Powell has been a steady player. Doesn't cause problems and delivers when he plays. I hope they bring him back.
Bell, Ty Montgomery, Elijah McGuire, Trenton Cannon, Deangelo Henderson Sr., Jalin Moore and Valentine Holmes. Sheesh.
I have loved Powell. Along with Johnny Hector, he has been one of my favorite RBs since Freeman McNeil and Curtis Martin. He has been one of my favorite Jets. He has definitely been a great Jet and solid citizen. On one hand, I'd love to see him back. OTOH, I'd hate to see him endanger the health for the rest of his life. I hope that he'll just retire as a Jet. Whereas I think he could possibly beat out Montgomery and all but Bell, how much longer could he play, a year? Two? At this point, I think I'd rather see the Jets give Montgomery, McGuire, Henderson, Moore, Cannon, and Holmes a chance and see what they can do. I don't hold out much hope for Cannon or Holmes, and probably not Henderson either, but I think it's time to look forward, not backwards We need to find players who can help us for a longer period of time. In addition, a 3rd string RB ought to have some value on STs and I don't think that Powell does.
If Powell is healthy signs and plays to me it is a sign that Gase is trying to rid himself of Mac's depth type picks. Letting Leggitt go, probably Cannon will be cut along the way and some other questionable picks he's made could be wrong but I do believe Gase will cut most of Mac's picks except for the first round picks and starters.
People tend to overrate young players on their favorite team who have the smallest bit of production when forced into action. McGuire and Cannon are both pretty bad. Powell is a big upgrade over either of them (though I’d struggle to see him getting more touched than Montgomery at this stage of their careers)
Bingo. I would take a healthy Powell over either of those guys in a heartbeat. Neither are that good.
McGuire averaged 3.0 YPC last year. Anyone holding out hope of him developing into a contributor is fooling themself. And running back isn’t a position where players usually develop.
Pass protection is definitely a consideration, but I’m very intrigued by what Montgomery brings as a receiver. Gase could dial up some 2 RB sets with Bell and Ty who are both essentially extra wide receivers, and the defense will really have no idea how to match up. You’re pretty much guaranteed to get a good receiver matched up on a linebacker somewhere, and no LB can take those 2 down the field more than 7-10 yards.
Only two of these guys have proven anything in the league. #3 RB competition will be interesting to see play out.
Name recognition. People don't realize that every team has a McGuire, and if they don't it's because they dumped him.
