Also, did Belichick reach out to the Jets before or after he wrote his 400 page manifesto to Chapel Hill?

Well, it is a fact no one wanted him last year. I mean there is no debate there. He was fired from current job, was available, got one consideration, and finished as 3d candidate there. Now the question is: would he have a job this year? While I concede we will never know, but he took a job in College instead of NFL. In College. That is MUCH lower level than NFL. And he reached out to Woody (this might actually be true as there more than Russini that is reporting). I mean if this is not complete desperation I am not sure what is.

Let me ask you this, just let's be fair and logical. Does anyone accept a job in minor League if he is a good candidate for majors and reaches out to the team he despises in majors to hire him? The answer is no. He is a solid defensive coach who is old. He has a big name made in NFL because of Brady, so in the minor leagues that has weight to get College kids recruited, etc... In NFL right now he has no value.

He's 72 years old and his only real interest was to pass Don Shula on the all time win list. After that goal he was gone. Nobody wanted him including Jerry Jones. He spent over 20 years ragging non the Jets. He despised this team. Enjoy being insignificant at the end of your career.

Well, we can at least point to one good decision that Woody made this year.

I think he got the rail by the league. That's the only way the Jets call makes sense to me. That he reached out to all teams with openings.

LOL. So he called Woody whom he hates and went to NCAA instead of NFL because ... he had a lot of NFL interest? You got it, bub.

He was literally making 100% more in NFL. It's a big step down for him in every way because the NFL doors are closed. You don't call the team you disparaged for 20+ years otherwise and take half a check pay cut to go to lower league otherwise.

woody Johnson has never paid a coach that much

Belichick’s $10 million per year would be top 10 in the NFL among head coaches.

So they are offering him more money than most NFL teams will offer, he’s got a college-aged girlfriend, why not?

    —-

if he waited it out til the offseason hiring cycle he woulda gotten offers

And yet he still called Woody. Again, FOR HIM $10 mil is a huge pay-cut as he was making $20 mil. But you got me with the College aged girlfriend though. What's extra 10 mil when he could be having orgies with 20 year olds right where he works until he croaks? Perhaps a right choice after all. And the only choice.

well no shit he’s taking a paycut. That last contract he signed with NE was unprecedented and more of a thank you for the SBs.

He didn’t call Woody. Allegedly he spoke with Mike Tannenbaum, if you read the articles

I agree. Belichick knew he had no suitors. He did not have any teams last year either. He's 72 years old. When a team hires a head coach they intend to have them around for a decade not a few years. I'm sure he got feedback across the league and knew it was over. His last ditch play was to call the Jets.

Now he will coach in college. I don't know what would be deemed a success there but I suppose if he gets North Carolina into the playoffs then that would be success.

I don’t think Belichick had any NFL options but I think it has less to do with his coaching ability and more to do with some baggage.

He’s 72 and teams want a longer term commitment than what he can probably offer. He doesn’t produce good coaches off his staff for the most part so there wouldn’t be a groomed replacement. He would definitely want some roster control and say in roster decisions and towards the end of his tenure he was pretty bad at making those decisions.

His seemingly gestapo no nonsense style takes some time to build too especially as the generations of football players get richer and softer.

    If he was 63 I don’t think he’d have a problem getting a job.

This story is 100% bull****. I don't care what Russinni and others say.

This reminds me of the time George Costanza got caught in a lie telling the Ross's (his future in-laws that never happened because his fiancee died) that he had a house out in the Hamptons.
When they pretended to believe him, it turns into a game of chicken and he offers to drive them 2 hours from NYC out to his "home in the Hamptons."

It's a question of who would blink first -- and George didn't blink until he drove all the way out there. :D

Same thing here: Bellichik HATES the Jets and Woody in particular (2nd only to Steve Guttman and maybe Eric Mangini). But what better way to irk Woody/Jets than to say in a few years (maybe after he has a successful 2nd Act with another NFL team)..."Hey, I called the Jets and told them I'd have interest but they told me to drop dead."

So....Belichik doesn't REALLY want to coach the Jets but he trolls them and their fans by planting the seed that they could have had him but showed no interest. If the Jets next coach flops....Belichik wins. If Belichik hooks on with another NFL team and wins....or he wins with UNC.....Belichik wins again.

So to prevent Belichik -- who has no interest in coaching the Jets -- from being able to say "Hey, I gave them a shot and they said no"...the Jets feign interest in Belichik in this Game Of Chicken.

Like Mrs. Ross, I expect Woody to shop for a housewarming gift for Belichik to use at UNC. :D

I wonder if Belichik's new digs at UNC have stables for horses....I would LOVE to keep Prickley Pete and Snoopy there !! :D
