I agreed with every single thing until your last statement. Cam was the definition of a "demi - god" attitude that Winston has.

Yeah I don't see a lot of him, Carolina to me is a boring team and they're never on. But even times I've seen him in full games or on the Red Zone he doesn't really impress me as a passer. He's got a gun, but he doesn't look like a fluid accurate thrower. The running thing is so besides the point in my eyes.

    I could be wrong.

I admit, haven't seen a lot of him. Weird, that team is never on TV.

If the Jets can land a Mariota or Winston then you take him. Both those guys have the makings of big-time pro QB's. This will also depend on what the Jets new coaching staff looks like. Obviously we can only hope that they go after someone who has a record of developing QB's.

If these two guys are gone then I'd set my sights on Cooper or trade down and get two picks in the first to get Kevin White and a DB.

I don't get the fascination with Marcus Mariota.

At one time people were praising guys like Geno, Matt Barkley, Jimmy Claussen all who were great college QBs but couldn't stick it in the pros.

The point was that he didn't have the demi - god attitude off the field in the sense that he could steal and rape and get away with it because of who he was. He of course was cocky and had the attitude of being above everyone but didn't act recklessly in regards to the law because of it.

    Lolwhut?

Do you not remember all the shit he pulled back in college?

Or should I say colleges? The shit with his dad? And how much money he'd require to send Cam to one of their schools?

You know he didn't begin at Auburn, right?

You know he STOLE laptops at his first college Florida? Then on to JUCO? Then his dad's recruiting scandal? Miss St and Oklahoma?

You don't think he had anything to do with that?

He was the definition of an off the field demi-God.

I actually did not know about the laptop scandal however the money for going to schools is generally written off in my eyes. Players are exploited for millions of dollars anyways in college but that's besides the point. There have been hundreds upon hundreds of players taking money or wanting money prior to committing or after committing that it doesn't really flag up in my mind as a character problem rather just a way of the trade.

Regardless the laptop incident occurred 3 years before he was drafted without much incident after but we'll see. I still see Cam as a much more polished person than Winston was coming out of the draft which is why he was the consensus #1 overall pick at the top of one of the strongest drafts in the past 15 years. We'll see what experts say but to me it seems like he's regressed as a player and hasn't done much to grow up but then again I'm not sitting in a room with him interviewing him to see if he can handle the keys to a franchise.

It's not simply that I'm rating intangibles so fantastically highly, in fact it seems like Winston has some of those intangible traits especially when on the fiield. A little immaturity is not the end of the world, but Winston seems to time and time again make the wrong decision. Winston's transgressions are worse than any other high profile QB prospect than I can think of in recent memory as well.

I do think intangibles are more important for QB's than with any other position, because the QB is responsible for so much of what takes place on the field. Level headedness and leadership are highly important, in fact show me an elite QB who doesn't have those traits. Newton is very good at his best, but is less consistent than other QB's considered elite. I'd be happy to have Newton on the Jets, but his maturity level makes him look likeBuddha compared to Winston. I'm not one of those guys who is universally against a somewhat immature college player, but I'm definitely against Winston.

Which players are you taking about btw, that the Jets selected over other players with better talent but lower maturity?

Jets desparately need a top notch QB. They'll never win without one.
In history, only six Jets quarterbacks have finished in the top 10 in passing yardage.
    Joe Namath - 1966 (#1), 1967 (#1), 1968 (#3), 1969 (#6), 1972 (#1), 1974 (#2), 1975 (#10)
    Richard Todd - 1981 (#10), 1983 (#7)
    Ken O'Brien - 1985 (#3), 1986 (#5), 1987 (#10), 1991 (#7)
    Boomer Esiason - 1993 (#4)
    Vinny Testaverde - 1998 (#9), 2000 (#6)
    Chat Pennington - 2006 (#10)

    That's 17 seasons since 1966 (48 years or 35% of history in the Super Bowl era, 1976 to 2014 = 26%)

Wouldn't it be nice to find the first QB since Namath who can stay in the top 10 almost every year for a decade?

Sadly Namath was the only one in Jets history to be #1 in passing yards in a season.

His money grab scandal with his dad was legendary. He thought himself above everything. Unless you weren't around back then you don't realize it. He was MORE of an off the field demi-God than Winston.

True, he's more polished than Winston. I think it's that he's more "fake".

I don't care too much about leading the lead in passing yards or TDs - I want to lead the league in wins. A guy that can win us games and not fuck it up constantly would be great.

To think that his scandal is any different to that of the thousands of college athletes who have been paid to play seems a bit biased against Newton.

There are a lot of examples. Sticking to recent years - I think part of the reason they fell in love with Sanchez in 09 was his intangibles.. they way he interviewed, etc prior to the draft. They overrated a very green, inconsistent talent based on off the field stuff. Collision Low Crossers kinda touched on that...
obviously the Tebow acquisition, that goes without saying..
2006 a year they were looking for a QB I think they steered clear of Cutler for those reasons.
I also think off the field stuff, worrying about their current QB's intangibles/psyche has held them back from taking chances at other talented QBs (Russell Wilson, Foles, Flacco, Manziel, Bridgewater) if it was only about acquiring talent at the most important position on the field: a position they have struggled at - they might have pulled the trigger on one of those guys.

If you want to go further back in time obviously there's drafting Ken O'Brien over Marino..

I guess its a personal opinion of mine but I am tired of valuing/hearing about intangibles in a QB. I rate that far below how the guy plays. The next QB this team drafts I could give a shit about the inevitable fluff stories that will come out in the days after the draft about his intangibles. I simply want a great talent above all at the position. Something this organization hasn't had in awhile. I'm not sure if Winston is that guy but I think he's closer than Mariota is and I'm not going to downplay it because he's a dumb fuck.

Dude, it was a national scandal.

Every big time player in the nation had probably taken money some how or another.

Newton's was so over the top it literally became a national scandal.

You weren't around back then, were you? By the sounds of it, it doesn't seem like you are familiar at all with what went in back then.

The fact that you forgot about the laptops only confirms that.

The dude was the poster boy for being above the rules. If you don't realize or can't admit that, there is nothing further to discuss.

But you're right, he didn't allegedly rape someone so the rest of that doesn't matter.

If the Jets think that Mariota could be a franchise QB, he has to be the pick.

If they dont think he can be a franchise QB, than Andrus Peat should be the pick

Well to be fair it's not like they bypassed a hyper talented QB to take Sanchez, they just liked Sanchez. In 2006 Cutler had more questions than simply intangibles as well, and they were pretty well founded since Cutler actually has only been to the playoffs one time in his 8 years in the league. We also drafted D'Brickashaw Ferguson over Cutler, who was a sure thing at LT and if we weren't sold on Cutler it probably was the smart choice, considering we had Chad Pennington at the time who earned comeback player of the year and took us to the playoffs. Personally I think there were a lot more reasons to not take those other QB's you listed, not to mention it's not like intangibles were at the top of Geno Smith's resume as a prospect in 2013.

I also wouldn't really look back to the early 80's as an example, times were pretty different 3 decades ago.

Having a QB that can consistently be in the top 10 in passing in today's passing league would make that a whole lot easier.

I'd love to get Winston, i'd probably even take a chance on Mariota although I havent watched him play a lot.

Winston has talent that can not be denied. He has off the field issues but so have plenty of other guys who have come out of college.
