When has a QB for the Bills played well after getting a stupid large deal?

    This is a delirious take.

“The money qbs are getting is ridiculous.” How do you figure that when they are the lifeblood of the team and the catalyst to having a chance to win anything? They get what they deserve. Finding a franchise qb is worth its weight in gold in today’s nfl.

“You don’t even need to win a super bowl or be a top 10 player.” You do realize that Allen is a top 10 player right? He was ranked top 10 (I believe 7?) and he came in #2 in league MVP, ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. If you’re talking more about guys like Dak, then again, qbs of that level are worth their weight in gold.

“Veterans giving years to the game” makes no sense. Is that how people are rewarded? They are rewarded for their play. If they were any good they’d get big contracts too. Don’t even understand your point here or how it’s relevant.

Not a delirious take, just different to yours.

My wording did suggest that I didn't think Allen was a top ten QB and I do apologise for that - I think he is a really, really good young quarterback as well. But my point was that you don't need to be a top ten player to get a huge deal these days. Players like Kirk Cousins, Carson Wentz, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr are on north of $20 million per year. That's 11 per cent of their teams' caps for players who are NOT top ten guys and have never won Super Bowls. Are they 'franchise QBs'? I don't think so, but at some point their teams thought maybe they might be and had no choice but to pay a huge amount to find out.

My comment about veterans is not simply our of sympathy for them (although I do feel sympathy) but out of frustration that the quality of football being played is deteriorating because solid, capable veterans are losing out to cheaper rookies in order, in part, to service the huge cap hits of the game's superstars, mostly the QBs. 'If they were any good they'd have big contracts too' is a bit silly - there are only so many big contracts available, and the mid-tier players, who can still make a big impact on their team, are getting squeezed out.

That's why I think it's relevant. It's okay that you disagree, but I'm not delirious.

I see, and thank you for clarifying. Yeah, those contracts for above average QB's are a tough pill to swallow. As a fan, IMO, if my team doesn't have a franchise QB, I'd rather them keep trying to find one instead of paying guys like that. I know that's easy for me to say from the couch while the owners have a business to run and tickets to sell, and the coaches want to remain competitive, but that's how I feel.

I dont agree that Allen is better than Mahomes, but to say that he may be is not crazy, IMO. As a side note, and this is just my opinion, I dislike comparing QB's by using wins and super bowls because there are so many other variables at play. I use this a lot with my opinion that Peyton Manning is a better QB than Tom Brady (I dont want to derail this thread onto that topic) but I think when one QB has the greatest coach of all time controlling the defense, it isn't really fair to factor that into their on the field quarterbacking play. In the same vein, Mahomes has won a Super Bowl, but Andy Reid is a HOF coach, Travis Kelce may finish, and probably will finish, as the best TE of all time, and the list continues on with how good that Chiefs team is. Obviously Allen doesnt have that. I prefer to compare them just on the field and how they play at the QB position. Here are last year's stats:

Josh Allen 2020 Season Patrick Mahomes

    396 Completions 390
    572 Pass Attempts 588
    69.2% Completion % 66.3%
    4,544 Passing Yards 4,740
    37 Passing Touchdowns 38
    6.5% Touchdown Percentage 6.5%
    10 Interceptions 6
    1.7% Interception Percentage 1.0%

Plus when you factor in rushing, Allen had 8 TD's and almost 500 yards. Mahomes 2 TD's and 300 yards.

I think Mahomes had 50 td's the year before, last year Allen had 46 or 47. I think Mahomes is clearly the better player, but I dont think its "crazy" to project them as similar players or say that Allen might be better. He might be, I just disagree with that at this time. There really isn't anything Mahomes does that Allen doesn't do. Also, Allen finished ahead of Mahomes as MVP last year.

QB cap exclusion or some sort of Bird Rights exception seem like they're coming. I'm not sure exactly how the rest of the NFLPA would take this but in the end it'd help the rest of the teams. The Bird Rights thing seems like the best option.

