solid but out of his prime, same with Bryan Thomas. Rex's defenses pretty much relied on a shutdown corner and big pressure from the dline combined with exotic blitzing schemes. The Bills didn't even have a corner in the top 25 (per PFF), and were built for 4-3, so I can see why the defense declined and their front 7 was only ranked 23rd this year. They also lost Mario Williams.
As if one single play is the reason they lost a 60+ minute game. Maybe if they didn't allow Ajayi to rush for 206 yards on 32 rushes, they wouldn't have lost. Take away his 57 yard rush and he still had 149 yards on 31 rushes (4.81 yards per carry). That's pathetic. How about not a single sack against Miami? That sure had nothing to do with it. But yea, I'm sure it was just that one single play that made them lose.
Last week I was traveling through Western NY on Christmas Eve so I was listening to the Buffalo Bills pregame show. Their color commentator is Mark Kelso a former safety of theirs. He had some tough words about Rex & Rob. He said in that early Jets-Bills TNF game where we beat them and Fitzpatrick and the passing offense looked like juggernauts, that the Jets ran the exact same passing play 22 times. They used slightly altered variations, switched to the other side a few times and masked the formation a little but he said it was the same passing play over and over all night and Rex & Rob could not adjust. that's the kind of stuff that gets you fired. Fitzpatrick 24-34, 374 yards 1 TD in that game btw. dog shit the rest of the season
Maybe if they didn't suck on defense the whole game, it wouldn't have gone to OT in the first place. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
We pick up espn 550 up here, listening to Bills talk radio is pure comedy. Even the worst people on this site have nothing on Schope and the bulldog.
Rex Ryan defenses don't suck. His players didn't execute, he had too many injuries and the GM didn't provide him enough talent. Did I miss any excuses?
Exactly why the Rex Ryan signing was a round peg square hole type of deal which really made absolutely no sense for either side. They had the best front 4 in the NFL under Jim Schwartz including 3 players with double digit sacks. Enter Rex and they ended up with in the 20's of sacks the following year. Mangini was the architect of Rex's defenses that focused on players that fit the scheme and played together. Exactly what we've been lacking for years here. Similar to what I alluded to in the San Francisco Giants not having superstars but a bunch of good players that know their role. Mangini was great at finding players to fit their niche.
I don't have any problem with Buffalo firing Rex. I'm not sure it's smart, but it's their team they can do whatever they want. But I do think the GM and Owner are major-league POS for firing him a week before the season ended. The only reason they did that is because they were terrified that the Bills would beat us and have a .500 record on the season (where their best player was hurt the whole year and they have a shit QB) ... and instead, they felt it would be far, far easier to fire him with a 7 wins & 8 losses record. They could see Rex being interviewed after being fired and him saying "They can fire me, but I'm proud that I never had a losing season with the Bills." The ownership took a cowards way out and that's shameful, imho. If I'm Rex, I'd do anything in my power to get the Rutgers HC job (or even Syracuse). I'd tell everyone that would listen that my dream job would be to be a Big 10 coach. I'd start making high school recruiting contacts right now. I'd offer to do it for a $1 for the first year. He's tailor-made for that job and nobody would even care if he lost. He could go 7-5 every season (and a terrible bowl invitation) for the next 20 years and the school's fanbase would love him for it.
Rex would probably be an awesome NCAA HC, but I don't think he can give up the NFL ghost. He wants to win the trophy that his father couldn't.
That's an interesting thought- Rex going to the college game. I agree he would be good at it. All he does is kiss players' asses, that will play well in recruiting with entitled high school kids that would eat that up. there is not enough defense being played and emphasized in the NCAA, so I actually hope he does go there. maybe he becomes Pete Carroll, mediocre NFL HC that washed out of 2 places, goes to the college game and dominates to get another shot in the NFL.
average HC, but HOF defensive resume (which is what i think mattered most to Buddy), including multiple rings.. I don't think any of the Ryan's are NCAA material. they need to coach adults, not kids. If Rex goes anywhere outside the NFL, better off in the booth. He'd be a natural goofing with the other knuckleheads on the pre and post game. I'd prefer to see him return to coaching D though, just in the NFC...
Bart Scott: "We can't put your playbook in crayon." http://da.radio.cbssports.com/2016/...l-dareus-we-cant-put-your-playbook-in-crayon/ Bart Scott was never a player I liked very much, but the man has a gift with words.