I believe that allows team to exclude X amount of dollars from their cap for re-signing a player they drafted. Not the whole enchilada but a good portion of it. It's going to be very interesting to see how Allen and Mahomes' careers pan out after taking up 20%+ of their teams cap in some of these years.

If you want to compare only one singular season, yeah it doesn't seem crazy. But body of work is more important.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/A/AlleJo02.htm

Not to mention Mahomes has won a SB, SB MVP, MVP, 3 Pro Bowls, 1x All Pro, etc. Allen has made one Pro Bowl.

The problem with body of work is it doesn't factor in progression. Mahomes came out of the gate at this level, Allen needed time. The point is to analyze the level they are on now and where they might ultimately end up. Averaging the years where Allen was not elite does not really help when analyzing where they both may end up in the future. Everyone reporting on the Bills camp is saying Allen took yet another jump from last year and McDermott and the bills defense cannot stop him in camp. Again, I'm just saying we don't really know where they will both end up, they are on a similar level now, and who knows who will progress or not. I'm just saying that if someone is suggesting Allen could ultimately end up better, I dont think that's "crazy" to say. I would disagree with that because I think the Chiefs are better set up for success with Reid and Kelce, but who knows. Mahomes wasn't as good last year as he was the year prior, and Kelce will be 32 this year. I hope the two teams meet up again in the playoffs, it will be fun to watch. The bills as a team have a lot of catching up to do, but Allen and Mahomes are awesome to watch.

That's a dumb way to look at things? Mahomes has been better for three out of three years. Allen has gotten better each year, but so far his lone excellent season with a high completion percentage and good accuracy is the outlier to the other two.

I like Allen. He's a good player and a good kid. But there's no comparison. Mahomes can throw 26 TDs/12 interceptions for the next 5-6 years, retire and he's probably Canton bound. Allen has a lot more work to do.

I can't blame this Bills fan. If we had a QB that had that good of a season, even though he sucked the prior 2, we would be ready to carry him on our shoulders to Canton

Everything broke right for the Bills last year. 5-1 in one score games, no major injuries or anything and they didn't really do a lot to improve their team. They focused all of their off-season resources on defending Mahomes.

First two picks on edge rushers and they're rolling with the same offensive line that produced that awful running game that was boosted by Allen's running ability.

They're due for a step back and if Allen doesn't have an unbelievable season where he connects on a lot of those ridiculously good roll to his right off platform throws they're going to miss the playoffs.

I expect a step back for Allen. I like him a lot but don't see him replicating last year.

The Bills might take a step back, but they have the advantage of continuity and an above average season from their QB while the other 3 teams are banking on completely unproven guys at the position. The Pats might challenge them if Cam plays like the Carolina version pre 2019. I expect Tua and Wilson to have their share of growing pains and Jones as well if he plays.

They do but I actually expect the Pats to possibly take the division. Belichick has never had to spend like he did in free agency so I have to believe that he's going to fashion it into something. They were within a stones throw and a couple breaks of being +.500 last year with the worst QB play in the league after week 3. Cam sort of has to be better.

Allen was ridiculous last year but I sort of believe he played to his ceiling. Not to see he can't even replicate that again, but I don't think he gets much better. The amount of falling away to his right/getting hit and chucking the ball into a perfect spot was fucking ridiculous last year.

He sucked in his 2nd year? He won 10 games, scored 29 touchdowns to 9 int's, took his team to the playoffs, and was voted as a top 100 player in the league after the season LOL.

Josh Allen played like absolute crap vs. KC in the playoffs last year.

Buffalo just won the 1st playoff games since dating back to 1995 of 25 years and it took a Covid 19 tainted season (with no fans in the stands) in order to do it.

Josh Allen had a below mediocre game vs KC in the playoffs. Very inaccurate. Wasn't good at all (from start to finish).

He just isn't ready for the pressure of the big stage just yet

(and may never be built for it either).

    • 28/48 (only 58.3%).

Not good (accuracy has always been his question mark).

    • 287 passing yards

(only 5.9 yards per pass attempt, which is awful).

    • 2 TD's/1 INT.

(not going to get the job done vs. an elite QB).

    • Sacked 4x

(needs to learn to throw the ball away instead of trying to be Superman @ QB).

    • QB Rating of only 80.8 (not good).

And 1 of his meaningless TDs came in absolute garbage time too.

Down 38-15 (getting destroyed by 23 points) by the time he finally threw another TD pass (with only 4 minutes remaining).

    He STUNK.

He was also absolutely atrocious during the 2nd half of Houston Texans wildcard loss and completely melted down and folded under postseason pressure. His 2nd half choke job was one of the worst postseason 2nd half performances of All-Time.

So far he's nothing more than a pretty good regular season QB (2020 was tainted because of no fans in the stadium) and overall a mediocre postseason 2-2 QB.

Even Mark Sanchez of 2009-2010 posted much better Playoff numbers than Josh Allen has throughout 2019-2020 and that's a fact.

Josh Allen is no Tom Brady and Buffalo is no N.E.

With pressure of being a contender + rabid fans in the stands while on the road (like KC/Houston) not only will Josh Allen struggle come a normal 2021 atmosphere but his Bills will fall off a 2021 cliff because of it.

Sanchez on the road eliminated Palmer/Rivers/Manning/Brady.

Josh Allen has eliminated a washed up Philip Rivers and a young Lamar Jackson lol (all because of his Buffalo D vs Baltimore too because Allen was mediocre)
    .

    Overrated.

    Patrick Mahomes.
    Deshaun Watson (as a QB).
    Kyler Murray.
Justin Herbert (greatest rookie season ever)..
    Baker Mayfield.
    Lamar Jackson.

I take all of these younger QBs over Josh Allen and all have better QB statistics than "Josh Allen" too.

Playoffs is when it matters most.

And 2nd year Josh Allen put to the most atrocious 2nd half postseason meltdown of All-Time.

2nd year = 85.3 QB Rating (below average) and a completion percentage of only 58.2% (mediocre).

Also wet the bed during a wildcard loss and was 2nd half embarrassing.

    2019 Buffalo Defense =
    #2 in Points allowed.
    #3 in yards allowed.
#3 in QB Rating against (monster Defense).

Stop trying to pretend Josh Allen as a 2nd year QB wasn't carried by the #1 overall NFL Defense (yards allowed/points allowed/QB Rating against combined).

    2019 Buffalo Offense (lol).
    23rd in Points Scored.
    24th in total yards.
24th in QB Rating (Josh Allen).

Please stop acting and pretending as if Josh Allen wouldn't have gone 4-12 (at best) without that fully loaded Defense who carried your overrated QB like a ragdoll.

Josh Allen was 2019 led to the playoffs by Buffalo's defense even moreso than Mark Sanchez was carried by his 2009-2010 defenses.

I dont often resort to personal attacks, but I will not engage with you. You are so unbelievably biased and unobjective with anything to do with josh allen. There is a litany of lies in your posts, and every data point someone mentions to you is screened through your confirmation bias filter. You can have fun dying on your josh allen hill and typing out your angry takes to everyone. I imagine you sitting there in an unlit room with crumbs on your chest as you type these responses in between farts.

    The truth hurts.

But no need for personal attacks. I'm talking about your QB. Not you. And I'm just not a believer in him. Not until I see him do what he did last year but in a non Covid tainted season (with actual fans packing stadiums; when he's on the road).

Josh Allen had an atrocious 2nd half vs. Houston. Horrible.

And 2nd year he led an awful Buffalo offense. That was literally carried into the playoffs @ 10-6 (due to the best overall NFL Defense).

    1st year = awful.
2nd year = mediocre (to average, at best).
3rd year = Covid 19 tainted season with no fans.

@ KC last year = losing 38-15 in the 4th Q (blown out by Patrick Mahomes).

    (losing by 23 points)

Until he finally tossed a (garbage time) TD with only 4 minutes left?

    "Tom Brady".
